The interaction between polygenic risk score and trauma affects the likelihood of post-traumatic stress disorder in female victims of sexual assault.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by traumatic events, but genetic vulnerability and a history of childhood trauma may also increase the risk of PTSD onset. Thus, we investigated the interaction between genetic susceptibility according to polygenic risk score (PRS), and traumatic events. METHODS: We evaluated 68 women with PTSD who had been sexually assaulted and 63 healthy controls with no history of sexual assault. DNA was genotyped using the Infinium Global Screening Array (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA), and PRS analysis was performed using PRSice. Logistic regr

Co-occurrence of Dating Violence Victimization Subtypes: Assessing the Influence of Family Factors, Dating Attitudes, Risky Behaviors, and the Moderating Effect of Gender Among School-Aged Teens.

Using data from a nationally representative sample of school-aged teens (n = 795), this study examined covariates associated with three subtypes of dating violence victimization (physical violence, emotional abuse, and imposed isolation). We asked the research questions: What were the family factors, dating attitudes, and risky behaviors associated with three subtypes of dating violence victimization across two time points? Second, were these relationships moderated by gender? Overall, we found widespread co-occurrence of victimization. Contrary to our predictions, not all earlier experiences

Maladaptive Daydreaming Is Associated With Intensified Psychosocial Problems Experienced by Female Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

We measured maladaptive daydreaming (MD) and psychosocial indices among 194 participants, aged 18-56  years: 99 female survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and 95 control respondents with no reported history of sexual abuse. Our data show that survivors of CSA scored higher on MD compared to controls. Survivors of CSA with probable MD scored higher on psychological distress, social phobia, and social isolation compared to survivors of CSA without suspected MD, implying that MD might exacerbate the psychosocial problems linked with CSA. MD psychological screening of female survivors of CSA

Trauma histories, substance use coping, PTSD, and problem substance use among sexual assault victims.

Sexual assault history is associated with higher risk of problem drinking and drug use in women, yet little is known about mechanisms linking trauma histories in general to women's drinking or drug use problems. This study examined how various types of trauma, substance use coping, and PTSD relate to past-year problem drinking and drug use in women who experienced sexual assault. Data from a large, diverse sample of women who had experienced adult sexual assault were analyzed with structural equation modeling to test a theoretical model of the relationship between trauma types, substance use c

Prevalence and correlates of victimization and weapon carrying among military- and nonmilitary-connected youth in Southern California.

OBJECTIVES: The present analysis sought to explore the normative rates and correlates of school victimization and weapon carrying among military-connected and nonmilitary-connected youth in public schools in Southern California. METHODS: Data are from a sub-sample of the 2011 California Healthy Kids Survey (N=14,512). Items to assess victimization and weapon carrying were separated into three categories: physical acts (e.g., being pushed or shoved), nonphysical acts (e.g., having rumors spread about them) and weapon carrying. RESULTS: The bivariate results indicate that youth with a military

Patterns of multiple victimization among maltreated children in Navy families.

The current study examined the cumulative risk associated with children's exposure to multiple types of parent-inflicted victimization. The sample was comprised of 195 children who were 7 to 17 years old (64.1% female and 48.2% non-White) at the time of referral to the United States Navy's Family Advocacy Program due to allegations of sexual abuse, physical abuse, or parental intimate partner violence. We conducted an exploratory latent class analysis to identify distinct subgroups of children based on lifetime victimization. We hypothesized that at least 2 classes or subgroups would be identi

Victimization, smoking, and chronic physical health problems among sexual minority women.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW) have been shown to be at increased risk for abuse, smoking, and chronic physical health problems compared with heterosexual women. In the general population, abuse and smoking are associated with physical health problems. However, there has been little research on their associations among SMW. PURPOSE: The current study examined a mediational model of abuse, smoking, and self-reported physical health conditions in a national sample of SMW. METHODS: Participants (N = 1,224) were recruited via the Internet and completed measures of childhood trauma, adul

HIV risk among female sex workers in Miami: the impact of violent victimization and untreated mental illness.

