Impact of permethrin-treated bed nets on malaria and all-cause morbidity in young children in an area of intense perennial malaria transmission in western Kenya: cross-sectional survey.

Information on the impact of insecticide (permethrin)-treated bed nets (ITNs) from randomized controlled trials in areas of intense perennial malaria transmission is limited. As part of a large-scale, community-based, group-randomized controlled trial of the effect of ITNs on childhood mortality in a holoendemic area in western Kenya, we conducted three cross-sectional surveys in 60 villages to assess the impact of ITNs on morbidity in 1,890 children less than three years old. Children in ITN and control villages were comparable pre-intervention, but after the introduction of ITNs, children in

Characterization of the screwworm flies Cochliomyia hominivorax and Cochliomyia macellaria by PCR-RFLP of mitochondrial DNA.

The primary screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most important insect pests of livestock in neotropical regions, whereas Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the secondary screwworm, is of medical and sanitary importance because of its role in the dissemination of pathogens. These two species share morphological similarities and both may occur in the same myiasis, but in different developmental stages. In this work, the usefulness of PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism) of mit

Dengue in the Western Hemisphere.

Dengue is an important insect-borne viral disease, transmitted in the Western hemisphere by the A. aegypti mosquito. It is endemic in the Caribbean with sporadic outbreaks in different regions. Cases in the United States are mostly imported cases but can be seen in the Gulf states as well as the Southeast. Dengue is most frequently a self-limiting illness characterized by sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, retroocular pain, general malaise, myalgias, arthralgias, and a skin rash. In a small group of patients, the same viruses may cause dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.

Human IGF1 regulates midgut oxidative stress and epithelial homeostasis to balance lifespan and Plasmodium falciparum resistance in Anopheles stephensi.

Insulin and insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS) regulates cell death, repair, autophagy, and renewal in response to stress, damage, and pathogen challenge. Therefore, IIS is fundamental to lifespan and disease resistance. Previously, we showed that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) within a physiologically relevant range (0.013-0.13 µM) in human blood reduced development of the human parasite Plasmodium falciparum in the Indian malaria mosquito Anopheles stephensi. Low IGF1 (0.013 µM) induced FOXO and p70S6K activation in the midgut and extended mosquito lifespan, whereas high IGF1 (0

Identification and distribution of a GABA receptor mutation conferring dieldrin resistance in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus in Africa.

Growing problems of pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles funestus have intensified efforts to identify alternative insecticides. Many agrochemicals target the GABA receptors, but cross-resistance from dieldrin resistance may preclude their introduction. Dieldrin resistance was detected in An. funestus populations from West (Burkina Faso) and central (Cameroon) Africa, but populations from East (Uganda) and Southern Africa (Mozambique and Malawi) were fully susceptible to this insecticide. Partial sequencing of the dieldrin target site, the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor, identified two amin

Potential mitigating role of ivermectin on the spread of Chlamydia trachomatis by Musca sorbens.

Trachoma is the world's most frequent cause of blindness from an infectious agent. The disease caused by infection is associated with lack of access to sanitation and low hygiene standards. Trachoma is controlled through the Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement (SAFE) strategy, which delivers azithromycin (AZM) mass drug administration (MDA) in endemic areas. The putative vector Musca sorbens principally reproduce in human faecal matter left in the environment due to open defecation. Ivermectin (IVM) is on the WHO's essential medicines list and is administere

Exploring the hormetic effects of radiation on the life table parameters of Spodoptera frugiperda.

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda, a global agricultural pest, can be effectively controlled through the sterile insect technique. However, exposure to low-dose radiation below the sterilization threshold may induce hormetic effects. Here, the biphasic aspects of the fertile progeny population of S. frugiperda were analyzed using an age-stage, two-sex life table after dosing male and female pupae with 10-350 Gy gamma radiation. RESULTS: The parental sterilizing dose for 6-day-old female and male pupae was 200 and 350 Gy, respectively. The total longevity, pre-adult survival rate, net reproduc

Prevalence of atopic diseases in children with papular urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Papular urticaria is a hypersensitivity reaction characterized by chronic and recurrent papular erythema. It occurs as a result of the bites of mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, and other insects; and it is generally seen in children. This study examines the prevalence of atopic diseases in patients with papular urticaria. METHODS: The medical records of 130 pediatric patients with the diagnosis of papular urticaria between August 2017 and August 2019, whose disease progression was followed in two tertiary care centers, were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two

Head lice were also affected by COVID-19: a decrease on Pediculosis infestation during lockdown in Buenos Aires.

