PURPOSE: The purpose was to differentiate the dynamic knee stabilization strategies of potential copers (individuals who have the potential to compensate for the absence of an ACL without episodes of giving way after return to pre-injury activities) and non-copers (those who have knee instability following ACL rupture with return to pre-injury activities).
METHODS: Twenty subjects with ACL rupture were assigned to potential coper (n=10) and non-coper (n=10) groups via a screening examination. Ten active people without lower extremity injury were also tested. Knee angle, tibial position and mu

Twenty-one subjects with functional ankle instabilities were provided with an ankle support for all athletic and other physical activities for 3 months. Standardized tests were carried out at the beginning and after 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months. The following evaluation methods were used: KAT-2000 (static and dynamic), side stepping over 8 m, isokinetic force (Cybex 6000), angle reproduction test, SF-36 score, and Weber ankle score. Use of the ankle support improved both sensomotor and sport-specific abilities, particularly regarding dynamic requirements such as in the dynamic KAT-2000 test.

Knee rehabilitation after ACL repair with bone-tendon-bone graft is still controversial. While there was a tendency to protect the graft and the donor site in the eighties, actual tendency is to propose more aggressive, so called accelerated rehabilitation protocol. An extensive analysis of the literature shows that this accelerated rehabilitation is justified because of histologic, biomechanic, surgical and clinical arguments. This accelerated rehabilitation is based on seven reasons, at least: 1) the necrosis of the graft, initially observed in animals, does not seem to be as important in hu

Electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) in dynamic balance condition was studied in order to search for a new provocative test of space motion sickness (SMS). SMS is usually attributed to a sensory conflict caused by exposure to microgravity. Vestibular information is conflicting but also unusual and insignificant. EVS is in accordance with this feature because it is not the adequate stimulus of the vestibular receptors. EVS was achieved by means of binaural electrical stimulation. Effects of EVS were potentiated by compelling the subject to maintain dynamic balance on a seesaw. The quantifica

Masticatory muscle-pain patients often complain about sensorimotor changes, but the effects of pain on the psychophysical properties remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) on the jaw's position sense (PS) and occlusal sensitivity (OS). In all, 12 participants underwent intense concentric-eccentric jaw exercises. Self-reported muscle fatigue and pain, pain-free maximum mouth opening (MMO), pain pressure thresholds (PPTs) at right and left masseter and right and left anterior temporalis, maximum voluntary bite force (MVBF), PS and OS w

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether disorders of the inferior vestibular nerve (IVN) system affect postural stability.
METHOD: Two-legged stance tasks were performed by patients with unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy (n=108) in four conditions: eyes open or eyes closed, with or without foam rubber. We examined six parameters: the velocity of movement of the center of pressure and the envelopment area determined by tracing the movement in the eyes closed/foam rubber condition, Romberg's ratio of velocity and area with foam rubber, and the foam ratios (ratios of a measured parameter with to wi

In this study the hypothesis was tested that children with spastic hemiplegia rely more on externally guided visual feedback when trying to keep force constant with their affected hand (AH) as compared to their non-affected hand (NAH) and as compared to controls. An isometric force task in which a cursor had to be moved to a visually specified target that disappeared half way the task, was performed by 19 children with cerebral palsy (CP), spastic hemiplegia, aged between 5 and 16 years and an aged matched control group. It was found that the absolute deterioration of performance after withdra

The aim of this study was to analyse how changes in vestibular and visual reference frames combine to modify body orientation in space, and to determine the relationship between postural, oculomotor and perceptive parameters. Changes in vestibular and visual references were investigated by comparing controls and vestibular defective patients (Ménière's patients tested before and one week after unilateral vestibular nerve section) under three visual contexts (light with and without vertical and horizontal coordinates, darkness). Unilateral vestibular loss was responsible for postural and percep

