BART Streams: Real-Time Reconstruction Using a Modular Framework for Pipeline Processing.

PURPOSE: To create modular solutions for interactive real-time MRI using reconstruction algorithms implemented in BART. METHODS: A new protocol for streaming of multidimensional arrays is presented and integrated into BART. The new functionality is demonstrated using examples for cardiac interactive real-time MRI based on radial FLASH, where iterative reconstruction is combined with advanced features such as dynamic coil compression and gradient-delay correction. We analyze the latency of the reconstruction and measure end-to-end latency of the full imaging process. RESULTS: Reconstruction p

A closed-loop anesthetic delivery system for real-time control of burst suppression.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in using closed-loop anesthetic delivery (CLAD) systems to automate control of brain states (sedation, unconsciousness and antinociception) in patients receiving anesthesia care. The accuracy and reliability of these systems can be improved by using as control signals electroencephalogram (EEG) markers for which the neurophysiological links to the anesthetic-induced brain states are well established. Burst suppression, in which bursts of electrical activity alternate with periods of quiescence or suppression, is a well-known, readily discernible EEG marker

Wooden Foreign Body in the Renal Pelvis.

Migration of foreign bodies into the renal collecting system is very rare and usually concerns iatrogenically implanted objects. Migration of a foreign body from the gastrointestinal tract to the kidneys is even more rare. We present a case of migration of a wooden toothpick from the duodenum into the pelvis of the right kidney. The patient was not aware that he swallowed a toothpick; the foreign body resulted in hematuria and flank pain. The toothpick was missed during the initial computed tomography urography. Correct diagnosis was revealed by follow-up computed tomography. The toothpick was

Anomalous origin of the entire coronary system by three separate ostia within the right coronary sinus--a rarely observed coronary anomaly.

The anomalous origin of the entire coronary system by three separate ostia within the right coronary sinus is a very rare anomaly with only 34 cases reported in the literature to date. A patient with this rare anomaly who developed coronary artery disease, requiring revascularization, is presented. His coronary computed tomography angiography and coronary angiographic findings are discussed. The present case demonstrates the complimentary roles of coronary computed tomography angiography and conventional cardiac catheterization in managing a patient with anomalous coronary arteries and coronar

Intracranial tuberculoma mimicking metastasis from renal tumor--case report.

A 63-year-old female presented with intracranial tuberculoma manifesting as severe headache. Systemic examination found a mass in the left kidney. The histological diagnosis was tuberculoma after kidney biopsy. Cranial computed tomography found two lesions, in the right frontal and occipital lobes. The intracranial lesions were considered to be tuberculomas. Tuberculosis chemotherapy was continued for 15 months. Her neurological deficit was resolved. Cranial computed tomography showed the lesion in the frontal lobe had disappeared and the lesion in the occipital lobe was reduced in size.

Diagnostic testing in movement disorders.

The diagnosis of movement disorders is essentially clinical. Work-up depends on patient age, part of the body affected, drug response, and presence of other systemic or neurologic symptoms and signs. Typical Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and tics need only minimal work-up if any. Brain magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography, positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography, and DNA studies are promising diagnostic tools. Exclusion of Wilson's disease and neuroacanthocytosis is emphasized in children and young adults with movement disorders.

Large-scale first-principles electronic structure methods.

First-principles electronic structure methods provide a quantum-mechanically grounded route to describing microscopic matter, but their application to structurally complex and large-scale systems is constrained by global operations whose cost usually scales cubically or worse. Linear-scaling electronic-structure methods seek to overcome this bottleneck by exploiting locality, or nearsightedness, in electronic matter. Their practical performance, however, is not determined by formal scaling alone. It depends on how local representations are reconciled with global fermionic constraints, includin

Energy loss and coronary flow simulation following hybrid stage I palliation: a hypoplastic left heart computational fluid dynamic model.

OBJECTIVES: The theoretical differences in energy losses as well as coronary flow with different band sizes for branch pulmonary arteries (PA) in hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) remain unknown. Our objective was to develop a computational fluid dynamic model (CFD) to determine the energy losses and pulmonary-to-systemic flow rates. This study was done for three different PA band sizes. METHODS: Three-dimensional computer models of the hybrid procedure were constructed using the standard commercial CFD softwares Fluent and Gambit. The computer models were controlled for bilateral PA red

A simulated reality scenario compared with the computerized Wisconsin card sorting test: an analysis of preliminary results.

