Social and structural risks for HIV among migrant and immigrant men who have sex with men in Moscow, Russia: implications for prevention.

Moscow has a large population of immigrants and migrants from across the Former Soviet Union. Little is studied about men who have sex with men (MSM) within these groups. Qualitative research methods were used to explore identities, practices, and factors affecting HIV prevention and risks among immigrant/migrant MSM in Moscow. Nine interviews and three focus group discussions were conducted between April-June 2010 with immigrant/migrant MSM, analyzed as a subset of a larger population of MSM who participated in qualitative research (n=121). Participants were purposively selected men who repor

Multilevel predictors of concurrent opioid use during methadone maintenance treatment among drug users with HIV/AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Ongoing drug use during methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) negatively affects outcomes of HIV/AIDS care and treatment for drug users. This study assessed changes in opioid use, and longitudinal predictors of continued opioid use during MMT among HIV-positive drug users in Vietnam, with the aim of identifying changes that might enhance program efficacy. METHODS: We analyze data of 370 HIV-positive drug users (mean age 29.5; 95.7% male) taking MMT at multi-sites. Opioid use was assessed at baseline, 3, 6, and 9 months using interviews and heroin confirmatory urine tests. A social

Condom negotiations among female sex workers in the Philippines: environmental influences.

BACKGROUND: Social and structural influences of condom negotiation among female sex workers (FSWs) remain understudied. This study assesses environmental and individual factors associated with condom negotiation among FSWs at high risk for acquiring HIV in a large urban setting of Metro Manila, Philippines. METHODS: Female bar/spa workers (N = 498), aged 18 and over, underwent interview-led surveys examining their sexual health practices in the context of their risk environments. Data were collected from April 2009-January 2010 from 54 venues. Multiple logistic regressions were conducted to a

Digital advance care planning education in nursing home placements: a qualitative descriptive study of nursing students' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning (ACP) is a core component of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care, particularly in nursing homes where residents commonly experience frailty, multimorbidity and cognitive impairment. Although digital ACP education has shown promise for qualified staff, limited qualitative evidence has examined how undergraduate nursing students experience such learning during clinical placement. This study explored first-year nursing students' experiences of using an online e-resource during nursing home placements exploring its acceptability, perceived influence on kn

Focused ethnography protocol for exploring burn pain management practices in clinical settings: methodological considerations and implementation framework.

INTRODUCTION: Effective burn pain management is profoundly influenced by cultural contexts, and the complexity of this context is intensified by migration. However, the limited understanding of the relationship between culture and pain is an important barrier to delivering high-quality, person-centred care. Achieving a deeper understanding of this phenomenon is essential for developing effective care plans. This approach can mitigate long-term consequences such as post-traumatic stress disorder and ultimately improve the quality of life for burn survivors, moving beyond purely physiological tr

Real-time prospective (shadow mode) validation of an AI-based clinical decision support system for predicting 3-month functional outcome in acute stroke: the VALIDATE study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Reperfusion therapies improve outcomes in acute ischaemic stroke, but hyperacute treatment decisions remain complex and are rarely informed by individualised outcome predictions. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based clinical decision support systems (CDSS) could provide real-time prognostic estimates, yet prospective evidence of their feasibility and performance within routine workflows is scarce. We aim to prospectively evaluate the real-time feasibility, usability and predictive performance of an AI-based CDSS (VALIDATE-CDSS) for individualised outcome prediction in acute stroke

Redefining Readiness - Bridging Knowledge Gaps in Return-to-Sport Criteria.

CONTEXT: Return-to-sport (RTS) decision-making is a pivotal phase in athletic rehabilitation, yet current practices are often fragmented and applied inconsistently. Inadequate interdisciplinary collaboration, misinterpretation of physician clearance, and systemic barriers contribute to suboptimal outcomes and elevated reinjury risk. The purpose of this review is to highlight critical knowledge gaps in RTS criteria and propose a multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial framework that integrates physical, psychological, and sport-specific readiness. The review emphasizes the importance of standardized

Cultural alienation and psychological well-being in Mongolian pre-college students: a person-centered profiling study.

INTRODUCTION: As educational institutions worldwide strive to support minority students' academic success and psychological well-being, understanding the complex dynamics of cultural alienation becomes increasingly crucial. This study examines how cultural alienation-including cultural loneliness, separation, disharmony, and perceived discrimination-influences the psychological adaptation of Mongolian minority pre-college students in Inner Mongolia, where institutional practices and social dynamics predominantly reflect Han Chinese cultural norms. METHODS: A sample of 73 participants complete

Fostering speaking gains through flipped instruction: a mixed-methods study of self-regulation, motivation, and foreign language classroom anxiety in Chinese EFL learners.

