A case of orthodontic splint ingestion misclassified as a sharp/pointed foreign body in a child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is common, particularly among children. While most FBs pass through the gastrointestinal tract without complications, some cases can lead to morbidity or even mortality. Management strategies depend on the size, sharpness, toxicity, and location of the FB. Plain radiographs are essential for diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up, especially for radiopaque FBs. Ingestion of dental-related FBs is rare, with reported cases involving orthodontic wires, braces, retainers, and other dental materials. Composite resin-wire splints are commonly used in orth

Retained ureteral stents, an avoidable source of morbidity: 10 years´ experience from a single tertiary care centre.

INTRODUCTION: ureteral stents are used in managing various urological conditions. When these stents are left indwelling for a prolonged time, it results in complications like stent migration, fragmentation, and encrustation. The aim of this retrospective observational study is to analyse the incidence, risk factors, and morbidity associated with retained ureteral stents. METHODS: the retained/forgotten ureteral stents were defined as the stents with an indwelling period of more than six months. The records of all such patients from January 2010 to January 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. T

Biomechanical Principles of Breast Implants and Current State of Research in Soft Tissue Engineering for Cosmetic Breast Augmentation.

Currently there are limited implant-based options for cosmetic breast augmentation, and problems associated with those have been increasingly appreciated, most commonly capsular contracture, which occurs due to a chronic foreign body reaction against non-degradable implant materials such as silicone and polyurethane leading to scar tissue formation, pain, and deformity. The underlying biomechanical concepts with implants create a reciprocal stress-strain relationship with local tissue, whilst acting as a deforming force. This means that with time, as the implant continues to have an effect on

Management of delayed intrathoracic esophageal perforation with modified intraluminal esophageal stent.

In this article, we reviewed our experience of treatment of the delayed intrathoracic nonmalignant esophageal perforation employing modified intraluminal esophageal stent. Between February 1990 and August 2006, eight patients were included in this study. Five patients experienced sepsis. The interval time between perforation and stent placement ranged from 36 h to 27 days (average, 8.6 days). Esophageal stenting and throracotomy for foreign body removal were performed in four patients. The remaining four patients underwent stent placement and thoracostomy. Nutrition was initiated through gastr

Successful Endoscopic Management of Bouveret Syndrome by Transpyloric Stone Relocation and Intragastric Mechanical Lithotripsy.

Background: Bouveret syndrome is a rare form of gallstone ileus in which a gallstone migrates through a bilioenteric fistula and impacts at the gastric outlet or proximal duodenum. It affects predominantly frail elderly women, in whom an endoscopy-first strategy is desirable; however, complete endoscopic clearance is achieved in fewer than half of cases and becomes markedly less likely as stone size increases, meaning that large stones often prompt surgery. Case Presentation: A 95-year-old woman presented with four days of vomiting and obstipation. Computed tomography demonstrated gastric outl

pH-responsive printable conductive hydrogels loaded with ApoVs promote diabetic wound repair through oxidative stress scavenging and macrophage reprogramming.

Compared with normal wounds, chronic diabetic wounds involve a more complex pathological microenvironment. Cellular dysfunction, microcirculatory disorders, and high levels of oxidative stress often lead to the progression of diabetic wounds to chronic, refractory ulcers. The management of chronic diabetic wound healing remains a clinical priority and a challenging problem. Traditional wound dressings provide a physical barrier to isolate the wound from foreign substances while creating gaps that block endogenous electrical conduction. We incorporated conductive materials-PEDOT:PSS, polypyrrol

Tracheobronchial foreign bodies in cats: a retrospective study of 12 cases.

Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate age, sex, breed, clinical signs, time between onset of signs and presentation, diagnostic procedures, method of extraction, location and nature of foreign bodies (FBs) in confirmed cases of tracheobronchial FBs in cats. We hypothesised that bronchoscopy was effective in extracting tracheobronchial FBs in cats. Methods A retrospective study was performed using clinical reports from three private practices in France between May 2009 and November 2014. Cats were included if an intraluminal tracheobronchial FB had been identified and extracted (eithe

Vascularization Potential of Electrospun Poly(L-Lactide-co-Caprolactone) Scaffold: The Impact for Tissue Engineering.

BACKGROUND Electrospun nanofibers have widespread putative applications in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. When compared to naturally occurring collagen matrices, electrospun nanofiber scaffolds have two distinct advantages: they do not induce a foreign body reaction and they are not at risk for biological contamination. However, the exact substrate, structure, and production methods have yet to be defined. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the current study, tubular-shaped poly(L-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) constructs produced using electrospinning technology were evaluat

Bouveret's syndrome complicated by a distal gallstone ileus.

AIM: Gastric outlet obstruction caused by duodenal impaction of a large gallstone migrated through a cholecystoduodenal fistula has been referred as Bouveret's syndrome. Endoscopic lithotomy is the first-step treatment, however, surgery is indicated in case of failure or complication during this procedure. METHODS: We report herein an 84-year-old woman presenting with features of gastric outlet obstruction due to impacted gallstone. She underwent an endoscopic retrieval which was unsuccessful and was further complicated by distal gallstone ileus. Physical examination was irrelevant. RESULTS:

Hypertension and acute rejection processes in allotransplanted kidneys.

Once increased fluid leakage from the vessels of an allotransplanted kidney starts to raise the renal extravascular pressure, certain haemodynamic consequences follow unless further leakage or a comparable rate of leakage is prevented and the most significant of these is renal afferent vasoconstriction. The changes within the allotransplanted kidney leading to the onset of vaso-constriction are described. The leakage of increased fluid through the renal microcirculation is immediate and is the first sign of the impact on an allotransplanted kidney of a foreign circulation. The increased leakag

Feasibility and safety of double-J ureteral stent with a timed-release extraction string in children.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional removal of double-J ureteral stent (DJUS) in children typically requires cystoscopy under general anesthesia, which entails perioperative risks and increased healthcare costs. The DJUS with a timed-release extraction string (DJUS-TRES) potentially overcomes these limitations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of DJUS-TRES in children. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively collected data on children undergoing urological surgeries with DJUS-TRES between September 2022 and May 2025, with subsequent retrospective analysis. Postoperatively, the absorbable sutu

Five-year outcomes for bell bottom, iliac branch endoprosthesis, and coil and cover approaches from the GREAT registry.

OBJECTIVE: There are a variety of methods used today to treat common iliac aneurysms with endovascular techniques. Of these approaches, little is known about whether a particular limb strategy influences endoleak, reintervention, or aneurysm regression rates. We present 5-year data comparing endoleak, stent graft migration, fracture, aneurysm sac dynamics, and aortic rupture rates among patients treated with bell bottom limbs (BB), iliac branch endoprosthesis (IBE), and coil and cover (CC) approaches from the Global Registry for Endovascular Aortic Treatment registry.
