Neurofibromatosis (NF) is an autosomal genetic disorder with three types, including NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. It is characterized by bulging and deforming masses arising from multiple nerves involving skin folds and connective tissues. Prompt diagnosis and provision of care for NF1 patients by clinicians aware of the diverse clinical features of this disorder are needed for optimum patient care and management. A 65-year-old African American female with a past medical history significant for multiple neurofibromas covering more than 95% of her total body surface area (TBSA), presented to a…

INTRODUCTION: Large Unilocular radiolucent lesions of the jaws often present a dilemma to both, the Oral Pathologist and the Maxillofacial s … astomas, two as Plexiform Ameloblastomas; four as Acanthomatous Ameloblastomas; one as Ameloblastic Fibroma and two as Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumours. The predictive and prognostic indication of the Immunohistochemical markers correlated well with the post treatment findings.

BACKGROUND: Fibro-osseous lesions of the paranasal sinuses are an uncommon heterogeneous group of lesions with variable clinical presentation. It is unclear whether these lesions directly cause symptoms or secondarily obstruct the sinuses with resultant rhinosinusitis. We have used an expectant management approach in selected patients that includes observation with serial scans or endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) to improve the outflow tract of the affected sinus without resection of the lesion. The purpose of this work is to review our experience with management of paranasal sinus fibro-osseous

BACKGROUND: Growth factors recognized by the epidermal growth factor receptor are important in tumor production in some organs. The family of epidermal growth factor-like growth factors includes a group of poxviral growth factors: Shope growth factor (SGF), myxoma growth factor MGF), and vaccinia growth factor. These viral growth factors are glycoproteins, whereas all other members of the epidermal growth factor family are proteins.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: To understand the potential significance of poxviral growth factors, we made transgenic mice using three different constructs: SGF and MGF cl

In conclusion, the attempt has been made to demonstrate that three major forms of new bone formation exist: reactive, neoplastic, and the newborn or relative skeletal sclerosis in congenital (developmental) disorders. A classification of skeletal disorders has been presented and four major groups have been selected from the nine categories in this classification. These are: congenital-developmental, metabolic and endocrine, benign neoplasms and malignant neoplasms. In all four categories a large group of entities which may present with new bone (sclerosis) are listed and are discussed in some,

A variety of cyst and cystlike lesions may present in the osseous structures of the foot. Such lesions are infrequent in their occurrence, and often cannot be diagnosed on the basis of radiographic appearance. In addition to the morphologic data that can be derived from evaluation of standard radiographs, other diagnostic radiographic studies such as tomography, CT scanning, radionuclide bone imaging, angiography, or other studies may be required to ascertain the nature and extent of cystlike lesions of the foot. This is dependent on histopathologic information derived from biopsy. A variety o

This article highlights selected cutaneous mesenchymal tumors, emphasizing histopathology, immunophenotype, and molecular alterations. It outlines diagnostic pitfalls, distinguishing features, and clinical behavior of indolent and malignant lesions. Awareness ensures accurate and appropriate treatment, and prevents overtreating benign mimics.

OBJECTIVE: Chilean population is ageing, which means an increase in the prevalence of multiple pathologies, including those located in the oral cavity.
AIM: To measure the prevalence and distribution of oral mucosal lesions and to identify associated risk factors in elderly patients in the city of Valparaiso.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study includes 126 patients over 60 years. The sample was calculated with a sampling error of 3.7% from a population size of 6000 file cards. Frequency and contingency tables were made together with odds ratios, with a confidence interval of 95%. Finally, we b

Elastofibromas have been described as ill-defined tumors, composed of fibroblastic stromal cells and a dense collagenous stroma. A total of 5 elastofibromas from 4 Japanese patients were examined by ultrastructural and immunohistochemical methods. The proliferating fibroblastic stromal cells in the lesion showed Cx43-type gap junctions, isolated cilia, prominent nuclear fibrous laminae, and primitive cellular junctions with incomplete laminae. The active proliferating fibroblastic cells showed positive staining for vimentin, CD34, factor XIIIa, prominin 2 (CD133), and MEF 2. Conspicuous cell-t…

BACKGROUND: Rhinosurgery in children and adolescents meets special requirements: Limited cooperation and reduced limits for the organ dose for ionizing radiological examinations aggravate diagnostics. On the other side, bone sutures and bone growth areas have to be respected intraoperatively, and regions of bones not yet calcified have to be distinguished from possible tumor infiltration. Computer assisted surgery (CAS) can help to identify these areas safely.
METHOD: 5 patients, from the first to the 20 (th) year of life, suffering from tumors, malformation syndromes or therapy resistant nas

This review of inferior vena caval obstruction and narrowing centers the discussion on the major groups of diseases which produce primary or secondary obstruction and those which cause distortion or narrowing of the inferior vena cava. Although the majority of these diseases which are involved affect both adults and children, a separate discussion of pediatric causes of inferior vena caval involvement is included. The paper has been organized for discussion by the anatomic areas of potential involvement by disease: the lower, middle, and upper thirds of the vena cava. Other subjects which are

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this clinical report was to present and discuss the clinical procedure and the treatment considerations of prosthetic rehabilitation for hemimaxillectomy patients.
DESIGN: A 61-year-old man was successfully treated with all the remaining teeth reconstruction including replacing the implant-supported anterior fixed prosthesis and maxillary obturator.
CONCLUSIONS: An appropriate obturator design, remaining teeth reconstruction, and establishment of a proper vertical dimension of occlusion are important for acceptable facial appearance and patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis predisposing to the development of multiple fibrofolliculomas (FFs), pulmonary cysts, spontaneous pneumothorax and renal neoplasms. The association of BHDS with various nonrenal neoplasms has been reported but remains controversial.
OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical features and germline mutations in 22 patients from 10 unrelated families with BHDS investigated during a 5-year prospective study by the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Montpellier, France. Also, to define more clearly the