Street-based female sex workers constitute a vulnerable population for HIV, as they are often enmeshed in chronic patterns of substance use, sexual risk, homelessness, and violent victimization. This study examined the specific contributions of victimization history and abuse-related traumagenic factors to mental health functioning and sexual risk behaviors, while considering the impact of environmental risk factors as well. Using targeted sampling strategies, we enrolled 562 Miami-based female sex workers into an intervention trial testing the relative effectiveness of two alternative case ma

Serotonin transporter gene moderates the development of emotional problems among children following bullying victimization.

OBJECTIVE: Bullying is the act of intentionally and repeatedly causing harm to someone who has difficulty defending him- or herself, and is a relatively widespread school-age phenomenon. Being the victim of bullying is associated with a broad spectrum of emotional problems; however, not all children who are bullied go on to develop such problems. METHOD: We tested the hypothesis that the relationship between bullying victimization and emotional problems was moderated by variation in the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene in 2,232 British children comprising the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) stu

Alcohol use among female sex workers and male clients: an integrative review of global literature.

AIMS: To review the patterns, contexts and impacts of alcohol use associated with commercial sex reported in the global literature. METHODS: We identified peer-reviewed English-language articles from 1980 to 2008 reporting alcohol consumption among female sex workers (FSWs) or male clients. We retrieved 70 articles describing 76 studies, in which 64 were quantitative (52 for FSWs, 12 for male clients) and 12 qualitative. RESULTS: Studies increased over the past three decades, with geographic concentration of the research in Asia and North America. Alcohol use was prevalent among FSWs and cli

The link between recent sexual abuse and drug use among African American male college students: it's not just a female problem in and around campus.

This study examined the relationship between sexual abuse in or around campus and drug use among young African-American males in college. It offers cross-sectional analysis of data collected from the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Awareness and Use Study (ASAAUS). Data collection took place in October 2004 via a self-administered survey among 181 African-American male students. Males who reported past sexual abuse in or around campus were significantly more likely than nonsexually-abused males to have used tobacco (41% v. 19%, p < .05), alcohol (82% v. 49%, p < .05), marijuana (59% v. 30%, p < .0

Risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an elevated risk with regard to social and behavioural domains in adolescents of single parents. However, the diversity of single parent families concerning gender of the resident parent has seldom been taken into account when investigating the relation between family structure and children's negative outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures using more detailed sub-groups of single parents (i.e., single mother, single father and shared phys

Intimate male partner violence impairs immune control over herpes simplex virus type 1 in physically and psychologically abused women.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a worldwide problem and a cause of significant distress and threat to health. Studies have focused mainly on mental health, and few have considered the effect on physiological systems. The aim of this research was to determine whether IPV also compromises the immune system, as evidenced by a decrease in immune regulation over herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), the latent virus that causes cold sores. METHODS: Physically abused (N = 47) and psychologically abused women (N = 27) were compared with nonabused control women (N = 37). In

The psychological impact of terrorism: an epidemiologic study of posttraumatic stress disorder and associated factors in victims of the 1995-1996 bombings in France.

OBJECTIVE: A wave of bombings struck France in 1995 and 1996, killing 12 people and injuring more than 200. The authors conducted follow-up evaluations with the victims in 1998 to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: Victims directly exposed to the bombings (N=228) were recruited into a retrospective, cross-sectional study. Computer-assisted telephone interviews were conducted to evaluate PTSD, per DSM-IV criteria, and to assess health status before the attack, initial injury severity and perceived threat at the time of attack,

Alcohol-positive polytrauma patients: injury patterns, ICU resource use and mortality at a German Level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: In most countries, alcohol consumption is so culturally ingrained that even small amounts are permitted while driving. Even at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5 g/L, ethanol impairs mental and cognitive performance. Studies from the US and Europe estimate that elevated blood alcohol levels may be detected in 10%-40% of all emergency department patients. Against this background, we investigated the impact of alcohol consumption on injury severity, injury patterns, as well as primary and secondary outcomes in polytrauma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-
