Soft tissue masses around the foot and ankle are frequent. While benign lesions are two times more frequent than malignant lesions, the latter still represent one third of all lesions. The main purpose of this article is to propose a systematic approach to the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors of the foot and ankle based on a combination of 5 elements: clinical history and physical examination, top 10 most frequent diagnoses, patient age, lesion location, and MRI features of the mass. Selected soft tissue tumors will be described and illustrated with emphasis on these 5 elements.

BACKGROUND: The authors report the gynaecological pathology of surgical interest occurring in an Emergency Department in the first half of 2000 and occasionally found during an operation in women who presented a pelvic mass or abdominal pain.
METHODS: Six women, average age of 50 years, reached the Emergency Department: five of them were operated with an emergency procedure.
RESULTS: Of the 6 cases, 1 patient was affected by uterine mass, 1 by uterine-ovarian mass and 3 by ovarian mass; in one patient, affected by ovarian tumour, another intervention was necessary for intestinal metastasis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess disease progression in baboons (Papio cynocephalus) that were infected with two human immunodeficiency virus-2 (HIV-2) isolates.
METHODS: Eight baboons were inoculated intravenously with either HIV-2UC2 or HIV-2UC14 and were followed for a 2- to 7-year period of observation.

We report 4 cases of CD34+ fibromyxoid lesion that have been previously diagnosed as "benign myxoid lesion," "nodular mucinosis," or "mammary myofibroblastoma, myxoid type" on the basis of CD34-positivity. Superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAF) is an uncommon benign dermal mesenchymal lesion of adults with predilection for acral sites, in particular the nail region. To date, less than 300 cases have been reported. SAFs consistently express CD34, but other diagnostic markers or specific genetic alterations have not been established yet. In the differential diagnosis of syndromes of endocrine hyperfunction, the ectopic hormone syndromes have achieved an increasingly prominent position. Available evidence on the properties of ectopic ACTH, MSH, parathyroid hormone, erythropoietin, gonadotropins, and thyrotropin is consistent with the unifying hypothesis of genetic derepression.
