Young adult's own and parental social characteristics predict injury morbidity: a register-based follow-up of 135,000 men and women.

BACKGROUND: Sociodemographic differences in injury mortality are well-established, but population-level studies on social patterns of injury morbidity remain few in numbers, particularly among young adults. Yet injuries are the leading cause of mortality, morbidity and disability among young people. Studies among children have shown steep social gradients in severe injuries, but less is known on the social patterning of injuries in late adolescence and early adulthood, when young people are in the process of becoming independent adults. This study examines how young adults' current living arra

[Penetrating injury of two body cavities with a 20 cm long dagger-like sliver after falling into a glass door].

In Germany the numbers of penetrating thoracic injuries are rare compared to Anglo-American countries; however, the number of cases has increased in recent years due to an increase in violent incidents. This article reports the case of a patient who suffered such a penetrating thoracic injury after a domestic accident. Operative treatment was performed according to the well-established standard treatment algorithms. Contrary to the initial assessment of the emergency doctor, substantially more severe injuries were found.

Trauma related to falls from trees treated in a specialized trauma centre in Burkina-Faso-one hundred and six cases treated in one year.

PURPOSE: Falls from trees related traumas are rarely reported in literature. They are public health problems in developing countries where their frequency is still important. The aim of the study is to describe falls from trees related trauma patterns and to present preventative measures. METHODS: An annual ongoing prospective study was held in our trauma emergency department (ED) about all the patients who sustained an injury after a recent fall from tree. A questionnaire related to the patient and to the trauma was established. The data were encoded and analysed by a statistical software.

Salvage of severe ischemic lower limb having peak creatine phosphokinase level exceeding 200,000 IU/L treated by continuous hemodiafiltration.

We performed revascularization by an anti-anatomical bypass in a 40-year-old man with extended ischemia of both legs beyond 12 hr after onset because of traumatic aortic dissection. This patient developed myonephropathic metabolic syndrome, including renal and circulatory failure accompanied by a creatine phosphokinase level above 200,000 IU/L. Nevertheless, his bilateral affected limbs were salvaged by intensive care based on aggressive hemocatharsis with continuous hemodiafiltration with treatment for poor hemodynamics and respiratory distress.

Fatal falls from bicycles: a case report.

Though rare occurrences, fatal falls from bicycles are generally linked to the absence of a protective helmet and/or a collision with another vehicle. The case presented here is exceptional due to its circumstances and the consequences of the accident: a fall with no obstacle at a low speed that brought about multiple traumas and the death of a cyclist wearing a protective helmet. Comparing this against a review of cyclist accidentology literature, this case is unique. The increased use of autopsy in terms of forensic accidentology is to be encouraged so as not to misunderstand the possibility

Case report: unusual complication during outpatient continuous regional popliteal analgesia.

PURPOSE: Continuous regional anesthesia applied as pain therapy at home is clinically established standard practice after upper and lower limb surgery. Persistent motor block at discharge or after continuous infusion of local anesthetics, however, might lead to complications related to the insensate extremity. We report a rare case of a foot fracture due to stumbling after continuous sciatic nerve block at home and discuss the related clinical implications. CLINICAL FEATURES: After uncomplicated ambulatory foot surgery under regional anesthesia, a patient was discharged with a continuous scia

Nonsurgically treated terrible triad injuries of the elbow: report of four cases.

This case series describes 4 patients with terrible triad injury of the elbow (dislocation with fractures of the radial head and coronoid) who were treated nonsurgically. Following nonsurgical treatment in this select group of patients, the elbow was well aligned, and the patients regained good elbow function. Three of these 4 patients had good results. One patient had surgery for residual stiffness, ulnar neuropathy, and a radial head deformity. We conclude that, in selected terrible triad cases, when the elbow is well aligned and the radial head and coronoid fractures are relatively small an

Immediate internal fixation of open ankle fractures.

BACKGROUND: Open ankle fractures are one of the most frequently treated open fractures. Immediate internal fixation in open ankle fractures is widely reported to produce good results, with a very low infection rate. However, there are few reports in the literature discussing distinct features of open ankle fractures. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the injury features of such fractures and the operative technique; pilon fractures were excluded. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six patients with open ankle fractures underwent surgery between August 2001 and March 2008. Ninety-two patie

Traumatic delayed epidural hematoma.

OBJECT: Traumatic delayed epidural hematoma (DEH) can be defined as a hematoma that is insignificant or not present on the initial computerized tomography (CT) scan made after trauma but subsequent CT scan shows sizeable epidural bleeding. During a 3-year period we have treated a total of 96 epidural hematomas, eight (8.3 %) of which had a delayed onset. CASE REPORT: We present here an analysis of the eight patients with traumatic DEH which had a significant mass effect in all patients and required surgical evacuation. In three patients with mild head injury (GCS > 12) neurological deteriorat

Non-collision injuries in public buses: a national survey of a neglected problem.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective, nationally representative, multi-centre study was undertaken to assess non-collision injuries sustained by public bus passengers in Israel. METHODS: The emergency departments (EDs) of six medical centres, which participated in this eight month study, were chosen to represent both urban and rural catchment areas. All patients diagnosed with injuries sustained on a public bus not involved in a road traffic accident were promptly evaluated for mechanism and nature of injury and demographic parameters. RESULTS: The study cohort consisted of 120 patients (86 were fem

A retrospective case-control study of horse falls in the sport of horse trials and three-day eventing.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Serious injuries to horses and riders in horse trials (HT) and three-day events (3DE) are usually associated with falls of horses, which invariably involve falls of the riders. Many potential causes for these falls have been discussed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the risk factors for horse falls on the cross-country phase of horse trials and three-day events. METHODS: Using retrospective data, significant risk factors identified with unvariable analysis (P value <0.2) were entered into a multivariable logistic regression mod

[Analysis of the mechanisms of minor occupational injuries in the construction industry in Spain].

OBJECTIVES: The construction industry produces the highest number of occupational injuries in Spain (25.6%). Of these, 98.5% were minor injuries with 5 million workdays lost in 2000. This occurred even after the recent introduction of numerous health and occupational safety regulations. The objective of the present study was to identify the specific mechanisms of minor occupational injuries in the construction sector. METHODS: In 2000, there were 235,853 minor occupational injuries in the construction industry. From these, injuries in general construction and civil engineering were selected (
