Frontoethmoid osteoma with pneumocephalus: options for surgical management.

Pneumocephalus is an exceedingly rare complication associated with neurological deficit in cases of frontoethmoid osteoma. The overarching management strategy for affected patients remains undefined. We describe the case of a 61-year-old female patient presenting with frontoethmoid osteoma manifesting as profound intraparenchymal pneumocephalus and associated neurological deficit, treated through a minimally invasive combined surgical strategy involving image-guided burr hole decompression of the pneumocephalus followed by transnasal endoscopic removal of the tumor. Using this approach, the pa

Ground-glass pattern fibrous dysplasia of frontal sinus.

The case of a 5-year-old boy with ground-glass pattern craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (FD) presenting with progressive swelling in the right frontal region is reported. The imaging findings with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are presented. The differential diagnosis with inspissated mucocele is discussed as well. Fibrous tissue could be hypo dense on CT. Post-contrast enhancement of the lesion on MRI is the key for diagnosis.

Atypical traumatic craniocervical junction focal spinal subdural hematoma.

Spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) is a rare entity and post-traumatic cervical SSDH is very rare. Review of the literature revealed 8 reported cases of traumatic SSDH and only 2 were cervical. The exact mechanism and pathogenesis of SSDHs are unclear. There are still controversies about the source of bleeding and mechanisms of formation of a hematoma. Here we report a case of a unique traumatic craniocervical junction focal subdural hematoma in an 8-year-old boy and discuss the possible mechanisms of SSDHs in trauma cases.

Characteristics of bony erosion in allergic fungal rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Erosion of bone with or without extension of disease into adjacent anatomic spaces is observed among some patients with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS). The objective of this report is to further define these findings as they relate to this disease. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of 142 patients with AFRS diagnosed using the Bent-Kuhn criteria. All patients were treated at a single institution. RESULTS: Approximately 20% of patients with AFRS demonstrated bone erosion on CT scan. The ethmoid sinus was the most commonly eroded site. The orbit and anterior cranial f

Severe rhabdomyolysis with good recovery in a patient with head injury: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report a case of head injury, in which a hyperosmolar state evolved during the course of treatment, complicated by severe rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure, which subsequently resulted in a good recovery after intensive supportive treatment. To our knowledge, such high levels of creatine kinase in a patient with head injury and rhabdomyolysis have not been reported. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 19-year-old male patient with head injury sustained a compound fracture of the frontal region. He received a hyperosmolar agent to treat brain edema and d

Previously apparently undescribed syndrome: shallow orbits, ptosis, coloboma, trigonocephaly, gyral malformations, and mental and growth retardation.

We describe 2 children with severe ptosis, trigonocephaly, broad nasal bridge, and major brain malformation. A total of 8 children have been reported who share most of these findings. Two of the individuals have had identical pericentric inversions involving chromosome 2p12-q14. These cases appear to represent a unique malformation syndrome.

Frontal sinus and supraorbital fractures from vehicle accidents.

Fractures of the upper third of the face from vehicle accidents are relatively uncommon but can have serious associated injuries of the dura and frontal lobe when they do occur. The injury may result from the victim's face either striking the dashboard or bouncing violently off the lower broken edge of the penetrated windshield.

H3F3B gene mutation in chondroblastomas: a multicenter study.

OBJECTIVE: Chondroblastoma (CB) is a benign but locally aggressive bone tumor that may present histopathologic diagnostic challenges, partic … n mutation-positive and mutation-negative cases. A notable case involved a 72-year-old patient with frontal bone involvement, highlighting the diagnostic difficulty in unusual locations and older age groups. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate that H3F3B mutation analysis is an extremely sensitive and reliable molecular tool for confirming the diagnosis of C …

Clinical outcomes of intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures with third fragments: a retrospective analysis of risk factors for delayed union.

BACKGROUND: This study retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures with third fragments and analyzed the risk factors for delayed union. METHODS: Retrospective analyses involving 51 patients who underwent intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures with third fragments (AO classification type B, 35 cases; type C, 16 cases) were conducted. Delayed union was defined as either more than 10 months required for callus formation in more than three of the four cortical bone surfaces observed in the frontal and lateral radiographic views

Unexpected brain metastases from neuroendocrine prostate cancer detected by [18F]fluorocholine PET/CT: a case report.

Neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) is a rare and aggressive variant of prostate carcinoma, often associated with atypical metastatic spread and poor prognosis. Brain metastases from NEPC are exceptional and may pose significant diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 59-year-old man referred for initial staging of prostate cancer after a transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy that initially demonstrated poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Whole-body [18F]fluorocholine positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) revealed subcentimetric hypermetabolic foci in the left fro

Current insights into circulating biomarkers and their potential for predicting adolescent idiopathic scoliosis progression.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformation of the spine with a frontal plane curvature of 10° or more, measured using Cobb method. It typically gets more severe during pre-puberty and puberty, currently exhibiting unpredictable progression. Severe disease is more prevalent in females, and progression is associated with respiratory and neuromuscular dysfunction, pain, and psychological complications. Management strategies are guided by curve severity and include observation, therapeutic exercises, bracing, and surgery. Despite advances, the cellular and molecular m

Virtual surgical planning in frontofacial advancement using a customized RED II distractor in children with syndromic craniosynostosis and midfacial hypoplasia.

Syndromic craniosynostosis is frequently associated with severe midfacial hypoplasia, resulting in functional impairment such as elevated intracranial pressure, airway obstruction, and exorbitism. Frontofacial advancement is a complex and technically demanding procedure in a pediatric population. This study evaluates a structured approach combining VSP (Virtual surgical planning) with a customized RED II distractor. A retrospective analysis of patients with syndromic craniosynostosis treated between 2022 and 2026 at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin was performed. Eight Patients were includ

A Recurrent Mutation in Growth Hormone Receptor (GHR) Gene Underlying Laron-type Dwarfism in a Pakistani Family.

Laron syndrome (LS) is a rare autosomal recessively segregating disorder of severe short stature. The condition is characterized by short limbs, delayed puberty, hypoglycemia in infancy, and obesity. Mutations in growth hormone receptor (GHR) have been implicated in LS; hence, it is also known as growth hormone insensitivity syndrome (MIM-262500). Here we represent a consanguineous Pakistani family in which three siblings were afflicted with LS. Patients had rather similar phenotypic presentations marked with short stature, delayed bone age, limited extension of elbows, truncal obesity, delaye

Reconstruction of Scalp Anterior Hairline with Tissue Expansion and Skin Flap.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous defects involving the frontal region and anterior hairline of the scalp can result from congenital or acquired conditions. The negative esthetic impact can cause disturbances in the psychic and social sphere of the patient, causing problems in interpersonal relationships and in the body image itself. The use of skin expanders is usually effective in this region due to the bone base providing support and stability for its use. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman submitted to reconstruction of the anterior hairline of the scalp due to scar sequelae a