BACKGROUND: Functional reach (FR) is a new clinical measurement intended to assess dynamic balance. The purposes of this study were (1) to measure the mean FR distance in healthy elders compared with individuals with known balance impairments, (2) to analyze the extent to which FR measures dynamic balance, and (3) to describe movement strategies used during FR.
METHODS: Thirteen healthy elders and 15 individuals with vestibular hypofunction (VH) were tested during FR and free gait. Whole body kinematic and kinetic data including the center of gravity (CG) and center of pressure (CP) using 11

Although neurons responsive to jaw movements have been identified in most parts of the trigeminal brainstem nuclei, little is known about how this information is relayed to the thalamus and ultimately to the cortex for kinesthetic functions and sensorimotor integration. The present extracellular recording experiments showed that a substantial amount of movement-related information is relayed to the thalamus through the caudal part of subnucleus interpolaris (Vi) in adult cats. Vertical jaw displacements, natural mechanical stimuli, and electrical stimulation of the masseter nerve were used to

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMDs) have the potential to cause changes in cervical muscle strength, muscle endurance and position sense by changing muscle activation patterns, especially as a result of forward head posture. The effects of TMDs on cervical joint position sense (CJPS) and head posture remain controversial.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the head posture and CJPS of individuals with TMDs and compare them with healthy individuals.
METHODS: This research, which was designed as a case-control study, was concluded with the inclusion of total of 84 p

To assess the postural strategies developed over the first 2 months following surgery by ACL patients during rehabilitation and highlight the sensory-motor impairment recovery, 21 patients were measured at three timeframes. Three two-legged standing conditions were assessed: with the eyes open, with the eyes closed either wearing or not wearing a knee orthosis. The results indicate that the weight-bearing asymmetry, initially observed (i.e., 56-44% of body-weight), disappeared progressively during rehabilitation (51-49%). The comparison of the plantar center-of-pressure displacements under bot

Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a major determinant for long-term sensorimotor and locomotor deficits. The model of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in 7-day-old rats produces sensorimotor cortex, thalamus and striatum injury, which are all critical for the maintenance of sensory motor function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term neurodevelopmental disturbances in the above experimental model and to assess the neuroprotective effect of MgSO(4) in terms of long-term behavioral and morphological changes. Seven-day-old rats were separated into three groups: A (control), neither ligated

The aim of this study was to better understand the mechanisms underlying the motor difficulties encountered by children born very preterm (VPT) without major sequelae from preterm birth. We compared the organization of visuo-manual aiming in preterm and full term (FT) preschool aged children based on performance and kinematics data. Twenty preterm (4 females, 16 males) and 20 sex- and age-matched FT children were divided into two age groups (mean age: 3 years-4 months, and 5 years). Comparison of the performance data showed differences between the older preterm and FT children. Kinematics data

To investigate how visual and vestibular cues are integrated for the perception of gravity during passive self-motion, we measured the ability to maintain a handheld object vertical relative to gravity without visual feedback during sinusoidal roll-tilt stimulation. Visual input, either concordant or discordant with actual dynamic roll-tilt, was delivered by a head-mounted display showing the laboratory. The four visual conditions were darkness, visual-vestibular concordance, stationary visual scene, and a visual scene 180 degrees phase-shifted relative to actual tilt. Tilt-indication performa

We investigated the effects of the subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) on shoulder sensory-motor control and maximal shoulder muscle strength. It was hypothesized that both would be impaired due to chronic shoulder pain associated with the syndrome. Nine subjects with unilateral SIS who remained physically active in spite of shoulder pain and nine healthy matched controls were examined to determine isometric and isokinetic submaximal shoulder-abduction force steadiness at target forces corresponding to 20%, 27.5%, and 35% of the maximal shoulder abductor torque, and maximal shoulder muscle

This study explored the effect of vibration of the forearm extensors on motor cortical excitability and the influence of stimulus duration. Sixteen healthy volunteers between 23 and 42 years old participated in one or two studies. We applied 15 or 30 min of 100 Hz, 0.5 mm-amplitude vibration to the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) muscle. Cortical excitability was measured as the magnitude of the motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), and the size of the representation area associated with ECRL and flexor carpi ulnaris muscles was determined with the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. A 3
