Transcriptomics reveals species-specific adaptive strategies to calorie restriction in two Argopecten scallops with distinct lifespans.

Calorie restriction (CR) is a well-established non-genetic intervention for lifespan extension in multiple model organisms. Seasonal food shortage in cold and temperate seas may mimic CR, inducing in bivalves a response similar to that in vertebrates and thereby prolonging life expectancy. However, the relationship and the mechanism underlying the food availability and lifespan in bivalves remain largely unexplored. Two closely related scallop species the short-lived warm-water Argopecten irradians (lifespan <2 years) and the longer-lived cold-water Argopecten purpuratus (7-10 years) provide a

Carbon sequestration and stress resilience potential of select dominant tropical tree species of Indian subcontinent under combined elevated CO2, O3, and climate stress.

During the last two decades, a number of research outcomes have vetted possible plant responses to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and other climate stressors in temperate trees and agricultural crops. However, such climate change repercussions (elevated CO2, O3, temperature, and drought) on tropical trees, especially on dominant trees of the Indian subcontinent, remain largely unexplored. This study investigates the productivity of selected species (Pongamia pinnata, Ficus benghalensis, Azadirachta indica, and Syzygium cumini) under three experimental settings, 1) Combined Stress Condition (SC) - Carbon

Impact of climate change on the global circulation of chikungunya virus: current evidence, future projections, and adaptation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is accelerating the circulation of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), posing a significant threat to both endemic areas and immunologically naive temperate regions. This study aims to synthesize empirical climatic drivers, future transmission projections, and global adaptation strategies to evaluate current evidence and identify key research gaps. METHODS: This scoping review completed protocol registration on the Open Science Framework prior to literature retrieval, with systematic searches conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and EBSCOhost to collect all re

Spectroscopic and molecular-level characterization of partricins' self-association in aqueous solution.

Aromatic heptaene macrolides are structurally related to amphotericin B, an agent of reference in treatment of systemic fungal infections, but contain an additional aromatic side chain and a native cis-trans polyene chromophore. Their strong biological activity and toxicity are likely influenced not only by molecular structure, but also by supramolecular organization in aqueous media. Here, we combined concentration-dependent UV-Vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy with molecular simulations to characterize the self-association of native partricins and their all-trans photoisomers. PCA

CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing platform development by targeting genes encoding magnesium chelatase and phytoene desaturase in sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.).

Sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris, L.), is a vital temperate crop, supplying nearly 40% of the world's sugar. However, its high susceptibility to bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases creates an urgent need for improved, disease-resistant cultivars. The CRISPR/Cas9 system has rapidly advanced plant genetic engineering by enabling precise and targeted genome modifications. Our goal is to establish a gene-editing platform in sugarbeet to support future development of disease-resistant lines by targeting the candidate genes. In this study, we applied CRISPR/Cas9 to generate targeted mutation

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Physiological Responses and Cold Tolerance of Annual Shoots from Different Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium L.) Cultivars Under Low-Temperature Stress.

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a high-value horticultural crop; however, winter freezing injury significantly limits its introduction and stable production in cold-temperate regions. In this study, annual shoots of 16 major sweet cherry cultivars were collected during the dormancy phase and subjected to a simulated low-temperature gradient. Eight physiological indicators, namely, relative electrolyte conductivity (REC), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, osmoregulatory substances, and antioxidant enzyme activities, were systematically measured along with the poststress recovery growth percentag

How Did a Size-Divergent Water Strider Species Group Exhibiting an East Asia-Eastern North America Disjunction Originate and Diversify?

The classic East Asia-Eastern North America (EA-ENA) disjunction, well-documented in temperate plants, is typically attributed to the fragmentation of once-continuous high-latitude ranges by climatic cooling and regional extinction. Whether this model extends to insects, particularly aquatic groups, remains largely untested with genomic data. Here, we integrate whole-genome sequencing, ddRAD-seq and morphology with phylogenetic, phylogeographic, genotype-environment association (GEA) and niche modelling analyses to reconstruct the origin and diversification of the Aquarius conformis species gr

Fall Risk Identification with Innovative Technologies for Aging in Place: A Clinical Needs Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence among older adults. While gait-monitoring technologies offer promise for early fall risk detection, adoption is hindered by usability, cost, and integration challenges. Few studies incorporate perspectives from both patients and providers to inform user-centred design. OBJECTIVE: To identify barriers, facilitators, and design considerations for implementing gait-monitoring and fall-assessment technologies among older adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers. METHODS: A qualitative needs assessment was conducted with

Low-latitude environmental regularity supports circadian organisation in blind adults.

The light-dark cycle shaped by Earth's rotation provided the evolutionary conditions under which circadian rhythms emerged. Consistent with this, previous studies indicate that less than 40% of total blind individuals, who lack photic input, entrain to the 24-h cycle, further evidencing the critical role of light as the dominant zeitgeber for circadian alignment. However, this assumption has been tested almost exclusively in temperate, high-latitude regions, where environmental cues vary seasonally. Near the equator, by contrast, photoperiod and temperature cycles remain exceptionally stable.

Secular trends in osteoporosis prevalence at first presentation over 26 years in a regional Irish DEXA registry: a retrospective repeated cross-sectional analysis.

