Lung Health of Early COPD (LHEC): A Multi-Center Cohort Study-Rational and Design.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the early stage of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially in nonsmokers. More efforts should be made to investigate the characteristics of this stage, as well as to identify biomarkers for early diagnosis. This study aimed to build a national cohort of patients with early COPD in China to address the current research gaps in this area. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We intend to enroll 1500 participants aged 35 to 75 years with post-bronchodilator spirometry showing a forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity ratio below 0

Bilingualism Does Not Hinder Grammatical Development in Down Syndrome: Evidence from a Sentence Repetition Task.

Despite the growing number of bilinguals worldwide, research on how bilingualism influences grammatical development in children with learning disabilities remains limited. This may be due to challenges in assessing language in these children, given the heterogeneity of their disabilities, lack of appropriate tools, and variability in language background and exposure common in bilingual populations. This pilot study investigates grammatical abilities in bilingual versus monolingual children with Down syndrome using the LITMUS Sentence Repetition Task, specifically designed for bilingual populat

Reduced ovarian reserve among female offspring of consanguineous marriages in the Middle East-a mini review.

BACKGROUND: Consanguineous marriages remain prevalent in many regions of the world, particularly within the Middle East, where reported prevalence exceeds 50% in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Despite evidence that consanguineous marriages increase genetic risks through increased levels of homozygosity, which might lead to gene dysfunction, their impact on female fertility remains unclear. Although the data is limited and inconsistent, female offspring of consanguineous marriages appear to have a higher risk of reduced ovarian reserve compared to their peer

Acute kidney injury magnitude, mortality, and associated factors among neonates in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the most frequent clinical problem that occurs in neonates, and it is associated with different medical problems. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for a large majority of global neonatal mortality due to infection, prematurity, and birth asphyxia. All these factors are the major risk factors for AKI. AKI is an emerging significant health care concern, influenced by unique regional challenges. Despite its high burden on neonates, there is a lack of compiled evidence in sub-Saharan Africa that shows the burden of AKI among neonates. This systematic review and meta-analysi

Childhood Maltreatment Impacts Cognitive Function in Emerging Adulthood: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Extant literature demonstrated mixed findings on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and executive function. This meta-analysis aimed to consolidate the current findings and investigate the long-term influences of child maltreatment on cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory in emerging adults. PsycINFO (EBSCO), ERIC (EBSCO), ERIC (ProQuest), COCHRANE, and MEDLINE were searched to identify a final sample of 17 studies. Inclusion criteria were studies that recruited emerging adults, measured childhood maltreatment, and included specific measurements of cognitiv

Treatment patterns, care delays and outcomes in advanced cervical cancer: study protocol for a mixed retrospective and prospective single-centre cohort in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer (CaCx) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in South Africa, often presenting at advanced stages and requiring chemoradiotherapy. In South Africa, the burden is disproportionately high among women living with HIV, with limited access to radiotherapy further compounding treatment challenges. Despite this documented disparity, limited data exist on patients in a South African context. This protocol describes the research methodology to assess patterns of care, treatment delays, interruptions and survival outcomes in patients with advanced CaCx, ad

Near-infrared spectroscopy to monitor cerebral and renal oxygen saturation during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for paediatric congenital heart disease: study protocol for a prospective observational cohort trial.

BACKGROUND: Current indicators for monitoring intraoperative organ function remain predominantly indirect, delayed and non-specific, particularly in paediatric populations undergoing congenital heart surgery, where multifactorial influences further complicate functional assessments. Emerging evidence suggests that the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology to continuously monitor the regional oxygen saturation (rSO₂) of intraoperative organs can predict the postoperative organ functional status. This study aims to investigate the associations between intraoperative cerebral/renal

Challenges in diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in pediatric practice: A regional and global perspective.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood, yet its diagnosis remains complex and fraught with challenges. Pediatricians, often the first point of contact for concerned families, play a pivotal role in the diagnostic process. However, they face numerous obstacles that can hinder accurate and timely diagnosis, particularly in resource-limited or culturally diverse settings such as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Arabian Gulf regions. This narrative review explores the key challenges pediatricians face in diagno

Diagnostic heterogeneity in scrub typhus serology: A scoping review of IFA thresholds and regional standardisation needs (2005-2024).

BACKGROUND: The indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) remains the most widely used reference method for diagnosing scrub typhus. However, inconsistent cut-off thresholds and strain selections across studies hinder standardisation and complicate cross-regional comparisons. This scoping review examines diagnostic heterogeneity in IFA-based scrub typhus serology and assesses the need for region-specific standardisation. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of peer-reviewed literature published between January 2005 and May 2024 across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies w

'The burden is very much on yourself': A qualitative study to understand the illness and treatment burden of hearing loss across the life course.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a chronic health condition that rises sharply with age. The way people respond to and cope with health conditions is influenced by their capacity to perform illness and treatment-related work. The aim was to explore the cumulative burdens of living with hearing loss and the resources mobilised to ease the burdens. METHODS: A qualitative design was used with semi-structured interviews (online or in-person) with participants recruited through audiology services and nonclinical services, such as lip-reading classes. Forty-six participants with hearing loss aged betw

Psychosocial and emotional well-being of Syrian refugee children and adolescents in Jordan: In-camp versus out-of-camp comparative analysis.

There is a notable gap in understanding how different living arrangements influence the psychosocial and emotional well-being of Syrian refugee children and adolescents. Moreover, limited literature exists on the comparison between in-camp and out-of-camp living situations. The aim of this study was to compare the psychosocial and emotional status between camp and non-camp Syrian refugee children and adolescents living in Jordan. A nationwide school survey was conducted in Jordan from December 2022 to April 2023 and targeted children (8-11 years) and adolescents (12-18 years), encompassing Jor

Hi-fun among men who have sex with men in Bangkok: A scoping study exploring key informants' perspectives on hi-fun contexts, harms and support strategies.

The use of specific drugs (e.g. methamphetamine, GHB/GBL and other stimulants) to enhance sex among men who have sex with men (MSM), is the focus of global public health concern because of links to social harms, poor mental and sexual health. Often called 'chemsex' in Western settings or 'hi-fun' in Southeast Asia, this type of sexualised drug use is increasingly visible in Thailand where the unique sociocultural and legislative environments shape sexual cultures and harms. This study aimed to develop an understanding of key informants' perspectives on hi-fun contexts, harms and current respon

Home alone: A population neuroscience investigation of brain morphology substrates.

As a social species, ready exchange with peers is a pivotal asset - our "social capital". Yet, single-person households have come to pervade metropolitan cities worldwide, with unknown consequences in the long run. Here, we systematically explore the morphological manifestations associated with singular living in ∼40,000 UK Biobank participants. The uncovered population-level signature spotlights the highly associative default mode network, in addition to findings such as in the amygdala central, cortical and corticoamygdaloid nuclei groups, as well as the hippocampal fimbria and dentate gyrus
