Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) is defined by absence seizures in a normally developing child, with onset between 4 and 10 years of age.(1) Typical absence seizures consist of behavioral arrest with or without automatisms, usually last 30-60 seconds, and demonstrate a characteristic 3-Hz generalized spike-wave (GSW) pattern on EEG, often in response to hyperventilation.(2) Children may have hundreds of episodes daily, many of them subclinical, which can impair sustained attention and memory processing. There is a strong association between CAE and disorders of attention and executive function

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neuropsychological syndrome in which a sudden, temporary loss of the capacity of creating new memories and a retrograde amnesia of variable intensity occur, whereas consciousness, personal identity and attention are preserved.
AIM: To review different clinical aspects about TGA.
DEVELOPMENT: Accordingly, the following topics will be reviewed: definition and diagnosis criteria, types of amnesias which should be ruled out and their peculiarities and differences with TGA, epidemiological data such as incidence, age, sex, educational level of the

Beriberi is a disease caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Peripheral and central nerve involvement causes psychosis and memory loss as well as cardiocirculatory effects. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman 8 weeks pregnant who came to the emergency department after bouts of nausea and vomiting over a period of 6 days, with intolerance of both solids and liquids. The initial diagnosis of gastroenteritis was later changed to hyperemesis gravidarum. Episodes of vomiting and nausea continued 48 hours after admission, accompanied by vertical nystagmus, ataxia, and diminished osteotend

Rett syndrome consists of a highly complex but consistent set of clinical signs and symptoms. Clinical characteristics consist of microcephaly, delayed psychomotor development, autistic behavior, stereotyped hand-washing, and seizures. Over a period of 14 years (1987-2000), 7 patients with Rett syndrome were evaluated at the Out Patient Unit, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. All seven patients were females aging 1 1/2 to 5 years old when diagnosis was established. All were appearently normal at birth and had developmental regression after a period of time. All of them d

A 55-year-old woman sustained an acute amnesia that lasted for 8 days. The results of a cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scan and an electroencephalogram were normal. A Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) test performed 6 days after the event showed global impairment in every domain, except for attention/concentration. A single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan taken 8 days after the event showed hypoperfusion in the left temporal and frontal areas. The results of a follow-up SPECT scan on the 40th day after the episode were normal. A second WMS-R test showed some improveme

Clinical, computed tomographic (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) correlations of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis with an atypical onset are presented in three children. In all three patients, the disease began similarly, with unilateral neurologic deficit followed by gnosis, praxis, and memory dysfunction corresponding to massive one-sided lesions. The first patient demonstrated right frontal-lobe syndrome and polymorphic extrapyramidal hyperkinesias; MRI showed a large high-signal lesion in the right frontal lobe, while CT was normal. The second patient displayed a disease onset

Ophthalmoplegic migraine is an uncommon disorder, usually starting in older childhood. Its physiopathology remains obscure and diagnosis is reliant on clinical grounds and exclusion of other disorders. We report four cases of childhood ophthalmoplegic migraine, one of them starting in infancy. Association with other types of migraine is common. Two of the three patients studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed enhancement and enlargement of the cisternal portion of the oculomotor nerve, which spontaneously resolved after 2 and 4 years, respectively. Persistence of clinical recurrence

The prevalence of depression in Parkinson's disease (PD) is estimated to be around 40% and generally takes the form of dysthymia. Although psychological factors probably contribute to depression, data point to a relation to structural and biochemical changes linked to PD. Thus, the onset of motor impairment is often preceded by a depressive episode, although there is no consistency between the seriousness of motor disability and depression. Furthermore, depression aggravates the memory and language impairments of PD and is thought to be a risk factor for developing dementia. Regional cerebral

