A convolutional neural network architecture for the recognition of cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, dermatologists reported an array of different cutaneous manifestations of the disease. It is challenging to discriminate COVID-19-related cutaneous manifestations from other closely resembling skin lesions. The aim of this study was to generate and evaluate a novel CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) ensemble architecture for detection of COVID-19-associated skin lesions from clinical images. An ensemble model of three different CNN-based algorithms was trained with clinical images of skin lesions from confirmed COVID-19 positive patients, healthy controls as well

Convolutional neural network for discriminating nasopharyngeal carcinoma and benign hyperplasia on MRI.

OBJECTIVES: A convolutional neural network (CNN) was adapted to automatically detect early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and discriminate it from benign hyperplasia on a non-contrast-enhanced MRI sequence for potential use in NPC screening programs. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 412 patients who underwent T2-weighted MRI, 203 of whom had biopsy-proven primary NPC confined to the nasopharynx (stage T1) and 209 had benign hyperplasia without NPC. Thirteen patients were sampled randomly to monitor the training process. We applied the Residual Attention Network architecture, adapted

Detection of shockable ventricular cardiac arrhythmias from ECG signals using FFREWT filter-bank and deep convolutional neural network.

Among various life-threatening cardiac disorders, ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) are shockable ventricular cardiac arrhythmias (SVCA) which require immediate defibrillation therapy for the survival of patients. Timely and accurate detection of rapid VT or VF episodes using ECG signals is extremely important before initiating external defibrillator (AED) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapies. In this paper, a novel approach for the detection of SVCA using ECG signals is proposed. The fixed frequency range empirical wavelet transform (EWT) (FF

Comparing regression and neural network techniques for personalized predictive analytics to promote lung protective ventilation in Intensive Care Units.

Mechanical ventilation is a lifesaving tool and provides organ support for patients with respiratory failure. However, injurious ventilation due to inappropriate delivery of high tidal volume can initiate or potentiate lung injury. This could lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, ventilator associated conditions and finally increased mortality. In this study, we explore the viability and compare machine learning methods to generate personalized predictive alerts indicating violation of the safe tidal volume per ideal body weight (IBW) threshold

A novel tool to provide predictable alignment data irrespective of source and image quality acquired on mobile phones: what engineers can offer clinicians.

PURPOSE: Existing automated spine alignment is based on original X-rays that are not applicable for teleradiology for spinal deformities patients. We aim to provide a novel automated vertebral segmentation method enabling accurate sagittal alignment detection, with no restrictions imposed by image quality or pathology type. METHODS: A total of 428 optical images of original sagittal X-rays taken by smartphones or screenshots for consecutive patients attending our spine clinic were prospectively collected. Of these, 300 were randomly selected and their vertebrae were labelled with Labelme. The

Optical Temperature Control Unit and Convolutional Neural Network for Colorimetric Detection of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification on a Lab-On-A-Disc Platform.

Lab-on-a-disc (LOD) has emerged as a promising candidate for a point-of-care testing (POCT) device because it can effectively integrate complex fluid manipulation steps using multiple layers of polymeric substrates. However, it is still highly challenging to design and fabricate temperature measurement and heating system in non-contact with the surface of LOD, which is a prerequisite to successful realization of DNA amplification especially with a rotatable disc. This study presents a Lab-on-a-disc (LOD)-based automatic loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) system, where a thermochromi

Handling limited datasets with neural networks in medical applications: A small-data approach.

MOTIVATION: Single-centre studies in medical domain are often characterised by limited samples due to the complexity and high costs of patient data collection. Machine learning methods for regression modelling of small datasets (less than 10 observations per predictor variable) remain scarce. Our work bridges this gap by developing a novel framework for application of artificial neural networks (NNs) for regression tasks involving small medical datasets. METHODS: In order to address the sporadic fluctuations and validation issues that appear in regression NNs trained on small datasets, the me

Combining two open source tools for neural computation (BioPatRec and Netlab) improves movement classification for prosthetic control.

BACKGROUND: Controlling a myoelectric prosthesis for upper limbs is increasingly challenging for the user as more electrodes and joints become available. Motion classification based on pattern recognition with a multi-electrode array allows multiple joints to be controlled simultaneously. Previous pattern recognition studies are difficult to compare, because individual research groups use their own data sets. To resolve this shortcoming and to facilitate comparisons, open access data sets were analysed using components of BioPatRec and Netlab pattern recognition models. METHODS: Performances

Derivation and validation of a clinical diagnostic tool for the identification of older community-dwellers with hypovitaminosis D.

OBJECTIVES: Hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent among seniors. Although evidence is insufficient to recommend routine vitamin D screening in seniors, universal vitamin D supplementation is not desirable either. To rationalize vitamin D determination, our objective was to elaborate and test a clinical diagnostic tool for the identification of seniors with hypovitaminosis D without using a blood test. DESIGN: Derivation of a clinical diagnostic tool using artificial neural networks (multilayer perceptron; MLP) in randomized training subgroup of Prévention des Chutes, Réseau 4' cohort, and val

Predicting subcontractor performance using web-based Evolutionary Fuzzy Neural Networks.

