Nasal dermoplasty for Japanese hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

OBJECTIVE: While generally considered an effective treatment for moderate to severe epistaxis in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), nasal dermoplasty (ND) has not been well established in Japan. This prompted the present Japanese assessment of clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction following this procedure. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of clinical records of 15 patients with HHT undergoing ND between August 1991 and May 2004 and survey of these patients as to postsurgical conditions. Main outcome measures were skin graft "take" frequency after surgery (all patients), reported

Integrated Microfluidic Chip Enabling Preparation and Immobilization of Cell-Laden Microspheres, and Microsphere-Based Cell Culture and Analysis.

Microfluidics-based preparation methods for cell-laden hydrogel microspheres are well-suited for large-scale comparative analysis of single or few cells. However, in existing studies, the preparation of cell-laden hydrogel microspheres and the cell culture process are typically separated, requiring the fabricated microspheres to be eluted and transferred from the preparation device to cell culture dishes or plates for cultivation. This transfer process can easily compromise sterility, while conventional cell culture methods consume more reagents and cause microsphere stacking, hindering single

Environmental Preconditioning Shapes the Expression and Post-Formulation Stability of Plant Growth-Promoting Traits in Native Actinobacteria.

The functional expression of plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits in soil actinobacteria is conditioned by abiotic factors, yet the combined effects of pH and temperature on their metabolic profiles and the stability of these profiles after encapsulated formulation and post-processing stress remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological plasticity of native actinobacteria and the expression of plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits under different pH and temperature conditions, as well as their stability after encapsulation, dehydration, and exposure to UV irr

Data-Driven Development of Biomedical Hydrogels for Controlled Drug Delivery: Clinical Applications and Emerging Machine-Learning Approaches.

Hydrogels are hydrated three-dimensional polymeric networks with biomedical potential because they can encapsulate therapeutic agents and provide localised, sustained, or stimulus-responsive drug delivery. Their performance is determined by interacting variables, including polymer composition, synthesis route, crosslinking chemistry, drug loading, swelling, degradation, and the biological microenvironment. This multidimensional design space often makes hydrogel development slow and dependent on trial-and-error experimentation. This review examines the data-driven development of biomedical hydr

High-throughput HPAEC-PAD for the analysis of neutral sugars and uronic acids in biomass hydrolysates.

Lignocellulosic and marine biomasses are valuable renewable sources of cellulose and alginate polysaccharides. Accurate quantification of the neutral sugars and uronic acids content in complex biomass hydrolysates is essential for effective characterization and use. High-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) provides sensitive, derivatization-free analysis with good isomer separation. However, traditional methods often involve lengthy gradients and demanding column maintenance, which limit throughput. In this study, we introduce and validate a

Enhancing ocean alkalinity and CO2 sequestration via microalgae-driven carbonate precipitation and biomimetic catalysis.

Microalgae-induced carbonate precipitation (MAICP) offers a promising approach for CO2 capture and ocean alkalinity enhancement, but its efficiency in seawater is limited by the slow hydration of CO2, resulting low production of bicarbonate (HCO3-), and reduces algal growth and carbonate (CaCO3) mineralization. In this study, a bio-hybrid biomimetic-MAICP system was developed that integrates the microalga Chlorella vulgaris with carbonic anhydrase-functionalized Zn-based metal-organic framework-5 (CA@fZnMOF-5), encapsulated in alginate beads, to accelerate CO2 hydration and MAICP mineralizatio

Multifunctional Hydrogel with Phytochemicals and Silver Nanoparticles for Promoting Scar-Free Wound Healing.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Delayed wound healing, along with excessive scar formation, is the major clinical drawback due to the presence of stubborn bacteria, oxidative stress, prolonged inflammation, and irregular tissue regeneration. Utilizing nanomaterial-based wound dressings offers significant advancements and minimal cytotoxicity, but also presents issues such as poor biocompatibility, low solubility, and reduced permeability. These factors limit the effectiveness of nanomaterial-based wound dressings in promoting complete tissue regeneration. To overcome these limitations, plant-derived bi

Unraveling the potential and challenges of photosynthetic microalgae for oxygenating engineered tissues.

