[Strabismus and diplopia after refractive surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors that may decompensate a strabismus or lead to diplopia after refractive surgery. METHODS: Retrospective study of 19 patients, who presented with binocular decompensation after refractive surgery. Mean age at surgery was 38.89 SD 10.26 (27-63) years. Fourteen patients were myopic, 5 hyperopic, and 5 of them had a marked anisometropia. The photo-refractive keratectomy procedure was used in 3 cases, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in 13, posterior chamber-IOL)+LASIK in one of them, and bilateral IOL in 2 cases. RESULTS: There was a prevalence of stra

Bilateral superior altitudinal hemianopia: missing the goal, but hitting the stroke cause.

Bilateral superior altitudinal hemianopia is an uncommon clinical presentation of ischemic stroke. We report a patient who had an ischemic stroke with a pure bilateral superior altitudinal hemianopia resulting from bilateral ischemia in the optic radiation. This symptom was first overlooked and a delusion was suspected. A thorough clinical examination is essential to avoid any misdiagnosis or to overlook correct treatment.

Short tag noose technique for optional and late suture adjustment in strabismus surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To present and evaluate a new technique that allows the second-stage suture adjustment in strabismus surgery to be skipped or delayed if the immediate postoperative alignment is satisfactory. METHODS: The "short tag noose" technique replaces long sutures with short tags that can be left under the conjunctiva after adjustment. Retrospectively, the medical records of all patients treated by a single surgeon with this approach between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2008, were evaluated for success rate (< or =10 prism diopters [PD] horizontal and < or =6 PD vertical), reoperation r

The preserved temporal crescent: the clinical implications of an "endangered" finding.

Sixteen consecutive patients with a partially or completely preserved temporal crescent (PTC) in right or left eye were identified by Goldmann kinetic perimetry. PTC etiologies were stroke, birth injury, trauma, aneurysm, and migraine. PTC eludes detection by automated static perimetry of the central visual field, but its ascertainment with Goldmann perimetry usually implies contralateral occipital lobe ischemia sparing a small portion of anterior primary visual cortex.

A Comparison of Change Blindness in Real-World and On-Screen Viewing of Museum Artefacts.

Change blindness is a phenomenon of visual perception that occurs when a stimulus undergoes a change without this being noticed by its observer. To date, the effect has been produced by changing images displayed on screen as well as changing people and objects in an individual's environment. In this experiment, we combine these two approaches to directly compare the levels of change blindness produced in real-world vs. on-screen viewing of museum artefacts. In the real-world viewing condition, one group of participants viewed a series of pairs of similar but slightly different artefacts across

Amblyopia treatment of adults with dichoptic training using the virtual reality oculus rift head mounted display: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard treatments in amblyopia are penalizing therapies, such as patching or blurring vision with atropine that are aimed at forcing the use of the amblyopic eye. However, in the last years, new therapies are being developed and validated, such as dichoptic visual training, aimed at stimulating the amblyopic eye and eliminating the interocular supression. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of dichoptic visual training using a virtual reality head mounted display in a sample of anisometropic amblyopic adults and to evaluate the potential usefulness of this option of treatme

Homeostatic regulation of perisynaptic matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) activity in the amblyopic visual cortex.

Dark exposure (DE) followed by light reintroduction (LRx) reactivates robust synaptic plasticity in adult mouse primary visual cortex (V1), which allows subsequent recovery from amblyopia. Previously we showed that perisynaptic proteolysis by MMP9 mediates the enhancement of plasticity by LRx in binocular adult mice (Murase et al., 2017). However, it was unknown if a visual system compromised by amblyopia could engage this pathway. Here we show that LRx to adult amblyopic mice induces perisynaptic MMP2/9 activity and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation in deprived and non-deprived V1. Indee

Glaucoma and fitness to drive: using binocular visual fields to predict a milestone to blindness.

PURPOSE: To use binocular integrated visual field (IVF) measures to predict which patients will lose visual function to a level below the legal standard for driving. METHODS: Data from patients attending a glaucoma clinic were collected longitudinally. The time from baseline until failure to meet the criteria of the driver's license test was modeled with Cox regression. Visual field status at baseline and visual field deterioration rate at 2 years from baseline for various monocular and binocular VF indices were investigated as predictor variables. The model that provided the best fit to the

Systemic lupus erythematosus and ocular involvement: an overview.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease of undefined etiology and with remarkably heterogeneous clinical features. Virtually any organ system can be affected, including the eye. SLE-related eye involvement can be diagnosed in approximately one-third of the patients and is usually indicative of disease activity. An early diagnosis and the adoption of suitable therapeutic measures are necessary to prevent sight-threatening consequences, especially in patients with juvenile SLE. Periocular lesions, such as eyelid involvement and orbital inflammation, are relatively