Twenty consecutive patients with recurrent Tolosa-Hunt syndrome were studied. One had a parent who suffered from recurrent Tolosa-Hunt syndrome. Thirty-three percent of the patients had also recurrent periods of weeks to months of unilateral periorbital pain without ophthalmoplegia. One patient had cluster headache before the Tolosa-Hunt syndrome started. Some patients had involvement of cranial nerves outside the cavernous sinus region during Tolosa-Hunt syndrome and also between episodes. The same systemic symptoms, i.e. back pain, cold feet, arthralgia, gut problems, varices, vertigo, chron

A 64 year-old woman experienced, at 6 weeks' interval, two episodes of encephalitis with left hemiparesis, coma and signs of meningitis. Paraclinical examinations showed lymphocytic meningitis, right temporal hypodensity at CT and high titers for herpes simplex at blood serology. The spontaneous course was favourable with almost complete recovery. A third recurrence took place 2 months later with left hemiplegia, confusion and meningism. A tentative diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis was confirmed by major intrathecal synthesis of herpes virus specific antibodies and by highly suggestive

Four prolonged episodes of partial complex status epilepticus were observed in a teenaged girl. During each there was an "ictal" phase, in which her mental state frequently fluctuated between mildly clouded consciousness and almost total unresponsiveness; once, she was also blind during this phase of impaired consciousness. With therapy, the periods of unresponsiveness became less frequent and less prolonged until a second, "postictal," phase occurred when she was alert, but with profound retrograde and anterograde amnesia that gradually resolved in several weeks. The "ictal" EEG pattern alway

Retrieval practice enhances learning and is most effective when feedback is provided. Despite robust evidence that retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback benefit numerous clinical populations, these techniques have not been studied in autism. In two experiments, we measured retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback effects on associative memory in autistic and non-autistic adults residing in the United States. Participants attempted to memorize semantically unrelated word pairs, which were then reviewed during a practice phase consisting of retrieval practice with and without feed

This study examined the relationship between dependency themes in 140 inpatients' early childhood memories (EM) and social interactions involving dependent behavior. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the type of dependent EM predicted overt behavior above and beyond demographic and diagnostic categories. Patients expressing clinging dependent themes in their narratives had greater involvement in social activities in the therapeutic community program and with nurses, whereas patients expressing counterdependent themes engaged in more hostile interactions with nursing staff members,

BACKGROUND: Identifying specific causes of intraoperative hypotension (IOH) is a challenge in clinical practice. Improving the causal treatment of hypotension requires a more detailed understanding of the underlying hemodynamic alterations during hypotension. This study aims to identify distinct hemodynamic endotypes of IOH by applying a deep learning model to high-resolution intraoperative hemodynamic data.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis for surgical patients who had undergone continuous intraoperative monitoring of systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI), stroke volume ind

BACKGROUND: Abnormal white matter integrity has been reported among first episode schizophrenia patients. However, findings on whether it can be reversed by short-term antipsychotic medications are inconsistent.
METHOD: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was obtained from 55 drug-naive first episode schizophrenia patients and 61 healthy controls, and was repeated among 25 patients and 31 controls after 8 weeks during which patients were medicated with antipsychotics. White matter integrity is measured using fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffu

INTRODUCTION: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a significant symptom in Parkinson's Disease (PD) that has been associated with attentional set shifting deficits, suggesting an underlying frontostriatal neurobiology. Whilst to date Start Hesitation (SH) has been regarded as a subtype of FOG, whether it shares the same underlying neural correlates remains unknown. The specific correlation of SH with other clinical features might help to elucidate its neurobiological underpinnings, which could potentially offer novel treatment strategies.
METHODS: In this study, 72 PD patients underwent a previously va

The molecular factors involved in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) remain poorly understood. One approach to examine the molecular basis of MDD is co-expression network analysis, which facilitates the examination of complex interactions between expression levels of individual genes and how they influence biological pathways affected in MDD. Here, we applied an unsupervised gene-network based approach to a prospective experimental design using microarray genome-wide gene expression from the peripheral whole blood of older adults. We utilised the Sydney Memory and Ageing St
