Kaposi's sarcoma and its management in AIDS patients. Recommendations from a Scandinavian Study Group.

KS is the most frequent malignancy in homo/bisexual male AIDS patients, affecting more than 30% of these patients. KS may present itself as a few innocent cutaneous lesions or may show progression resulting in severe morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of the patients may develop severe progressive disease. The prognosis of patients with progressive disease is poor, with a median survival of less than 6 months. There is no cure for AIDS-related KS, but several therapies are available for palliation. The treatment options may be applied locally or systemically. Radiotherapy is efficacio

Geography of AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Classical Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is about four times more common in southern Europeans than in northern Europeans. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of AIDS-associated KS (AIDS-KS) in Europe and to determine whether it occurs with increased frequency in southern Europe. METHODS: Analysis of the 'European non-aggregate AIDS data set', as of September 1995. Countries with a cumulative total of > or = 50 KS cases as the presenting manifestation of AIDS were included. Homosexual men were excluded from south versus non-south comparisons because of possible confounding effects due

Pediatric sexology and hermaphroditism.

Lacking an empirically based theory of erotosexual development and health in childhood, pediatrics too easily falls back on reductionistic hypotheses of the nature versus nurture type. A new, three-term paradigm, namely, nature/critical-period/nurture, is needed to explain, for example, the phenomenology of hermaphroditism, and the differentiation of gender-identity/role (G-I/R) in individual cases. In 30 young women with a history of the early-treated, 46,XX congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia (CVAH) syndrome, 37% (N = 11) had a history of bisexual imagery or practice, as compared with

"Inclusive Care" Is Not Always Affirming Care: Reflecting on Perspectives From LGBTQIA+ Consumers and Providers.

Enhancing healthcare experiences for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and people with other diverse identities, experiences and bodies (LGBTQIA+) is a complex and evolving challenge. While policy and professional frameworks often focus on inclusive processes, LGBTQIA+ people emphasise affirming experiences, including being listened to, validated, respected, and having their lived experiences recognised, over specialised clinical expertise alone. Consumers describe affirming care as feeling seen, respected, and safe within clinical encounters, experiences that contr

Multiple methods findings from a systematic scoping review and qualitative interviews to inform LGBTQ+ affirming practices for nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other gender and sexual minority people (LGBTQ+) individuals face dramatic inequities in health outcomes across the US and especially those residing in the Deep South due to pervasive LGBTQ+-related stigma and discrimination. A significant barrier repeatedly noted is the lack of clinicians trained to provide LGBTQ+-affirming care. Given that nurses play a critical role in patient care, research was needed to inform the development and piloting of LGBTQ+-specific curriculum for nursing faculty. METHODS: We conducted a multiple-methods study c

Building pain resilience in LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and individuals with other related experiences or identities (LGBTQIA+) experience chronic pain and disability at twice the rate as their cisgender, endosex, and heterosexual counterparts. These disparities are shaped by intersecting social, structural, and historical factors, including minority stress, health care discrimination, and barriers to affirming care. While contextualized approaches to pain management have been recommended to address the unique lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, prevailing pain models largely rem

Access to fertility care for LGBTIQ+ and unpartnered persons: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a major public health concern, and many individuals face substantial barriers to accessing fertility care. Across jurisdictions, regulations, eligibility criteria and funding frameworks for fertility care vary considerably, particularly in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer/questioning people (LGBTIQ+), as well as unpartnered individuals. Moreover, existing definitions and prevalence estimates of infertility are largely derived from studies of heterosexual couples which may underestimate the need for fertility care among other popul

From silos to synergies: harnessing the power of sexual health data sources in England to understand changing epidemiology and inform policy.

OBJECTIVES: Following major changes to sexual health provision in England in the past decade, monitoring and evaluation of population-level interventions require re-examination to ensure quality and visibility of key communities. We make the case that sexual health data sources might be used synergistically to improve sexual health and tackle inequalities. METHODS: We conducted a purposive narrative review to (1) describe national sexual health policy and provision changes in England in the past decade (2012 onwards), (2) map key sexual health data resources and (3) demonstrate how integrated

Trends of bacterial sexually transmitted infections with doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis among people using pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV.

BACKGROUND: People using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV are at high risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We aimed to assess the impact of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) on the incidences of STIs among PrEP users in the real-world setting. METHODS: From February 2022 to November 2025, participants aged ≥18 years receiving HIV PrEP were prospectively enrolled. STI testing at baseline and follow-up included syphilis serology and multiplex real-time PCR assays for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma genitalium. Beginning in N

A nationwide study of risk factors for long COVID and its economic and mental health consequences in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, concerns have been increasingly raised over the future public health and economic burden of long COVID including disability and declines in labor force participation. However, only a handful of U.S. studies have explored sociodemographic or socioeconomic characteristics that put people at risk of long COVID or have investigated its economic and mental health sequelae. METHODS: Using repeated cross-sectional data on over 375,000 adults including nearly 50,000 adults with long COVID pooled from U.S. nationally-representative Household Pulse Survey data collecte
