Go Beyond Compliance: Use Individualized Education Programs to Answer Strategic Questions and Improve Programs.

PURPOSE: The most significant document to ensure effective and compliant design, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of a program of special education services in the United States is the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Although IEPs have been used to document procedural compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for individual students, IEPs also provide extensive data that can and should be used by a variety of stakeholders including speech-language pathologists (SLPs), school administrators, and state education agencies to design targeted professi

Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors for Crohn's disease relapses using natural language processing and machine learning: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of relapses on disease burden in Crohn's disease (CD) warrants searching for predictive factors to anticipate relapses. This requires analysis of large datasets, including elusive free-text annotations from electronic health records. This study aims to describe clinical characteristics and treatment with biologics of CD patients and generate a data-driven predictive model for relapse using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). METHODS: We performed a multicenter, retrospective study using a previously validated corpus of CD patient data from eight

Identifying Axial Spondyloarthritis in Electronic Medical Records of US Veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Large database research in axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) is limited by a lack of methods for identifying most types of axial SpA. Our objective was to develop methods for identifying axial SpA concepts in the free text of documents from electronic medical records. METHODS: Veterans with documents in the national Veterans Health Administration Corporate Data Warehouse between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2015 were included. Methods were developed for exploring, selecting, and extracting meaningful terms that were likely to represent axial SpA concepts. With annotation, clinical expe

The importance of radiation chemistry to radiation and free radical biology (The 2008 Silvanus Thompson Memorial Lecture).

Biological effects of radiation are manifest over timescales extending to years. However, many chemical events are complete in milliseconds; after this time, adding oxygen to irradiated hypoxic cells no longer enhances radiosensitivity. This does not mean that damage pathways cannot be modified; the potential gain from chemical modulation of early events is as large as any associated with later pathways, and the prognostic importance of variations in levels of small molecules active in fast free radical pathways is as important as any associated with genetic make-up. Reactive oxygen species ar

Interaction with AI companions and psychological well-being.

As large-language-model-enhanced chatbots become increasingly expressive and socially responsive, many users begin forming companionship-like bonds with them. This study investigates how using AI companions relates to psychological well-being. We collected self-reported data from 1,131 US adults who use Character.AI, including survey responses and 4,664 chat sessions (464,687 messages) from 237 participants. By triangulating self-reported usage, relationship descriptions and real chat histories, we identify patterns of engagement and associated outcomes. Smaller social networks were associated

GLM-Prior: a genomic language model for transferable sequence-derived priors in gene regulatory network inference.

Gene regulatory network inference depends on high-quality prior knowledge, yet curated priors are often incomplete or unavailable across species and cell types. We present GLM-Prior, a genomic language model fine-tuned to predict transcription factor-target gene interactions from nucleotide sequence. We integrate GLM-Prior with PMF-GRN in a dual-stage pipeline that combines sequence-derived priors with single-cell expression data for prior-conditioned GRN inference. Across six cell-line contexts, GLM-Prior performance scales with positive label abundance and TF coverage, showing above-chance a

Just Semantics? How Diagnostic Criteria Influence Physician-Patient Narratives in Alzheimer's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: The current diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is shaped by the Alzheimer's Association (AA) and the International Working Group (IWG) criteria. While both frameworks lead to similar physician-patient conversations when disclosing biomarker results to patients with cognitive impairment, they diverge significantly for cognitively unimpaired individuals. The aim of this paper is to explore these differences and their associated epistemological and ethical implications, through simulated, case-based physician-patient conversations. METHODS: The conversations were developed on th

A never-ending prediction: meta-prediction, counter-oscillatory system and traumatic affordance.

This article comes back on the hypothesis developed by the evolutionary theory of the sensorimotor paradox that our capacity to produce mental representation could be derived from a dissociation of sensory prediction systems from motor action. As they should be then coordinated together, we are drawing further possible leads regarding the intermediary space between linear mental projections that are not bound and stopped by sensory feedback, and ongoing sensory perception whether large or discrete. Dissociated prediction would be eventually interrupted by sensory input, getting lost, reinitiat

A Multimodal, Electrocardiography-Centric Clinical Data Platform With Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Querying for Cardiovascular Research.

