Outbreak of beriberi in the state of Maranhão, Brazil: revisiting the mycotoxin aetiologic hypothesis.

Beriberi is caused by thiamine deficiency. Early 20th century epidemics in Japan were attributed to rice contaminated by citreoviridin mycotoxin. Our investigation of an outbreak of beriberi in Brazil showed an association of beriberi with the consumption of poor quality subsistence farming rice, although, unlike other investigators of this outbreak, we did not identify citreoviridin producing fungi in the implicated rice.

[Dietary factors and oral cancer: a case-control study in Greater Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil].

Dietary factors associated with oral cancer were investigated in a case-control hospital-based study in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, from 1998 to 2002. A total of 835 subjects, 366 with histologically confirmed incident cases of oral-cavity or pharyngeal cancer and 469 controls participated in the study. Dietary data were collected with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were obtained from unconditional logistic regression, adjusted for potential confounders. Inverse associations with risk of oral cancer were found for the highest inta

Influence of light in acute toxicity bioassays of imidacloprid and zinc pyrithione to zooplankton crustaceans.

The acute toxicity of imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, and zinc pyrithione (Zpt), a biocide used in anti-dandruff shampoos and protective antifouling paints, to three species of ostracods and two waterfleas, including Daphnia magna, was determined and compared under light and dark conditions. Under normal laboratory conditions, UV light had no significant influence on the outcome of toxicity bioassays, although in the case of imidacloprid both EC(50) and LC(50) calculated values were twice as high under the light as in the dark. No influence of UV light was observed on bioassays cond

High Adherence to a Food Guide May Be Associated with Lower Serum C-Peptide Concentrations.

A balanced diet has been associated with a lower risk of total and cardiovascular mortality. One intermediate function linking a balanced diet and lower mortality may be optimal insulin secretion. We examined the association between adherence to the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top (JFGST) and serum C-peptide concentration, an indicator of basal insulin secretion, in a cross-sectional study in a Japanese population, in whom rice (refined grains) is the staple food. A blood sample was collected in November 2012 and a 12-d weighed food record was collected over the subsequent year. A total of 21

Black Rice Anthocyanin-Hyaluronic Acid Complex Alleviates Hyperuricemia-Associated Renal Injury Through Synergistic Inhibition of the TLR4/NF-κB Pathway and Modulation of Uric Acid Transport.

Hyperuricemia-associated renal injury is closely linked to oxidative stress and inflammation, highlighting the need for safe dietary intervention. This study evaluated the protective effects of a black rice anthocyanin (ATC)-hyaluronic acid complex (HAA) against uric acid (UA)-induced injury. In UA-induced human renal proximal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells, black rice ATCs, HA, and HAA improved cell viability and antioxidant defenses, as shown by increased glutathione (GSH) levels and catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. They also reduced malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive

Monascus pilosus SWM-008-Fermented Red Mold Rice and Its Monascinol Ameliorate Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease via Activation of the AMPK-ATGL Pathway and Enrichment of Butyrate-Producing Bacteria.

SWM-008 red mold rice, fermented by Monascus pilosus SWM-008, upregulates Akkermansia and supports gut barrier function and metabolic health, suggesting prebiotic-like and postbiotic-like effects. Its dual role suggests value for metabolic disorder management. Few interventions simultaneously enhance both Akkermansia and butyrate-producing bacteria, which underscores the unique potential of SWM-008. SWM-008 red mold rice, and its functional compound were administered to a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) model in C57BL/6 mice for 18 weeks. Magnetic dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer synthesized from plant's phenolic acid-derived deep eutectic solvents for the enrichment of organophosphorus pesticides from rice samples before LC-MS/MS analysis.

A novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MDMIP) is synthesized using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) derived from choline chloride, plant phenolic acids, and formic acid as green binary functional monomers. Choline chloride-2-naphthol and choline chloride-thymol-ethanol DESs are used as a dual-dummy template. The MDMIP is applied in magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to determine seven organophosphorus pesticides in rice samples. The adsorption behavior follows the pseudo-second-order (R2 > 0.999) and Freundlich (R2 > 0.987) models,

Two Genes Encoding a Bacterial-Type ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter are Implicated in Aluminum Tolerance in Buckwheat.