Pediculosis is a worldwide disease affecting school-aged children produced by the presence of the head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer, an obligate ectoparasite on the human scalp feeding exclusively on blood. Transmission occurs primarily through direct physical head-to-head contact. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, a variant of the coronavirus. Therefore, on March 18, 2020, the Argentinean government established mandatory isolation for an indefinite period. This obligatory isolation int

New frontiers and prospects of metal-organic frameworks for removal, determination, and sensing of pesticides.

Pesticides have been widely used in agriculture to control, reduce, and kill insects. Humans are also being using pesticides to control insidious animals in daily life. By these practices, a huge volume of pesticides is introduced to the environment. Despite broad-spectrum applicability, pesticides also have hazardous effects on both humans and animals at high and low concentrations. Long-term exposure to pesticides can cause different diseases, like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testis, and ovaries. Reproductive disorders from pesticides include birth defect

Floral Traits, Pollination and Reproductive Differentiation in Gynodioecious Minuartia nifensis (Caryophyllaceae).

The endemic Minuartia nifensis, the only known gynodioecious species of its genus, offers a suitable model for understanding the relationships between floral characteristics, pollination, and mating systems in species with narrow distributions and single populations. We analyzed population structure, floral morphology, pollen viability, stigma receptivity, mating system components, and pollinator assemblages using field observations, morphometric measurements, controlled pollination experiments (autogamy, allogamy, apomixis and open pollination), and standardized pollinator surveys. The popula

Pre-cracked sutures fractured by amplified forces: mechanism of efficient eclosion in arboreal butterflies.

Natural strategies for structural transition during metamorphosis display remarkable efficiency and mechanical sophistication. In butterflies, the transition from pupa to adult involves not only dramatic morphological transformation but also a finely tuned mechanical breakthrough. In this combined experimental and theoretical investigation, we report a pre-cracked fracture mechanism in the butterflyIdea leuconoe, where the adult butterfly exits through a structural weak link-referred to as a suture-embedded within the pupal shell. This suture functions as a precracked line, enabling a rapid an

Effects of DNA 6mA methylation on female reproduction in Bactrocera dorsalis.

BACKGROUND: DNA 6mA methylation is a critical epigenetic modification that significantly regulates a diverse range of biological processes. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying its regulation of the reproductive development of insects remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate the molecular mechanism by which DNA 6mA methylation regulates female reproduction in Bactrocera dorsalis. RESULTS: RNA interference-mediated knockdown of BdJumu, which binds to 6mA-labeled DNA, significantly decreases the level of DNA 6mA methylation in the ovary of B. dorsalis. Moreover, compared with f

Crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) negatively regulates sand-diving behaviour in kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus.

Kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) exhibits sand-diving behaviour. The genetic control mechanism of this behaviour is still unclear, although previous single-cell transcriptome sequencing suggests that crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) may be involved. In this study, we cloned the CCAP precursor cDNA (Pj-CCAP) in kuruma shrimp. It was predicted that the gene can be translated into four related peptides and one mature peptide (PFCNAFTGC-NH2), and is highly similar to crustaceans and insects. The predicted Pj-CCAP itself is highly conserved in other crustaceans. RT-qPCR and in situ hybridiza

Effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy 1830 and their forensic implications.

Benzodiazepines are commonly identified in drug overdose deaths worldwide. However, research on their effects on the most common necrophagous insect species is limited. In this context, the current study investigated the effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Three blow fly colonies were reared under controlled laboratory conditions (24℃, 50% humidity, 12:12 light-dark cycle), and the experiment was carried out in triplicate. A solution of 4 mg of clonazepam and 2 mg of flunitrazepam, each dissolve

Livestock and avermectins in sub-Saharan Africa: a restricted systematic review of the impacts on productivity and documentation of resistance.

There is growing interest in using avermectins in livestock as a vector control tool for mosquitoes involved in the transmission of human malaria in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). If implemented, the potential health and productivity impacts across the livestock sector would need to be considered, as avermectins are already commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat gastrointestinal helminths and parasitic insects. Here we present the results of a restricted systematic review that summarizes what is known about the effects of avermectins on cattle and swine productivity in SSA and the presence o

A Scientific Review of Pesticides: Classification, Toxicity, Health Effects, Sustainability, and Environmental Impact.

Over the years, the use of pesticides has risen significantly, primarily to combat undesirable organisms that threaten crucial crops. A variety of pesticides are available, each designed to protect crops from specific threats like fungi, bacteria, and other pests. Other than crop protection, pesticides are also used in controlling insect vector-borne diseases like malaria and Lyme disease in humans. However, the application of these pesticides must be carefully measured and managed to prevent adverse effects on humans, non-target animals, and the environment. This review delves into the detail
