Modeling activation and effective connectivity of VWFA in same script bilinguals.

Previous neuroimaging research revealed a small area in the inferior occipito-temporal cortex (VWFA), which seems to be involved in recognition of written words. The specialized response of the VWFA to words could result from repeated exposure to print in the course of functional fine-tuning of the brain. Research with bilingual speakers holds promise in helping to reveal response properties of the VWFA by assessing its sensitivity to language proficiency, word-form similarity, and meaning overlap across two languages. Using fMRI, we compared VWFA activity for cognate and homograph prime-targe

Enhancing indoor activity recognition for disabled persons using multi head self attention recurrent neural network with improved pelican algorithm.

Indoor activity monitoring methods ensure the well-being and security of elderly and visually impaired people living in their houses. These systems utilize numerous technologies and sensors to monitor day-to-day activities, including medication adherence, movement, and sleep patterns, providing a comprehensive view of the user's overall health and daily life. The accuracy and adaptability of deep learning (DL) models make human activity recognition (HAR) a valuable tool for enhancing effectiveness, security, and personalized experiences in indoor environments. HAR, utilizing DL techniques, inn

Face-name associative memory in temporal lobe epilepsy: Region-specific insights in right-hemisphere onset.

Mapping memory function in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is important for understanding surgical risk, yet practical noninvasive tools remain limited. We tested whether a face-name associative memory fMRI task could detect subregional dysfunction within the amygdala-hippocampal complex (AHC) in TLE. Forty-nine individuals with unilateral TLE (29 left-, 20 right-onset; 51% MTS-negative) and 25 controls from three centers were scanned during a face-name encoding task and completed delayed recognition and neuropsychological tests of memory. The hippocampal head, body, tail, and amygdala were anato

Neural processing of the own child's facial emotions in mothers with a history of early life maltreatment.

Early life maltreatment (ELM) has long-lasting effects on social interaction. When interacting with their own child, women with ELM often report difficulties in parenting and show reduced maternal sensitivity. Sensitive maternal behavior requires the recognition of the child's emotional state depicted in its facial emotions. Based on previous studies, it can be expected that ELM affects the neural processing of facial emotions by altering activation patterns in parts of the brain's empathy and mentalizing networks. However, so far studies have focused on the processing of standardized, adult f

Action mechanisms of transcranial direct current stimulation in Alzheimer's disease and memory loss.

The pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is often limited and accompanied by drug side effects. Thus alternative therapeutic strategies such as non-invasive brain stimulation are needed. Few studies have demonstrated that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a method of neuromodulation with consecutive robust excitability changes within the stimulated cortex area, is beneficial in AD. There is also evidence that tDCS enhances memory function in cognitive rehabilitation in depressive patients, Parkinson's disease, and stroke. tDCS improves working and visual recognit

Avoiding the pitfalls of EEG interpretation in childhood epilepsy.

The accurate interpretation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) of infants and children being evaluated for suspected epilepsy is based on the appreciation of normal and expected age-dependent characteristics, an awareness of the significance of both epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and the correlation of epileptiform abnormalities with clinical findings. Avoiding the pitfalls of pediatric EEG interpretation include the recognition of such normal EEG features in wakefulness as posterior slow waves of youth, mu rhythm, and lambda waves. In addition, the understanding of age-dependent c

Eye Movement Abnormalities During the Gaze Perception Task in Individuals With Clinical High Risk for Psychosis: A Discriminant Analysis With Hidden Markov Models.

OBJECTIVES: Social cognitive impairments were well-documented in schizophrenia and individuals with clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). While eye movement abnormalities during gaze perception in schizophrenia have been suggested, such understanding in individuals with CHR is limited. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: This study recruited 36 CHR individuals and 50 healthy controls (HC) to perform a gaze perception task with eye-tracking techniques analyzed with hidden Markov models for predictability and pattern recognition. The effects of hyperammonemia in learning and brain metabolic activity.

Ammonia is thought to be central in the development of hepatic encephalopathy. However, the specific relation of ammonia with brain energy depletions and learning has not been studied. Our work attempts to reproduce an increase in rat cerebral ammonia level, study the hyperamonemic animals' performance of two learning tasks, an allocentric (ALLO) and a cue guided (CG) task, and elucidate the contribution of hyperammonemia to the differential energy requirements of the brain limbic system regions involved in these tasks. To assess these goals, four groups of animals were used: a control (CHA) C

Increased anterior cingulate and temporal lobe activity during visuospatial working memory in children and adolescents with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Similar to adults, children and adolescents with schizophrenia present with significant working memory (WkM) deficits. However, unlike adults, findings of abnormal activity in the prefrontal cortex in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) are not consistently reported. Since WkM continues to develop through adolescence and into early adulthood, patterns of activation in adolescents may be different than those found in adults. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional neurobiology of WkM in patients with EOS. METHOD: Participants included 22 patients with EOS (mean age 15±2.8

The involvement of occipital and inferior frontal cortex in the phonological learning of Chinese characters.