UNLABELLED: Declining osteoporosis prevalence at first DEXA presentation over 26 years in a regional Irish registry suggests improving baseline skeletal health independent of demographic shifts. If sustained, these trends may temper projected fracture burden, with implications for prevention strategies and health-system planning. PURPOSE: Despite decades of investment in fracture prevention and growing clinical awareness of osteoporosis, whether the skeletal health of individuals presenting for assessment has actually improved remains unknown. We investigated secular trends in osteoporosis pr

Multi-Tissue Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Tissue-Specific Thermal Responses and Sex-Biased Functional Differentiation in Reproductive Tissues of the Brown Frog (Rana dybowskii).

The brown frog (Rana dybowskii) is an important cold-temperate amphibian species in northeastern China, with considerable ecological and resource value. Because its survival, metabolism, and reproduction are highly sensitive to environmental temperature, elucidating the molecular mechanism's underlying temperature response is of great significance for understanding environmental adaptation and reproductive regulation in amphibians. In this study, R. dybowskii was used as the experimental model, and a multi-tissue transcriptomic analysis was conducted on the brain, liver, spleen, ovary, oviduct

From conventional biologics-device combination products to advanced therapies: current state and future trends in patient-centric delivery.

Patient-centric Biologics-Device Combination Products (BDCP) improve patient experience and compliance, while enhancing therapeutic outcomes by enabling novel routes of delivery, tackling frequent dosing and large-volume delivery requirements, and/or by simplifying administration in a healthcare setting as well as in out-patient dosing (e.g. self-administration). They also present promising solutions to overcome vaccine immunization challenges, particularly in developing nations. The BDCP opportunities, however, are often tempered by intrinsic properties of biologics (e.g. stability, viscosity

Molecular characterization of circannual interval timing in the preoptic area and anteroventral periventricular nucleus in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Most temperate animals exhibit seasonal rhythms in reproductive physiology and behaviour. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) cells in the preoptic area (POA) and kisspeptin (Kiss) cells in the anteroventral periventricular (AvPv) nucleus are critical for timing photoperiod-induced changes in seasonal reproduction. In response to prolonged exposure to photoperiod cues, many rodents exhibit endogenously generated programmed changes in physiology that reflect a circannual timing mechanism. Here we used transcriptome sequencing coupled with measurements of surface body temperature and testes ma

Simultaneous assessment of particle and dissolved emerging road pollutants in roadside retention ponds under baseflow conditions.

Particle road pollutants (tyre and road wear particles [TRWPs] and road lining paint fragments) and dissolved chemicals (tyre and plastic-related additive chemicals) are emerging aquatic contaminants. Roadside retention ponds are key pathways for their transport. However, studies focus on pollutant influx during storm events. Baseflow conditions between storm events in drainage systems with continuous flow (e.g., in temperate climates) need investigated. Therefore, two retention pond systems alongside a trunk road were monitored during summer and winter baseflow conditions. Particle concentrat

Heat-mitigation effects of protective sheets in the construction industry for the prevention of heat stress disorders.

OBJECTIVES: This study experimentally investigated whether highly heat-shielding protective sheets used at construction sites could reduce heat stress. METHODS: A construction-site simulation apparatus was installed in an artificial climate chamber, and direct solar radiation was simulated using infrared heating. Tempered glass partitions allowed the installation of different sheet materials. Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), air temperature (Ta), globe temperature (Tg), and relative humidity (RH) were continuously measured on both the indoor and outdoor sides. Three environmental conditions

Zileuton, 5-lipoxygenase blocker, modulates acute inflammatory response in Nile tilapia.

Pharmacological control of leukotriene biosynthesis is well established in mammals, but its translational value for teleost inflammation remains unclear. We evaluated oral 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) inhibition with zileuton in Nile tilapia challenged with a bacterin of A. hydrophila to induce acute aerocystitis. Fish received vehicle or zileuton (2.25 or 4.50 mg/kg) before challenge. Outcomes were assessed at 6, 24, and 48 h post-inoculation (hpi) to investigate cellular profiles in exudates and blood, reactive oxygen species (ROS), acute-phase proteins (APPs), and the formation of splenic melano-

How host mobility formulations shape estimates of pathogen dispersal and epidemic risk in non endemic regions.

The global warming effects of climate change favor the stable residence of invasive vectors, such as the mosquito Aedes albopictus, in temperate areas, like the Mediterranean basin or north America. Thus, favorable weather conditions, together with human mobility, increase the likelihood of large-scale vector-borne disease epidemics in areas where they were historically not endemic. While mathematical modeling acknowledges the relevance of human mobility in the persistence or prevalence of vector-borne diseases in endemic areas, the combined role of host-mediated vector transport and long-rang

High-light gaps and carbon allocation regulate regeneration of understory Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings.

Against the backdrop of climate warming, understanding the regeneration mechanisms of seedlings under forest canopies is crucial for the sustainable development of temperate forests. Broad-leaved Korean pine forests serve as the zonally climax vegetation in the Changbai Mountains, however, the causes of regeneration barriers for their primary tree species remain unclear. In particular, while shade-tolerant Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings struggle to regenerate in primary forests, they regenerate well in secondary poplar-birch forests. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism responsible for this

Cardio-Oncology in Cold Climates: Epidemiological Features, Bidirectional Interaction Mechanisms, and Integrated Management Strategies.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are leading causes of death worldwide, with their comorbidity posing a major public health challenge. In cold regions (latitude ≥ 45° or annual mean temperature ≤ 10 °C), this dual burden is exacerbated by unique environmental exposures and lifestyle factors. This review aims to systematically characterize the epidemiological features of CVD and cancer in cold regions, elucidate the mechanisms by which cold exposure synergistically exacerbates cancer therapy-related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT), and propose a comprehensive, cold-region-tailored mana
