We have identified a new signaling role for nitric oxide (NO) in neurons from the trigeminal ganglia (TG). We show that in rat sensory neurons from the TG the NO donor, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-dl-penicillamine, inhibited M-current. This inhibitory effect was blocked by NO scavenging, while inhibition of NO synthases increased M-current, suggesting that tonic NO levels inhibit M-current in TG neurons. BACKGROUND: Spinal motoneurons may become hyperexcitable after a stroke. Knowledge about motoneuron hyperexcitability remains clinically important as it may contribute to a number of phenomena including spasticity, flexion synergies, and abnormal limb postures. Hyperexcitability seems to occur more often in muscles that flex the wrist and fingers (forearm flexors) compared to other upper limb muscles. The cause of hyperexcitability remains uncertain but may involve plastic changes in motoneurons and their axons.

Hexavalent chromium reportedly induces reproductive toxicity and further inhibits male fertility in mammals. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanism by which hexavalent chromium affects motility signaling in boar spermatozoa in vitro.
