How to distinguish Guillain-Barré syndrome from nitrous oxide-induced neuropathy: A 2-year, multicentric, retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2 O) has dramatically increased in recent years, resulting in numerous cases of acute sensorimotor tetraparesis secondary to nitrous oxide-induced neuropathy (N2 On). Challenging clinical features can mimic Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), the main differential diagnosis upon admission. The most sensitive biomarkers for distinguishing between these two conditions remain to be determined. METHODS: Fifty-eight N2 On patients from three referral centers were retrospectively included over a 2-year period and compared to GBS patients hospitalized durin

Scope of an Integrative Neurophysiotherapy Approach in Achieving Gross Motor Milestones in a Child with Meningitis: A Case Report.

Meningitis caused by bacteria, which is an inflammation of the meninges affecting the pia, arachnoid, and subarachnoid space, is still one of the leading causes of death and morbidity in infants and young children. Neisseria meningitidis, group B streptococcus (GBS), Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib), Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae have been found to be the most frequent causative agents. Infants and children can have modest, fluctuating, non-specific, or even absent clinical signs of bacterial meningitis. They may include bulging fontanelles, vomiting, diarrhea, respir

Protocol for a prospective multicenter longitudinal randomized controlled trial (CALIN) of sensory-tonic stimulation to foster parent child interactions and social cognition in very premature infants.

INTRODUCTION: Premature birth is associated with long-term somatic and neurological disorders, including cognitive, social and behavioral impairments. Moreover, the mothers of infants born preterm exhibit a higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms after birth. Early rehabilitation, developmental care, and parenting support have already been shown to have a positive impact on neurological outcome. However, no randomized controlled study has so far assessed the effects on parenting and long-term neurological outcomes of proprioceptive stimulation to trigger positive brain plasticity

Neuroplasticity of spinal cord injury and repair.

The sudden loss of movement after spinal cord injury (SCI) is life-changing and is a major impetus to study spinal cord motor system plasticity and devise novel repair strategies. This review focuses on the motor cortex and the corticospinal tract, which are key to producing voluntary movements. The motor cortex projects directly to the spinal cord, via the corticospinal tract, and indirectly, via relays in the brain stem. With loss of the corticospinal tract after SCI, the indirect paths may bypass the injury and play an important role in voluntary control. In health and after injury, the spi

Implementation of the Gamut of Physiotherapy Maneuvers in Restoration and Normalization of Functional Potencies in a Patient With a Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Case Report.

A stroke is a medical emergency characterized by a sudden onset of focal neurological deficits due to an interruption in the blood flow to the brain tissues, with signs and symptoms persisting for more than 24 hours. Motor, sensory, recognition, language, and perceptual deficiencies are typical signs of the disease, depending on the areas affected, the size of the injury, and the origin of the injury. Patients who have had a stroke frequently have problems like weakness, stiffness, and altered movement patterns in addition to poor balance and mobility issues. Numerous physiotherapeutic strateg

Small sensory spinal lesions that affect hand function in monkeys greatly alter primary afferent and motor neuron connections in the cord.

Small sensory spinal injuries induce plasticity across the neuraxis, but little is understood about their effect on segmental connections or motor neuron (MN) function. Here, we begin to address this at two levels. First, we compared afferent input distributions from the skin and muscles of the digits with corresponding MN pools to determine their spatial relationship, in both the normal state and 4-6 months after a unilateral dorsal root/dorsal column lesion (DRL/DCL), affecting digits 1-3. Second, we looked at specific changes to MN inputs and membrane properties that likely impact functiona

In chronic complete spinal cord injury supraspinal changes detected by quantitative MRI are confined to volume reduction in the caudal brainstem.

There is much controversy about the potential impact of spinal cord injury (SCI) on brain anatomy and function, which is mirrored in the substantial divergence of findings between animal models and human imaging studies. Given recent advances in quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we sought to tackle the unresolved question about the link between the presumed injury associated volume differences and underlying brain tissue property changes in a cohort of chronic complete SCI patients. Using the established computational anatomy methods of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and voxel-based

Injury prevention of hamstring injuries through exercise interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring injuries are the most prevalent time-loss injuries in sport, mainly in those modalities characterized by high-intensity and short-term actions, especially accelerations and decelerations during high-speed running. Expanding the knowledge about this type of injury and its preventive programs could be a key strategy to reduce the hamstring injury incidence. Thus, this review aimed to study the effectiveness of different preventive programs based on exercise interventions on reducing the hamstring injury incidence in athletes. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: An umbrella review was

Innervation of the hip joint capsular complex: A systematic review of histological and immunohistochemical studies and their clinical implications for contemporary treatment strategies in total hip arthroplasty.

The hip joint capsule contributes to the stability of the hip joint and lower extremity, yet this structure is incised and often removed during total hip arthroplasty (THA). Increasing incidence of osteoarthritis is accompanied by a dramatic rise in THAs over the last few decades. Consequently, to improve this treatment, THA with capsular repair has evolved. This partial restoration of physiological hip stability has resulted in a substantial reduction in post-operative dislocation rates compared to conventional THA without capsular repair. A further reason for the success of this procedure is

Cardiac afferent activity modulates early neural signature of error detection during skilled performance.

Behavioral adaptations during performance rely on predicting and evaluating the consequences of our actions through action monitoring. Previous studies revealed that proprioceptive and exteroceptive signals contribute to error-monitoring processes, which are implemented in the posterior medial frontal cortex. Interestingly, errors also trigger changes in autonomic nervous system activity such as pupil dilation or heartbeat deceleration. Yet, the contribution of implicit interoceptive signals of bodily states to error-monitoring during ongoing performance has been overlooked. This study investi

Short-Foot Exercise Promotes Quantitative Somatosensory Function in Ankle Instability: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND Ankle sprain reduces capacity for neurosensory information processing, and these patients commonly progress to chronic ankle instability (CAI). To address this problem, the short-foot exercise (SFE) may be used. However, there has been no previous research on the neurosensory impact of SFE. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess improvement of quantitative neurosensory indicators after SFE and to determine the effect of proprioceptive sensory exercise (PSE) in patients with CAI. MATERIAL AND METHODS The present study included 30 adults (age range: 19-29 years; 50% female). S

Effects of football simulated fatigue on neuromuscular function and whole-body response to disturbances in balance.

The effect of football-specific fatigue on explosive neuromuscular performance and dynamic balance has received little attention in the literature despite the potential consequences for injury risk. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fatigue induced by simulated football match play on maximal and explosive knee flexor (KF) and knee extensor (KE) torque, and thus the maximal and explosive KF/KE ratio, as well as the effect of fatigue induced by simulated football match play on whole-body response to disturbances in balance. Patient Outcomes Utilizing the Mulligan Concept of Mobilization With Movement to Treat Intercollegiate Patients Diagnosed With Lateral Ankle Sprain: An a Priori Case Series.

CONTEXT: While the incidence and reinjury rates of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) continue to persist at high rates across many sporting activities, further exploration of assessment and treatment beyond the traditional ligamentous and strength/proprioceptive model is warranted. Further, assessing and treating both arthrokinematic and osteokinematic changes associated with LAS can provide insight into a more diverse approach to treating ankle pathology. OBJECTIVE: To examine the clinical use of the Mulligan Concept mobilization with movement (MWM) while treating patients diagnosed with an acute g
