Carbohydrate-binding agents: a potential future cornerstone for the chemotherapy of enveloped viruses?

Carbohydrate-binding agents (CBAs) inhibit HIV-1 and it is proposed that therapy with such agents may have important implications for the future of anti-HIV therapy. Examples of CBAs include the procaryotic cyanovirin-N (CV-N), plant lectins such as HHA, GNA, NPA, CA and UDA, the monoclonal antibody 2G12 directed against a glycan-containing epitope on HIV envelope gp120, and the mannose-specific non-peptidic antibiotic Pradimicin A, which inhibits the entry of HIV-1 into its target cells. CBAs prevent not only virus infection of susceptible cells, but also inhibit syncytia formation between pe

[Chastity and healing power].

The idea of a connection between chastity and healing power is to be found as well in primitive cultures as in ethnomedicine and in the medicine of Antiquity. What is meant in the Hippocratic Oath, though, is not the sexual restraint of the physician himself, but moreover in the attitude towards his patient and all the people living in the same house with the patient. This is different, though, in ethnomedicine, where the healer is demanded to live sexually abstinent for a certain time and the persons assisting him are often expected to stay untouched, i.e. chaste. "Chastity", however, as conc

Cysteine proteases in oral potentially malignant disorders: Molecular drivers, diagnostic signatures, and therapeutic opportunities.

Cysteine proteases are crucial enzymes regulating protein turnover, apoptosis, signalling, and tissue remodelling, and have emerged as important regulators of the oral epithelial microenvironment with increasing evidence implicating them in the progression of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and their potential contribution to malignant transformation toward oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Dysregulated expression of these enzymes influences key molecular pathways, notably NF-κB, MAPK, protease-activated receptor (PAR) signalling, and apoptotic cascades, although the extent to

Precision nutrition and food biomanufacturing for space missions: Toward intelligent and bioregenerative life-support systems.

Long-duration spaceflight presents unique physiological and nutritional challenges due to factors such as microgravity, radiation, confinement, and circadian rhythm disruption. These stressors reshape energy metabolism, bone and muscle homeostasis, immune responses, and gut microbiota composition, leading to impaired nutrient absorption and oxidative imbalance. Conventional Earth-based dietary models are inadequate to address such complex interactions, highlighting the need for precise nutritional strategies combined with sustainable in-situ food production systems. This review examines recent

Comparative transcriptomics of biopesticide-treated olives subjected to Xylella infection.

BACKGROUND: The management of Xylella fastidiosa infections relies on integrated strategies of controlling vector populations and removing inoculum sources. The impact of a subspecies pauca strain of this bacterium (XfDD) was particularly severe in olive in Apulia, Italy, where an entire economy was affected, and a territory was devastated. There is an urgent request for strategies to combat the pathogen in planta, as well as for bioinsecticides targeting its vector insect species, and that these should conform to criteria of environmental acceptance. Therefore, this study analyses the Mechani

Immunoregulatory role of quercetin in lung cancer.

Long-term nourishment with quercetin, a naturally occurring plant flavonoid abundant in citrus fruits, buckwheat, and onions, has been associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases, including cancer. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential and the anti-cancer properties of quercetin in lung cancer using in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models. Quercetin induced tumor cell cycle arrest via the p53-p21 axis and suppressed tumor cell migration in both the A549 and H520 human lung cancer cell lines. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress and downregulated the protein expression of o

From cultural dispositions to biological dimensions: a narrative review on the synergy between oral health and vitamin D through the lens of Indian habitus.

Oral health is intricately related to systemic health, with new worldwide research demonstrating vitamin D's critical role in sustaining dental and periodontal health. Vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism, which is required for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. According to research, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the etiology of periodontal disease by decreasing the host immune response, making it more susceptible to infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. Oral health in India is a tapestry of traditional practices, socioeconomic factors,

Computational identification of promising genetic markers associated with molecular mechanisms of reduced rice resistance to Rhizoctonia solani under excess nitrogen fertilization using gene network reconstruction and analysis methods.

Although nitrogen fertilizers increase rice yield, their excess can impair plant resistance to diseases, particularly sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani. This pathogen can destroy up to 50 % of the crop, but the mechanisms underlying reduced resistance under excess nitrogen remain poorly understood. This study aims to identify potential marker genes to enhance rice resistance to R. solani under excess nitrogen conditions. A comprehensive bioinformatics approach was applied, including differential gene expression analysis, gene network reconstruction, biological process overrepresentati

Synergistic Enhancement of Isoforskolin and Dexamethasone Against Sepsis and Acute Lung Injury Mouse Models.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is initiated by the dysfunctional response of the host immune system to infection. Septic shock and acute lung injury (ALI) are the main etiology of death caused by sepsis. Glucocorticoids, which are commonly used in clinic to antagonize the inflammatory response of sepsis, may cause serious side effects. Isoforskolin (ISOF) from the plant Coleus forskohlii stimulates adenylyl cyclase, increases the cAMP level and inhibits inflammatory response. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of ISOF with dexamethasone (DEX) to prevent and ameliorate septic i

Gravity's effect on biology.

Gravity is a fundamental interaction that permeates throughout our Universe. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and has been a constant presence throughout terrestrial biological evolution. Thus, gravity has shaped all biological functions, some examples include the growth of plants (e.g., gravitropism), the structure and morphology of biological parts in multicellular organisms, to its effects on our physiological function when humans travel into space. Moreover, from an evolutionary perspective, gravity has been a constant force on biology, and life, to our understanding, sh
