A method is proposed for identifying the head-neck complex (HNC) in the seated human body when it is exposed to the trunk horizontal (fore-and-aft) vibration. It is assumed that the HNC only has the anteroposterior (flexion/extension) motion in the sagittal plane. An electrohydraulic vibrator is used as a source of vibration. To generate the trunk horizontal vibration, the trunk of the seated subject is fixed to the seatback. The subjects are exposed to the random vibration at a magnitude of 1.60 ms(-2) rms (root-mean-square) for 50 s. The coherence and frequency response function are then obt

The segmental and laminar origin of propriospinal antinociceptive systems in the cat spinal cord and the modes to activate them are characterized. The experiments were performed on pentobarbital-anesthetized cats with a high cervical spinalization. Recordings were made from single lumbar spinal dorsal horn neurons responding to noxious radiant skin heating and to innocuous mechanical skin stimuli. The segmental and laminar origin of heterosegmental, propriospinal neurons modulating background activity and nociceptive responses were identified and the conditions to activate them were characteri

Avian respiratory pacemaker activity is dependent on some form of peripheral input but it may be inhibited by both central and peripheral stimulation. At present the results of central nervous stimulation are difficult to interpret but, aside from cortical influences, diving apnea appears to be maintained, in the face of increasing chemoreceptor input, by noxious stimulation of the upper respiratory tract and depression of the output of medullary respiratory neurons by advancing hypercapnia. If this is so, an obvious problem for future research is what initiates the prompt onset of hyperpnea w

Periodontal nerves, comprising sensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic fibers, are essential components of the periodontium. Beyond their classic sensory and proprioceptive functions, these neural networks actively modulate periodontal immune responses, bone remodeling, and tissue regeneration. They orchestrate tissue homeostasis by releasing specific neuropeptides, neurotransmitters, and neurotrophic factors. The progression of periodontitis is intimately linked to neural dysregulation, where proinflammatory mediators (e.g., excessive substance P and sympathetic catecholamines) overpower pr

Background: Falls in older adults are a major public health and rehabilitation concern and may reflect interacting chronic disease-related mechanisms rather than diagnostic labels alone. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension (HTN), and osteoarthritis (OA) are common in later life and may influence fall vulnerability through sensory, vascular, musculoskeletal, cognitive, medication-related, and functional pathways. This scoping review aimed to map mechanism-oriented evidence linking T2DM, HTN, and OA to falls and fall-related outcomes in older adults. Methods: A scoping review was condu

Background/Objectives: Egocentric and allocentric spatial transformations are central to spatial cognition, yet it is unknown whether they rely on the same neural mechanisms. The goal of this study was to examine whether egocentric transformations engage the neural processes associated with mental rotation in visual-spatial working memory. Methods: High-density EEG was recorded while participants performed two matched pointing-direction tasks, in which they indicated the direction toward a target location, while instructed to use either allocentric array rotation or egocentric perspective-taki

Aerobic exercise programs with proprioceptive sensory feedback elements such as split-belt treadmill training, perturbation treadmill training, and dynamic cycling improve function in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, these tools are expensive and not highly accessible. Speed-variable (SV) treadmill training utilizes small-amplitude treadmill belt speed fluctuations every 10-60 s, emulating aforementioned paradigms in a more-accessible design targeted toward home or gym settings. Fourteen PwPD (67.6 ± 6.5 years, 6 female) completed one 30-min session of SV training and one 30-mi

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old, male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented with a 1-month history of non-specific pain and inappetence, left-sided Horner syndrome, pelvic limb proprioceptive ataxia, upper motor neuron paraparesis and a plantigrade stance. Advanced imaging revealed a heterogeneous contrast-enhancing extradural mass dorsal to the T1-T2 intervertebral disc space, causing severe left-sided spinal cord compression. Medical image processing software was used to generate a patient-specific three-dimensional spine model based on MRI and CT data. A biomechanical three-dimensional-print

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise a heterogeneous group of pain and dysfunction conditions involving the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles, and related structures. Although occlusal interference has long been discussed in relation to TMD, current evidence does not support an occlusion-centered etiological model for most patients. Within the contemporary biopsychosocial framework embodied by the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD), occlusal interference is better regarded as one of several potential peripheral biomechanical inputs that may interact w

Hyperreflexia is a consequence of spinal cord injury (SCI) and motor system lesions in the brain. Two major mechanisms underpinning hyperreflexia have been reported: proprioceptive afferent (PA) circuit changes produced by 1 A fiber sprouting, which could enhance reflex signaling, together with reduced GABAergic inhibitory presynaptic regulation (GABApre); and increased intrinsic motor neuron excitability, for example, produced by reduced motor neuron membrane-bound potassium-chloride co-transporter2 (KCC2). Here we examine how selective unilateral CST injury in the medullary pyramid (PTX), wh

Shoulder disorders, including rotator cuff-related pain, adhesive capsulitis, impingement, glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA), acromioclavicular (AC) pathology, instability, and biceps/superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesions, are prevalent causes of pain, disability, and healthcare utilization. Contemporary care emphasizes non-operative strategies as first-line management, with surgery reserved for refractory symptoms or specific structural indications. The researcher conducted a systematized narrative review of adult non-operative management for common shoulder pathologies. Targe

While healthy individuals have redundant degrees of freedom of the joints, they coordinate their multi-joint movements such that the redundancy is effectively reduced. Achieving high inter-joint coordination may be difficult for upper limb prosthesis users due to the lack of proprioceptive feedback and limited motion of the terminal device. This study compared inter-joint coordination between prosthesis users and individuals without limb loss during different upper limb activities of daily living (ADLs). Nine unilateral prosthesis users (five males) and nine age- and sex-matched controls witho

BACKGROUND: Migraine patients may present with both cervical and balance dysfunctions. The neck plays an important role in balance by providing substantial proprioceptive input, which is integrated in the central nervous system and influences the balance control systems. Whether balance and neck dysfunctions are associated in patients with migraine is still to be explored.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between the sensory organization test of balance with neck pain features, cervical strength, endurance, and range of motion in patients with migraine.
METHODS: Sixty-f