Subcontractor performance directly affects project success. The use of inappropriate subcontractors may result in individual work delays, cost overruns, and quality defects throughout the project. This study develops web-based Evolutionary Fuzzy Neural Networks (EFNNs) to predict subcontractor performance. EFNNs are a fusion of Genetic Algorithms (GAs), Fuzzy Logic (FL), and Neural Networks (NNs). FL is primarily used to mimic high level of decision-making processes and deal with uncertainty in the construction industry. NNs are used to identify the association between previous performance and

Efficient online bootstrapping of sensory representations.

This is a simulation-based contribution exploring a novel approach to the open-ended formation of multimodal representations in autonomous agents. In particular, we address the issue of transferring ("bootstrapping") feature selectivities between two modalities, from a previously learned or innate reference representation to a new induced representation. We demonstrate the potential of this algorithm by several experiments with synthetic inputs modeled after a robotics scenario where multimodal object representations are "bootstrapped" from a (reference) representation of object affordances. A framework for automatic heart sound analysis without segmentation.

BACKGROUND: A new framework for heart sound analysis is proposed. One of the most difficult processes in heart sound analysis is segmentation, due to interference form murmurs. METHOD: Equal number of cardiac cycles were extracted from heart sounds with different heart rates using information from envelopes of autocorrelation functions without the need to label individual fundamental heart sounds (FHS). The complete method consists of envelope detection, calculation of cardiac cycle lengths using auto-correlation of envelope signals, features extraction using discrete wavelet transform, princ

Development of a method based on surface enhanced laser desorption and ionization time of flight mass spectrometry for rapid identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

A method based on surface enhanced laser desorption and ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS) was developed for the rapid identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae by directly applying bacterial colonies without further protein extraction. A total of 40 K. pneumoniae and 114 other related microorganisms isolated clinically were analyzed by SELDI-TOF MS. An identification model for K. pneumoniae was established by artificial neural networks (ANNs) with classification accuracy of 100%. The model was blindly tested with 43 K. pneumoniae and 53 control bacteria again. The result

[Comparison of predictive effect between the single auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and the ARIMA-generalized regression neural network (GRNN) combination model on the incidence of scarlet fever].

Application of the 'single auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model' and the 'ARIMA-generalized regression neural network (GRNN) combination model' in the research of the incidence of scarlet fever. Establish the auto regressive integrated moving average model based on the data of the monthly incidence on scarlet fever of one city, from 2000 to 2006. The fitting values of the ARIMA model was used as input of the GRNN, and the actual values were used as output of the GRNN. After training the GRNN, the effect of the single ARIMA model and the ARIMA-GRNN combination model was then

Neural networks and statistical analysis for classification of corneal videokeratography maps based on Zernike coefficients: a quantitative comparison.

PURPOSE: The main goal of this study was to develop and compare two different techniques for classification of specific types of corneal shapes when Zernike coefficients are used as inputs. A feed-forward artificial Neural Network (NN) and discriminant analysis (DA) techniques were used. METHODS: The inputs both for the NN and DA were the first 15 standard Zernike coefficients for 80 previously classified corneal elevation data files from an Eyesys System 2000 Videokeratograph (VK), installed at the Departamento de Oftalmologia of the Escola Paulista de Medicina, São Paulo. The NN had 5 outpu

From parallel sequence representations to calligraphic control: a conspiracy of neural circuits.

Calligraphic writing presents many challenges for motor control, including: learning and recall of stroke sequences; critical timing of stroke onsets and durations; fine control of grip and contact forces; and letterform invariance under size scaling, which entails fine control of stroke directions and amplitudes during recruitment and derecruitment of musculoskeletal degrees of freedom. Experimental and computational studies in behavioral neuroscience have progressed toward explaining the learning, planning, and control exercised in tasks that share features with calligraphic writing and draw

Phase maintenance in the pyloric pattern of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion.

The extent to which individual neural networks can produce phase-constant motor patterns as cycle frequency is altered has not been studied extensively. I investigated this issue in the well-defined, rhythmic pyloric neural network. When pyloric cycle frequency is altered three- to fivefold, pyloric inter-neuronal delays shift by hundreds to thousands of msec, and all pyloric pattern elements show strong phase maintenance. The experimental paradigm used is unlikely to activate exogenous inputs to the network, and these delay changes are thus likely to arise from phase-compensatory mechanisms i

INTERPRETING CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKS IN POPULATION GENETICS.

Machine learning approaches have become a powerful alternative to traditional methods in population genetics. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in particular have been successful in inferring natural selection, recombination rate estimation, introgression, dispersal distances, and effective population size changes. One limitation of CNNs and other deep learning methods is that they can be difficult to interpret. When they have been shown to be as or more successful than summary-statistic-based methods, what are they learning? Here we investigate CNNs from two different methods: the pg-gan d
