What slows the progress of health systems strengthening at subnational level? A political economy analysis of three districts in Uganda.

There is increasing recognition that without stronger health systems, efforts to improve global health and Universal Health Coverage cannot be achieved. Over the last three decades, initiatives to strengthen health systems in low-income countries have attracted huge investments in the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as Universal Health Coverage. Yet, health system inadequacies persist, especially at the subnational level. Our paper presents a political economy analysis featuring a three-district case study in Uganda, where distr

Power, participation, and patriarchy: a mixed-methods study of Palestinian women in political and public life with insights on health.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the extent and nature of Palestinian women’s political participation and leadership, highlighting the challenges they encounter in accessing and exercising power within political and public arenas. Despite formal policy advances, ongoing occupation, entrenched patriarchy, and political fragmentation continue to create significant barriers to meaningful political inclusion. Grounded in feminist institutionalism, the research analyzes how formal institutional frameworks and informal socio-cultural norms interact to shape women’s political engagement, while assessi

Evaluation of CRP SNV rs2808630 and acute proinflammatory biomarkers in patients with CKD and PLHIV with CKD: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The CKD in PLHIV is highly prevalent in Jalisco. Despite its control with ART, HIV is characterized by generating low-grade inflammation events that contribute to the development and progression of CKD. Considering the importance of hs-CRP in the context of CKD, various genetic predisposition studies have been conducted to search for variants of the CRP gene, among which the SNV rs2808630 has been associated with serum hs-CRP concentrations and progression of CKD. Due to the above, there is interest in studying this SNV, addressing the limited information available on this topic in

Intersecting injustices: child marriage and the law in conflict-affected Sudan.

Sudan is the only country in North Africa that is yet to reform its family law embodied by the Personal Status Act for Muslims of 1991. This law legalises child marriage, contradicts the National Child Act of 2010 that outlaws child marriage. This study aimed to understand how the pluralistic legal system in Sudan affects the occurrence and circumstances of child marriage in Kassala State in the context of the current war, to inform future advocacy efforts to ban child marriage. Thirteen key informants were interviewed in Kassala state and at the national level, complemented by one focus group

"Unintended pregnancy and attitudes towards sexual and reproductive health among young people in Benguela Province, Angola".

BACKGROUND: Young women (YW) in Angola face multiple, intersecting challenges related to sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including high rates of early and unintended pregnancy, limited access to contraception, gender-based violence (GBV), and unsafe abortion. These issues are shaped by structural inequalities, restrictive laws, stigma, and inadequate youth-friendly services. Despite the urgency, qualitative research exploring youth perspectives on SRH in Angola remains scarce. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in May 2023 in Benguela Province, Angola, as part of the formativ

Reoperation for Recurrence After Groin Hernia Repair in Adolescents: A Nationwide Register-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Although mesh-based repairs are used in adults to reduce the risk of recurrence, their necessity in adolescents remains debated. Nonmesh repairs are often preferred in younger patients to avoid potential long-term complications, but data on recurrence rates in this age group are limited. We aimed to assess the rate of reoperation for recurrence following primary groin hernia repair in adolescents aged 10-19 years. METHODS: This was a register-based cohort study covering three decades (1992-2022), utilizing data from the Danish National Patient Register linked to data from the Dani

The "No-Fault" Principle in the Context of the Compensation System for Patients Affected by Bariatric Surgeons' Medical Services.

Introduction: The high risk associated with bariatric procedures prompts an analysis of the civil liability of bariatric surgeons towards patients. This liability may arise from medical errors, lack of appropriate patient consent, or insufficient information about possible procedure outcomes. The high risk of postoperative complications, independent of physician errors, makes bariatrics a particularly significant field for considering the "no-fault" principle.Aim: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the need to introduce the "no-fault&qu

Insights into canine rabies vaccination Disparities in Sierra Leone: A cross-sectional household study.

Annually, Sierra Leone records an estimated 301 human fatalities due to rabies. Canine vaccination is crucial for rabies prevention and control efforts. However, considerable variability exists in vaccination rates. Reasons for this variation remain unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study across 2,558 dog-owning households (HHs) to provide insights into factors influencing canine vaccination for targeted prevention and control towards elimination by 2030. First, we described dog ownership practices, then built a probabilistic model to understand factors associated with dog vaccination, a

"Quality teaches you how to use water. It doesn't provide a water pump": a qualitative study of context and mechanisms of action in an Ethiopian quality improvement program.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement collaboratives are a common approach to bridging the quality-of-care gap, but little is known about implementation in low-income settings. Implementers rarely consider mechanisms of change or the role of context, which may explain collaboratives' varied impacts. METHODS: To understand mechanisms and contextual influences we conducted 55 in-depth interviews with staff from four health centres and two hospitals involved in quality improvement collaboratives in Ethiopia. We also generated control charts for selected indicators to explore any impacts of the collabo
