The patella ligament insertion angle influences quadriceps usage during walking of anterior cruciate ligament deficient patients.

Following ACL injury a reduction in the peak knee flexion moment during walking (thought to be created by a decrease of quadriceps contraction) has been described as an adaptation to reduce anterior tibial translation (ATT) relative to the femur. However, the amount of ATT caused by quadriceps contraction is influenced by the patellar ligament insertion angle (PLIA). The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that quadriceps usage during walking correlates to individual anatomical variations in the extensor mechanism as defined by PLIA. PLIA and gait were measured for ACL-deficient k

Vitamin B12 Supports Skeletal Muscle Oxidative Phosphorylation Capacity in Male Mice.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 is a cofactor in folate-mediated 1-carbon metabolism, which generates nucleotides {thymidylate [deoxythymidine monophosphate (dTMP)] and purines} and methionine. Depressed de novo thymidylate (dTMP) synthesis leads to uracil accumulation in DNA. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine how B-12 availability affects mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) integrity and mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle. B-12 deficiency was modeled in young-adult mice. Intramuscular B-12 injection in aged mice assessed the role of B-12 supplementation in age-related changes in skeletal muscl

Functional Resistance Training to Improve Knee Strength and Function After Acute Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Thigh muscle weakness after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) can persist after returning to activity. While resistance training can improve muscle function, "nonfunctional" training methods are not optimal for inducing transfer of benefits to activities such as walking. Here, we tested the feasibility of a novel functional resistance training (FRT) approach to restore strength and function in an individual with ACLR. HYPOTHESIS: FRT would improve knee strength and function after ACLR. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 5. METHODS: A 15-year-old

The melorheostosis with severe knee and ankle deformity treated by total knee arthroplasty with V-Y quadricepsplasty: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Melorheostosis is a rare disease with a classical radiological performance appearing as the sign of skeletal hyperostosis like dripping wax flowing down from candle. The pathological bone hyperostosis and soft tissue fibrosis frequently resulted in intolerable pain and functional loss. Due to the low incidence of 0.9 per million, the management for the disease is rarely reported. In this report, we introduce a typical case of melorheostosis affecting both knee and ankle and share the management and outcome for this patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old female patient presented

Medial parapatellar surgical approach leads to greater loss of postural sway complexity compared to mid-vastus approach in women undergoing total knee arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with acute postoperative effects that increase the risk of falls. These effects differ between the medial parapatellar (PP) and mid-vastus (MV) surgical techniques but have not been evaluated in terms of postural sway complexity. Loss of this complexity leads to increased randomness in the center of pressure and higher fall risk. This exploratory comparative analysis addresses this knowledge gap by examining how PP and MV techniques affect postural sway complexity in women. METHODS: Twenty women with osteoarthritis (OA) were randomly assign

Editorial Commentary: Early Outcomes of Suture Tape Augmentation in Quadriceps Tendon Autograft Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Are Promising but Require Long-term Proof.

The management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries continually evolves, with new interest in all-soft tissue quadriceps tendon autograft, as well as new interest in suture tape augmentation of the graft, particularly in high-risk patients with young age; female sex; lower-limb alignment, tibial, or femoral abnormalities; hyperlaxity; concomitant meniscal and/or additional ligamentous injuries; or participation in high-risk sports. Load-sharing suture tape enhances the biomechanical stability of the reconstructed ACL, especially during the initial ingrowth and ligamentization phase, an

Comparison of Surgical Outcomes for Distal Rectus Femoris Transfer and Resection Surgeries in Children With Cerebral Palsy With Stiff Knee Gait.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often present with a stiff knee gait pattern because of rectus femoris (RF) spasticity and/or contracture. Rectus femoris transfers (RFTs) and resections are surgical procedures aimed at reducing muscle stiffness, thereby improving knee flexion during the swing phase of gait. Previous research has consistently demonstrated objective benefits of rectus transfer using instrumented gait analysis (IGA). Rectus femoris resection (RFR), a relatively simpler procedure, shows similar improvement in knee range of motion during gait. The objective of this st
