[The comparison of the expansion of polyps according to the Ki-67 and computed tomography scores].

OBJECTIVES: The disease extention in nasal polyps was compared by using the mitotic activity rates and the computed tomography scores. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 19 nasal polyposis patients (8 males, 11 females; mean age 40.0+/-13.7 years; range 20 to 63 years). The preoperative computed tomography records of the patients were evaluated according to the Lund-Mackay grading system. The polyp tissues of the same patients were stained with the Ki-67 antigen for immunohistochemical evaluation. The correlation between the radiologic results and the Ki-67 values was compared

Case report: portal and systemic venous gas in a patient with perforated duodenal ulcer: CT findings.

Gas within the portal circulation has been known to be associated with a number of conditions most commonly mesenteric ischemia and necrosis. Systemic venous gas is described with few conditions and is mostly iatrogenic in nature. We describe a case of combined portal and systemic venous gas detected by computed tomography in a patient with perforated duodenal ulcer.

Disentangling memory and nonlinearity in time-multiplexed optical reservoir computing.

We analyze and disentangle the individual and combined roles of nonlinearity, transient dynamics, and delayed feedback and investigate how these mechanisms contribute to different task requirements in photonic reservoir computing. This is achieved using a passive linear photonic reservoir in which a photodiode at the optical-to-electrical interface provides the sole source of nonlinearity. We demonstrate how the requirements of different tasks can be quantified and compared to the dynamics provided by the reservoir by explicitly calculating and comparing the contributing monomials. Our finding

Quantification of various types of uncertainty in biological computational models using fuzzy mass functions.

We develop a unified uncertainty propagation framework for computational models involving stochastic variability together with two distinct forms of epistemic uncertainty: vagueness and incomplete knowledge. In this framework, stochastic uncertainty is represented by random variables, while the epistemic components are modeled by random fuzzy sets with fuzzy mass functions generalized from Dempster-Shafer theory and fuzzy set theory. Using generalized polynomial chaos expansions and extension principles, the propagated uncertainty in output expectation is then quantified efficiently by a fuzzy

Multiview three-dimensional imaging using a Risley-prism-based spatially adaptive virtual camera field.

We present a three-dimensional (3D) imaging system that incorporates a stationary camera and Risley prisms. By planning prism rotation to generate a spatially adaptive virtual camera field, the system allows multiple virtual cameras in the field to capture any object from different perspectives for 3D reconstruction. An automatic virtual camera calibration method based on perspective projection and geometric optics is developed to enable virtual camera field construction and characterization. Moreover, a 3D computational reconstruction framework is proposed for multiview information fusion usi

Visualization and quantification of air embolism structure by processing postmortem MSCT data.

Venous air embolism (VAE) is an often occurring forensic finding in cases of injury to the head and neck. Whenever found, it has to be appraised in its relation to the cause of death. While visualization and quantification is difficult at traditional autopsy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) offer a new potential in the diagnosis of VAE. This paper reports the findings of VAE in four cases of massive head injury examined postmortem by Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) prior to autopsy. MSCT data of the thorax were processed using 3D air structure reconstruction

Clinical application of computed radiography in orthopedic surgery.

Since 1988, Fuji Computed Radiography (FCR) system (Fuji Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) has been used at Osaka Prefectural Hospital (Osaka, Japan) for all kinds of images. In this paper, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computed radiography (CR) images from the standpoint of an orthopedic surgeon. Contours, which can not be seen on conventional radiographs, are clearly visualized on the CR image. Adequate information for diagnosis can be obtained with a great reduction in x-ray exposure during the screening of scoliosis or congenital dislocation of hip joint. However, because the

Enhancing the role of veterinary vaccines reducing zoonotic diseases of humans: linking systems biology with vaccine development.

The aim of research on infectious diseases is their prevention, and brucellosis and salmonellosis as such are classic examples of worldwide zoonoses for application of a systems biology approach for enhanced rational vaccine development. When used optimally, vaccines prevent disease manifestations, reduce transmission of disease, decrease the need for pharmaceutical intervention, and improve the health and welfare of animals, as well as indirectly protecting against zoonotic diseases of people. Advances in the last decade or so using comprehensive systems biology approaches linking genomics, p

Attenuation of London Dispersion in Dichloromethane Solutions.