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) shows high tolerance to aluminum (Al) toxicity, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its high Al tolerance are poorly understood. Here, we functionally characterized two genes (FeSTAR1 and FeSTAR2), which encode a nucleotide-binding domain and a membrane domain, respectively, of a bacterial-type ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter. The expression of FeSTAR1 and FeSTAR2 was induced by Al in both roots and leaves with higher expression in the roots. Spatial and tissue-specific expression analysis showed that the Al-induced expression of these two gen

Quest to identify geochemical risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in an endemic region of Sri Lanka-a multimedia laboratory analysis of biological, food, and environmental samples.

The emergence of a new form of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka's North Central Province (NCP) has become a catastrophic health crisis. CKDu is characterized as slowly progressing, irreversible, and asymptomatic until late stages and, importantly, not attributed to diabetes, hypertension, or other known risk factors. It is postulated that the etiology of CKDu is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, nutritional and dehydration status, exposure to one or more environmental nephrotoxins, and lifestyle factors. The objective of this limited geochemical la

Addition of Rice Bran Arabinoxylan to Curcumin Therapy May Be of Benefit to Patients With Early-Stage B-Cell Lymphoid Malignancies (Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance, Smoldering Multiple Myeloma, or Stage 0/1 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia): A Preliminary Clinical Study.

Hypothesis Prior studies on patients with early B-cell lymphoid malignancies suggest that early intervention with curcumin may lead to delay in progressive disease and prolonged survival. These patients are characterized by increased susceptibility to infections. Rice bran arabinoxylan (Ribraxx) has been shown to have immunostimulatory, anti-inflammatory, and proapoptotic effects. We postulated that addition of Ribraxx to curcumin therapy may be of benefit. Study design Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)/smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) or stage 0/1 chronic lymphocytic

Intracellular catalase/peroxidase from the phytopathogenic rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea: expression analysis and biochemical characterization of the recombinant protein.

Phytopathogenic fungi such as the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea are unique in having two catalase/peroxidase (KatG) paralogues located either intracellularly (KatG1) or extracellularly (KatG2). The coding genes have recently been shown to derive from a lateral gene transfer from a (proteo)bacterial genome followed by gene duplication and diversification. Here we demonstrate that KatG1 is expressed constitutively in M. grisea. It is the first eukaryotic catalase/peroxidase to be expressed heterologously in Escherichia coli in high amounts, with high purity and with almost 100% haem occup

Contribution of salicylic acid glucosyltransferase, OsSGT1, to chemically induced disease resistance in rice plants.

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR), a natural disease response in plants, can be induced chemically. Salicylic acid (SA) acts as a key endogenous signaling molecule that mediates SAR in dicotyledonous plants. However, the role of SA in monocotyledonous plants has yet to be elucidated. In this study, the mode of action of the agrochemical protectant chemical probenazole was assessed by microarray-based determination of gene expression. Cloning and characterization of the most highly activated probenazole-responsive gene revealed that it encodes UDP-glucose:SA glucosyltransferase (OsSGT1), which

Effect of diet composition on postweaning colibacillosis in piglets.

The weaning of piglets is often associated with digestive disorders, particularly diarrhea--postweaning colibacillosis (PWC)--which is caused by infection with enterotoxigenic strains of Escherichia coli. It has been shown previously that a diet for newly weaned pigs based on cooked white rice and animal protein decreases the occurrence of PWC, whereas the addition of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) to this diet enhances PWC. The aims of the current work were to 1) determine whether substitution of animal protein with plant proteins in the cooked-white-rice diet influenced its protective effects

Mechanism of Red Yeast Rice in the Improvement of Atherosclerosis in Apolipoprotein E-deficient Mice Explored Through Metabolomics Combined with Serum Pharmacochemistry and Network Pharmacology.

Red Yeast Rice (RYR), the fermentation of cooked rice kernels with Monascus purpureus, has been traditionally and increasingly applied to alleviate atherosclerosis (AS). Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects in AS treatment remain elusive. Metabolomics combined with serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology was utilized to explore the potential molecular mechanisms by which RYR improves AS. RYR showed a significant inhibitory effect on metabolic dysfunction in mice. Specifically, through metabolomics analysis, 45 metabolic biomarkers were identified, whi