INTRODUCTION: Flipped instruction has gained traction in computer-assisted language learning, but evidence of its effects on L2 speaking and the underlying affective and motivational mechanisms remains limited, especially for young adult EFL learners in East Asia. METHODS: This explanatory sequential mixed methods study examined how a 16-week flipped speaking course influenced Chinese EFL learners' speaking performance, speaking-specific self-regulation, motivation, and foreign language classroom anxiety. Seventy-four first-year English majors were assigned to a flipped group (n = 38) receivi

Impact of treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia on later education, paid labor, and sickness- or activity compensation: A registry study from Sweden.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in childhood now carries survival rates above 90%, yet treatment may result in late effects that influence later educational and labor market outcomes. Previous studies have shown inconsistent results, and few have used population-based registry data with matched controls while distinguishing between different treatment intensities. The aim of this study was to assess post-compulsory educational and labor market outcomes among children treated for ALL categorized into standard-risk (SR) and high-risk (HR) treatment groups. We conducted a nationwide registry-b

Comparing methods to measure wearable device adherence for physical activity monitoring for persons with autism: A prospective observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have higher rates of obesity and exhibit more sedentary behaviors than neurotypical peers. Use of wearable devices (WD) to target insufficient physical activity (PA) in this population has increased over the past decade. However, standardized methods for assessing WD adherence remain limited among this understudied population. PURPOSE: A prospective observational cohort design was used to compare two methods for determining WD adherence for monitoring PA in adolescents and adults with ASD. METHODS: Subjects were enrolled in an 8-w

Impact of quality routine health data utilisation on health service delivery outcomes in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based decision-making in healthcare relies heavily on routine health information. However, in many low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), concerns persist regarding the use of quality routine health data for health service delivery. Moreover, no systematic synthesis currently exists on how the use of quality data influences health service delivery in these settings. This systematic review aims to address this gap by consolidating existing evidence on the utilisation of quality routine health data and its impact on health service delivery in LMICs. METHODS AND ANA

Full alcohol marketing ban and adolescent drinking patterns: a repeated cross-sectional analysis comparing Lithuania with other EU countries.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption is a leading cause of premature mortality in Europe, with adolescents particularly vulnerable to marketing influences. While alcohol marketing bans are considered a WHO 'best buy', evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. Lithuania's 2018 full national ban on alcohol marketing offers a unique opportunity to assess its impact on adolescent drinking. This study evaluated whether adolescents in Lithuania reported greater declines in alcohol use compared with peers in European Union countries without a full ban. METHODS: We conducted a difference-in-diffe

Study protocol for a multi-arm, parallel group randomised controlled trial evaluating the isolated and combined effects of behavioural promotion and hardware provision on handwashing with soap in peri-urban Lusaka, Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Diarrhoea and lower respiratory infections remain leading causes of under-five mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Handwashing with soap (HWWS) is a cost-effective intervention, yet adherence remains low. Effective interventions must address multiple behavioural influences, as knowledge alone is insufficient without supportive environments. Multi-component handwashing interventions target diverse behavioural determinants, yet few studies disentangle the isolated and combined effects of different components. This multi-arm randomised-controlled trial in Lusaka, Zambia, aims to assess

From Biomechanics to Metallobiology: A Bibliometric Mapping of Ferroptosis and Trace Elements in Osteoarthritis (2014-2024).

Osteoarthritis (OA) is clinically characterized by progressive cartilage degradation and subchondral bone remodeling. However, the conventional “wear-and-tear” model fails to account for the metabolic drivers of this degeneration, resulting in a persistent therapeutic void. This study delineates a critical paradigm shift in orthopaedic scholarship: the transition from mechanical determinism to a molecular framework governed by Metallobiology and trace element homeostasis. We executed a systematic bibliometric analysis of 570 peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus (2014–2024), manually curate

Aggression in specialized Wushu Taolu training among university students and its transfer to everyday life contexts: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how a contextual aggressive state is experienced, elicited, and regulated in Wushu Taolu, a routine-based discipline within Chinese martial arts (Wushu), among university students, and how participants perceived its possible transfer to everyday life. Rather than examining whether Wushu Taolu training increases or decreases aggression, the study focused on the specific form and meaning of this state within the training context and on participants' perceptions of whether its associated effects extended into everyday life. METHOD: A qualitative design was