London dispersion constitutes one of the fundamental interaction forces between atoms and between molecules. While modern computational methods have been developed to describe the strength of dispersive interactions in the gas phase properly, the importance of inter- and intramolecular dispersion in solution remains yet to be fully understood because experimental data are still sparse in that regard. We herein report a detailed experimental and computational study of the contribution of London dispersion to the bond dissociation of proton-bound dimers, both in the gas phase and in dichlorometh

Computational model of visual hallucination in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) frequently experience visual hallucination (VH), which has been aptly described as people seeing things that are not there. The distinctive character of VH in DLB necessitates a new theory of visual cognition. We have conducted a series of studies with the aim to understand the mechanism of this dysfunction of the cognitive system. We have proposed that if we view the disease from the internal mechanism of neurocognitive processes, and if also take into consideration recent experimental data on conduction abnormality, at least some of the symptoms

Brain functional involvement by perfusion SPECT in systemic sclerosis and Behçet's disease.

Involvement of the central nervous system is frequent in systemic immune-mediated diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Behçet's disease (BD), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Structural brain examinations, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, may be useful in diagnosing and following-up these cerebral syndromes in some cases, but they are more often inconclusive. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with perfusion tracers is a powerful method that can disclose brain involvement in many clinical situations, even in patients with subtle neurological s

Determining Anxiety in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder through Behavioural Clustering and Variations in Repetition Intensity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, the application of computer vision techniques to the analysis of behavioural patterns has seen a considerable increase in research interest. One such interesting and recent application is the visual behavioural analysis of mental disorders. Despite the very recent surge in interest in this area, relatively little has been done thus far to assist individuals living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The work proposed herein represents a proof of concept system designed to demonstrate the efficacy of such an approach, from the computational persp

A preliminary exploration of quantitative models for evaluating binocular visual perception impairments among patients diagnosed with stroke.

The objective of this study is to formulate and implement graded biological models pertaining to binocular visual perception function with the use of computer algorithms. We aim to quantitatively assess the location, severity, and degree of impairment in binocular visual perception among patients who have suffered stroke, thereby providing valuable insights into the repercussions of cerebral tissue damage on the visual system. To overcome the shortcomings of previous instruments used to assess binocular function in terms of stereoscopic effects and the challenges posed by physiological and psy

Value of bone SPECT-CT to predict chronic pain relief after percutaneous vertebroplasty in vertebral fractures.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Longer life span has resulted in increased risk of vertebral osteoporotic fractures. Among minimally invasive procedures, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) has shown excellent results in the treatment of chronic vertebral pain. The role of preintervention bone single photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) has not been clearly established for the management of these patients. PURPOSE: To determine the value of bone SPECT-CT in patient selection, treatment planning, and prediction of response to PV. A comparison with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI

The LISS--a public database of common imaging signs of lung diseases for computer-aided detection and diagnosis research and medical education.

Lung computed tomography (CT) imaging signs play important roles in the diagnosis of lung diseases. In this paper, we review the significance of CT imaging signs in disease diagnosis and determine the inclusion criterion of CT scans and CT imaging signs of our database. We develop the software of abnormal regions annotation and design the storage scheme of CT images and annotation data. Then, we present a publicly available database of lung CT imaging signs, called LISS for short, which contains 271 CT scans and 677 abnormal regions in them. The 677 abnormal regions are divided into nine categ

Brain-computer interfaces in neurological rehabilitation.

Recent advances in analysis of brain signals, training patients to control these signals, and improved computing capabilities have enabled people with severe motor disabilities to use their brain signals for communication and control of objects in their environment, thereby bypassing their impaired neuromuscular system. Non-invasive, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies can be used to control a computer cursor or a limb orthosis, for word processing and accessing the internet, and for other functions such as environmental control or entertainment. Defining brain-machine interface applications by matching interface performance with device requirements.

Interaction with machines is mediated by human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) are a particular class of HMIs and have so far been studied as a communication means for people who have little or no voluntary control of muscle activity. In this context, low-performing interfaces can be considered as prosthetic applications. On the other hand, for able-bodied users, a BMI would only be practical if conceived as an augmenting interface. In this paper, a method is introduced for pointing out effective combinations of interfaces and devices for creating real-world applicat
