A wolf at the door: the ecology, epidemiology, and emergence of community- and urban-level Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the Americas.

RMSF, a tickborne infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, produces severe and fatal disease in humans and dogs. Since the beginning of the 21st century, cases have risen dramatically, most notably in Mexico and Brazil, where outbreaks occur in urban centers including cities with populations of > 1,000,000 persons. Reported case fatality rates can exceed 50%. Factors consistent with high case fatality include lack of awareness of disease ecology, limited capacity for diagnosis, and delay in appropriate antimicrobial treatment. The emergence of urban hyperendemic foci has been leveraged by 2

Unlocking the potential of novel RTS, S/AS01, and R21/Matrix-M™ malaria vaccines in African nations.

INTRODUCTION: Mass malaria vaccination, rather than vaccinating only children below age 5, has been proven to have the potential to reduce morbidity and mortality among those vaccinated, both young and old. Addressing vaccine scepticism and misinformation is crucial in African nations to build public trust in malaria prevention. Therefore, including a wider range of demographics in vaccine trials is necessary for equitable representation and achieving herd immunity against malaria. AIM: This present article aims to identify some of the obstacles that impede malaria vaccination usage and accep

Understanding and Addressing Widening Racial Inequalities in Drug Overdose.

The fourth wave of the United States overdose crisis-driven by the polysubstance use of fentanyl with stimulants and other synthetic substan … continued to rise. Moving forward, Fundamental Cause Theory shows us a relevant universal truth of implementation science: in socially unequal societies, new technologies typically end up favoring more privileged groups first, thereby widening inequalities unless underlying social inequalities are addressed. Therefore, interventions designed to reduce addiction and ove …

Exposing telomere length's impact on malnutrition risk among older adults residing in the community: Insights from cross-sectional data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Successful aging is associated with an increase in life expectancy. For a better understanding of the aging process, recognize the relationship between telomere length and nutritional status is a novel approach in geriatric science. Telomers shortening coincides with a decrease in life expectancy, and an increased risk of malnutrition-related diseases. GOALS: The goal of this study was to investigate whether a shorter telomere length is associated with a greater likelihood of malnutrition in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sa

The Effect of Stigma on Family Planning and HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Decisions of Young Women Accessing Post-Abortion Care in Kenya.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Eastern and Southern Africa face parallel epidemics of unintended pregnancy and HIV. Their sexual health decisions are often dominated by intersecting stigmas. In an implementation science project integrating delivery of daily, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention into 14 post-abortion care (PAC) clinics in Kenya, we enrolled a subset of PrEP initiating AGYW (aged 15 to 30 years) into a research cohort. Utilizing log binomial models, we estimated the effect of PrEP stigma on PrEP continuation (measured via self-report and urine assa…

Synthesis of evidence for managing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in low middle-income countries: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) remain one of the leading causes of maternal mortality globally, especially in Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To reduce the burden of associated morbidity and mortality, standardized prompt recognition, evaluation, and treatment have been proposed. Health disparities, barriers to access to healthcare, and shortage of resources influence these conditions. We aimed to synthesize the literature evidence for the management of HDPs in LMICs. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in five databases (PubMed, Web of Sci

Relationship between SIBO and other bowel diseases and a common eating pattern for them. Part III.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Conditions resulting from diseases of the brain-gut axis and gum-gut axis show many mutual, often bi-directional interrelationships. The accompanying quantitative and/or qualitative disorders of intestinal microflora may be effectively regulated by implementation of a properly adjusted diet therapy. The aim of the study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and non-specific inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), as well as indications for the mode of nutrition. REVIEW

Methodology and application of three-dimensional technology for brace design and production for treatment in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Conservative treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using bracing has proven to be effective at reducing curve progression. However, variation in brace design and lack of brace specificity hamper clinical treatment outcomes as well as the predictability and comparison hereof. To overcome this, recent technological developments aim to generate transparent and objective criteria for brace manufacturing by applying computer-aided design software and additive manufacturing to produce braces for scoliosis treatment. Yet, the extent of its applicability and clinical implem

Prescribing Pattern of Dermatological Compounding in Ethiopia: The Case of ALERT Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases are among the major contributors of disease burden in Ethiopia affecting individuals of all age. Extemporaneous compounding of topical medications serves as a necessary option to treat skin diseases when manufactured medications could not meet specific patient needs. Different classes of drugs are commonly used for the treatment of dermatologic diseases. Failure to periodically assess the prescribing pattern and patient needs may lead to inappropriate planning and implementation that ultimately compromise the service. Periodic prescription analysis for compounded medi