Hypoxia remains a major barrier to the viability and function of engineered large tissue constructs. Conventional strategies such as oxygen-releasing biomaterials and pre-vascularization have shown partial success, often constrained by scalability and long-term sustainability. Co-culturing photosynthetic microalgae and animal cells offers an alternative by establishing living oxygen factories that locally convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and thus mitigate hypoxia. Despite the promise of this symbiotic approach, inherent challenges remain, including physiological incompatibilities between mic

A comparative zebrafish atlas of metallic toxicity identifies vanadium as a multi-target neurobehavioral toxicant and reveals effective chelation protection.

Environmental contamination by metallic elements represents an emerging threat to neurobehavioral health. Rather than evaluating individual metals independently, we established a standardized high-throughput behavioral phenomics platform in adult zebrafish that integrates 3D locomotion tracking with mirror-biting (aggression) and predator-avoidance (fear) assays under identical exposure conditions, enabling systematic behavioral toxicity profiling and direct cross-metal prioritization across 37 metallic elements. Multivariate behavioral fingerprinting showed that elements such as HMs induced m

Synergistic impact of 3D multicellular architecture and capillary-like flow on intestinal drug permeability.

Understanding intestinal drug permeability requires in vitro systems capable of reproducing both the structural complexity and the dynamic fluidic environment of the human gut. Traditional two‑dimensional (2D) models, although widely used in Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion (ADME) screening, offer limited physiological relevance and often fail to predict in vivo absorption. Three‑dimensional (3D) models and microfluidic technologies have emerged as promising tools to address these limitations by incorporating multiple cell types, extracellular matrix components, and biomechan

Extraction and purification and microcapsulation of sea buckthorn seed proanthocyanidins using deep eutectic solvent-assisted extraction.

This study aimed to develop a green deep eutectic solvents (DES) extraction strategy to recover proanthocyanidins (PAs) from sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) seeds, a followed by composite biopolymer microencapsulation to overcome the poor stability of PAs. Five choline chloride-based DES systems were screened, and the choline chloride/1,4-butanediol binary DES containing 50% (v/v) water exhibited the highest extraction efficiency. Single-factor experiments combined with Box-Behnken response surface methodology optimized the extraction parameters: solid-to-liquid ratio of 41:1 mg/mL, extra

Dietary supplementation with phlorotannin-lowered Eisenia nipponica increases caecal antioxidant activity and promotes Akkermansia in mice.

BACKGROUND: Eisenia nipponica (EN), a traditional Japanese edible brown alga, is rich in storage polysaccharides (laminaran) and polyphenols (phlorotannins) during summer. Laminaran is a water-soluble dietary fibre readily fermented in the gut, whereas the phlorotannins in EN exhibit potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: To distinguish the effects of algal fibre from those of soluble polyphenols, we prepared a phlorotannin-lowered EN via 70% ethanol washing (WEN). Either EN or WEN was added at 5% (w/w) to a high-sucrose, low-fiber (NF) diet and adm

Perineural Scar Prevention in Brachial Plexus Decompression Surgery: Clinical Outcomes Using a Bioresorbable Hydrogel Implant.

BACKGROUND: Perineural scarring after peripheral nerve surgery is a known cause of persistent pain and reoperation. Brachial plexus decompression for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (nTOS) carries a particularly high risk given the extent of dissection, scalenectomy, and the constant motion of the cervicothoracic region. Recurrence rates after complete decompression range from 7% to 30%. VersaWrap (Alafair Biosciences) is a bioresorbable hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel that physically blocks fibroblast access while allowing nutrient diffusion to the nerve. Its use has not previously been

Stimuli-responsive 4D-bioprinted constructs for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration: Shape-morphing mechanisms, cell-laden bioink engineering, and preclinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal disorders impose a substantial global disability burden. Conventional 3D bioprinting cannot replicate the dynamic, anisotropic architecture of bone, cartilage, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle. Four-dimensional (4D) bioprinting addresses this by integrating stimuli-responsive materials into constructs, enabling programmed shape transformation and adaptive behavior following implantation. METHODS: This narrative review examines primary experimental research on stimuli-responsive 4D-bioprinted musculoskeletal constructs, drawing on in vitro, in vivo, and combine