OBJECTIVE: Large-scale electrocardiographic (ECG) datasets are increasingly available but remain fragmented, poorly integrated with patient-level phenotypic data, and difficult for clinicians to query without programming expertise. We present VRCardio-Helper-Database, a unified clinical data platform that integrates ECG recordings from nine sources with patient demographic and anthropometric information and exposes an artificial-intelligence-assisted natural-language querying interface, built on a Model Context Protocol server, that translates clinical questions into safe, read-only database q

Multimodal behavioral phenotyping for depressive-spectrum classification and severity estimation using eye tracking, facial behavior, and transcript-derived language.

INTRODUCTION: Depression assessment remains largely dependent on symptom reports and clinician judgment, while objective tools for depressive-spectrum stratification and severity estimation remain limited. Existing digital and multimodal depression-detection studies often focus on binary case-control classification, handle missing modalities incompletely, provide limited calibration assessment, and rarely combine depressive-spectrum classification with continuous symptom-severity estimation. We therefore developed a quality-aware multimodal framework integrating eye tracking, facial behavior,

Towards Intelligent Agents for Radiotherapy: Integrating Exploration-Exploitation with Foundation Models.

This study proposes an automated approach to radiotherapy treatment planning by integrating a reinforcement-learning-style iterative framework with a multimodal Large Language Model (LLM). We specifically investigate the problem of Beam Angle Optimization, a high-dimensional and non-convex subproblem of Treatment Planning. Our system employs GPT-4V to select candidate beam angles and analyze three-dimensional dose distributions generated by Monte Carlo simulations within the MatRAD environment. Iterative plan refinement is guided by a reward function that encourages target dose conformity and

Contemporary attitudes and beliefs on coronary artery calcium from social media using artificial intelligence.

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a powerful tool to refine atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment. Despite its growing interest, contemporary public attitudes around CAC are not well-described in literature and have important implications for shared decision-making around cardiovascular prevention. We used an artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline consisting of a semi-supervised natural language processing model and unsupervised machine learning techniques to analyze 5,606 CAC-related discussions on Reddit. A total of 91 discussion topics were identified and were classif

Clinical and structural disconnectome evaluation in a case of optic aphasia.

Optic Aphasia (OA) and Associative Visual Agnosia (AVA) are neuropsychological disorders characterized by impaired naming on visual presentation. From a cognitive point of view, while stimulus identification is largely unimpaired in OA (where access to semantic knowledge is still possible), in AVA it is not. OA has been linked with right hemianopia and disconnection of the occipital right-hemisphere (RH) visual processing from the left hemisphere (LH) language areas. In this paper, we describe the case of AA, an 81-year-old housewife suffering from a deficit in naming visually presented stimuli

Supramodal Sentence Processing in the Human Brain: fMRI Evidence for the Influence of Syntactic Complexity in More Than 200 Participants.

This study investigated two questions. One is: To what degree is sentence processing beyond single words independent of the input modality (speech vs. reading)? The second question is: Which parts of the network recruited by both modalities is sensitive to syntactic complexity? These questions were investigated by having more than 200 participants read or listen to well-formed sentences or series of unconnected words. A largely left-hemisphere frontotemporoparietal network was found to be supramodal in nature, i.e., independent of input modality. In addition, the left inferior frontal gyrus (L

Deep learning-based speech analysis for Alzheimer's disease detection: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease has become one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide, which seriously affects the health of the elderly. Early detection and intervention are the most effective prevention methods currently. Compared with traditional detection methods such as traditional scale tests, electroencephalograms, and magnetic resonance imaging, speech analysis is more convenient for automatic large-scale Alzheimer's disease detection and has attracted extensive attention from researchers. In particular, deep learning-based speech analysis and language processing techn

Cluster-Based Analysis of Retinitis Pigmentosa Modifiers Using Drosophila Eye Size and Gene Expression Data.

The goal of this research is to computationally identify candidate modifiers for retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a group of rare genetic disorders that trigger the cellular degeneration of retinal tissue. RP being subject to phenotypic variation complicates diagnosis and treatment of the disease. In a previous study, modifiers of RP were identified by an association between genetic variation in the DNA sequence and variation in eye size in a well-characterized Drosophila model of RP. This study will instead focus on RNA expression data to identify candidate modifier genes whose expression is correl