Neuropsychologists and other clinicians often comment on the minimal relationship that frequently exists between formal assessments of executive functions, analysis of findings, recommendations, and the person's real-life functioning. The authors' believe that current assessments of executive functions do not transfer easily to real-world behavior. There are limitations in the current examinations and in the settings in which they are given. The tests are artificial and the test settings lack the usual stresses, distractions, and multiple demands common to real life. The interactions are unlik

Accelerating phase diagram construction through activity coefficient prediction.

Obtaining phase diagrams from molecular simulations remains computationally demanding due to the need for extensive sampling of coexistence conditions and large system sizes. This study demonstrates a novel methodology for efficiently predicting phase behavior in Lennard-Jones mixtures by leveraging machine learning. Here, we train a Gaussian process (GP) model on Kirkwood-Buff Integrals (KBIs) to establish a predictive link between KBIs and activity coefficients-a key thermodynamic quantity encoding deviations from ideality. Through the incorporation of KBI trends, the GP model leads to the p

A physico-mechanical model of postnatal craniofacial growth in human.

Our fundamental understanding of the physico-mechanical forces that drive the size and shape changes of the cranium during ontogeny are limited. Biomechanical models based on finite element method present a huge opportunity to address this critical gap in our knowledge. Here, we describe a validated computational framework to predict normal craniofacial growth. Our results demonstrated that this approach is capable of predicting the growth of calvaria, face, and skull base. We highlighted the crucial role of skull base in antero-posterior growth of the face and also demonstrated the contributi

A Multiconfigurational Wave Function Implementation of the Frenkel Exciton Model for Molecular Aggregates.

We present an implementation of the Frenkel exciton model into the OpenMolcas program package enabling calculations of collective electronic excited states of molecular aggregates based on a multiconfigurational wave function description of the individual monomers. The computational protocol avoids using diabatization schemes and, thus, supermolecule calculations. Additionally, the use of the Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals entering pair interactions enhances the efficiency of the computational scheme. The application of the method is exemplified for two test systems, that

An efficient algorithm for Cholesky decomposition of electron repulsion integrals.

Approximating the electron repulsion integrals using inner projections is a well-established approach to reduce the computational demands of electronic structure calculations. Here, we present a two-step Cholesky decomposition algorithm where only the elements of the Cholesky basis (the pivots) are determined in the pivoting procedure. This allows for improved screening, significantly reducing memory usage and computational cost. After the pivots have been determined, the Cholesky vectors are constructed using the inner projection formulation. We also propose a partitioned decomposition approa

A model for clubfoot based on micro-CT data.

The pathological anatomy of idiopathic clubfoot has been investigated for more than 180 years using anatomy, computed tomography (CT), histology and microscopy. Seven idiopathic clubfeet and two normal feet of aborted fetuses were dissected in the present study, with special emphasis on the shape of the cartilage and bones. A three-dimensional (3D) micro-CT system, which generates a series of X-ray attenuation measurements, was used to produce computed reconstructed 3D data sets of each of the separated bones. Based on the micro-CT data scans a high-definition 3D colour printing system was use

Nested Fluid-Structure Interaction Predictive Modeling of Fetal Brain Stress During Maternal Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical trauma during pregnancy from motor vehicle accidents, falls, and maternal seizures poses significant risks to fetal development. The fetus is protected by multiple hierarchical layers including the uterine wall, amniotic fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain. Despite the clinical significance of maternal trauma occurring in approximately six to eight percent of pregnancies, previous computational studies have focused primarily on amniotic fluid protection while treating the fetus as a homogeneous structure, without examining the nested protective architect

Use of Electronic Health Records to Characterize Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension in Two Large Health System Networks.

BACKGROUND: Improving hypertension control is a public health priority. However, consistent identification of uncontrolled hypertension using computable definitions in electronic health records (EHR) across health systems remains uncertain. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we applied two computable definitions to the EHR data to identify patients with controlled and uncontrolled hypertension and to evaluate differences in characteristics, treatment, and clinical outcomes between these patient populations. We included adult patients (≥ 18 years) with hypertension receiving ambulato