Neural changes related to the learning of the pronunciation of Chinese characters in English speakers were examined using fMRI. We examined the item-specific learning effects for trained characters and the generalization of phonetic knowledge to novel transfer characters that shared a phonetic radical (part of a character that gives a clue to the whole character's pronunciation) with trained characters. Behavioral results showed that shared phonetic information improved performance for transfer characters. Neuroimaging results for trained characters over learning found increased activation in

Alterations of decision making and underlying neural correlates after resection of a mediofrontal cortical dysplasia: A single case study.

We investigated the impact of a congenital prefrontal lesion and its resection on decision making under risk and under ambiguity in a patient with right mediofrontal cortical dysplasia. Both kinds of decision making are normally associated with the medial prefrontal cortex. We additionally studied pre- and postsurgical fMRI activations when processing information relevant for risky decision making. Results indicate selective impairments of ambiguous decision making pre- and postsurgically. Decision making under risk was intact. In contrast to healthy subjects the patient exhibited no activatio

Abstinent adolescent marijuana users show altered fMRI response during spatial working memory.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit substance among teenagers, yet little is known about the possible neural influence of heavy marijuana use during adolescence. We previously demonstrated an altered functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity related to spatial working memory (SWM) among adolescents who were heavy users of after an average of 8 days of abstinence, but the persisting neural effects remain unclear. To characterize the potentially persisting neurocognitive effects of heavy marijuana use in adolescence, we examined fMRI response during SWM among abstinent marijuan

Prefrontal mechanisms for executive control over emotional distraction are altered in major depression.

A dysfunction in the interaction between executive function and mood regulation has been proposed as the pathophysiology of depression. However, few studies have investigated the alteration in brain systems related to executive control over emotional distraction in depression. To address this issue, 19 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 20 healthy controls were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Participants performed an emotional oddball task in which infrequently presented circle targets required detection while sad and neutral pictures were irrelevant novel

An fMRI study of the numerical Stroop task in individuals with and without minimal cognitive impairment.

Aim of this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to dissociate normal aging and minimal cognitive impairment (MCI) concerning magnitude processing and interference control. We examined the neural correlates of a numerical Stroop task in elderly individuals with and without MCI. Fifteen elderly participants (six patients with MCI and nine controls) were subjected to a numerical Stroop task requiring numerical/physical magnitude classifications while inhibiting task-irrelevant stimulus dimensions. Effects of distance and congruity were examined. Behaviourally, robust distance a

Major depression affects perceptual filling-in.

BACKGROUND: Major depression disorder is a syndrome that involves impairment of cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and plasticity. In this study, we explored whether depression affects perception as well. METHODS: We used a recently developed paradigm that assesses the filling-in process by probing false-positive reports (false alarm [FA]), hit rates (pHit), sensitivity (d'), and decision criteria (Cr). We used a Yes-No paradigm in a low-level detection task involving a Gabor target, in the presence of collinear flankers, inducing filling-in, with differing target-flanker separati

Aberrant brain activation during gaze processing in boys with fragile X syndrome.

CONTEXT: Eye contact is a fundamental component of human social behavior. Individuals with fragile X syndrome (fraX), particularly male subjects, avoid eye contact and display other social deficits. To date (to our knowledge), this behavior in fraX has been studied only in female subjects, who show lesser degrees of gaze aversion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the neural correlates of the perception of direct eye gaze in adolescent boys with fraX using functional magnetic resonance imaging. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen adolescent boys wi

Different neural systems adjust motor behavior in response to reward and punishment.

Individuals use the outcomes of their actions to adjust future behavior. However, it remains unclear whether the same neural circuits are used to adjust behavior due to rewarding and punishing outcomes. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a reward-providing reaction time task to investigate the adaptation of a simple motor response following four different outcomes (delivery versus omission and monetary gain versus loss). We found that activation in the thalamus and insula predicted adjustments of motor responses due to outcomes that were cued and delivered, whereas a
