Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents: theory, treatment adaptations, and empirical outcomes.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was originally developed for chronically suicidal adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and emotion dysregulation. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) indicate DBT is associated with improvements in problem behaviors, including suicide ideation and behavior, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), attrition, and hospitalization. Positive outcomes with adults have prompted researchers to adapt DBT for adolescents. Given this interest in DBT for adolescents, it is important to review the theoretical rationale and the evidence base for this treatment and it…

Yi-gan san for treatment of charles bonnet syndrome (visual hallucination due to vision loss): an open-label study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that the traditional Japanese herbal medicine yi-gan san (YGS, yokukan-san in Japanese) may be safe and useful for treating behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia, borderline personality disorder, neuroleptic-induced tardive dyskinesia, and treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Visual hallucinations are common and often distressing consequences of vision loss, particularly in age-related macular degeneration. Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is defined by the triad of complex visual hallucinations, ocular pathology causing visual deterioration, and pres…

Associations between four types of childhood neglect and personality disorder symptoms during adolescence and early adulthood: findings of a community-based longitudinal study.

Data from a community-based longitudinal study were used to investigate the association between childhood neglect and personality disorder (PD) symptom levels during adolescence and early adulthood. Psychosocial and psychiatric interviews were administered to a representative sample of 738 youths and their mothers from upstate New York in 1975, 1983, 1985-1986, and 1991-1993. Evidence of childhood cognitive, emotional, physical, and supervision neglect was obtained from the maternal interviews that were conducted in 1975, 1983, and 1985-1986, and from New York State records. PDs were assessed

[Sleep electroencephalography in depression and mental disorders with depressive comorbidity].

Traditional scoring of sleep EEG in depressed patients shows abnormalities in sleep maintenance, sleep architecture, REM sleep, the distribution of slow wave and REM sleep during the night. Computerized analysis that comprises the period-amplitude analysis procedure and spectral analysis discloses changes in delta activity and distribution of delta activity. However, these methods of analysing EEG sleep are not able to distinguish the various concepts of depression: endogenous and non-endogenous depression, unipolar and bipolar depression, psychotic and non-psychotic depression. Under this point theatrical phenomenon was held too. Physicians often created such scenic actions themselves. The visual, pictorial expressions have begun to be shown parallel to the representation of such scenic world. That was the context to create a number of psychiatric art collections. By this kind of theatre based on esthetical judgment visual creations have been shown to the greater public promoting the representation of integral, intac

A cognitive profile of individuals who tend to worship celebrities.

Celebrity worship is a form of parasocial interaction in which individuals become obsessed with 1 or more celebrities, similar to an erotomanic type of delusional disorder. Drawing on the cognitive factors implicated in erotomania, the authors hypothesized that celebrity worshippers might be expected to exhibit verbal, visuospatial, and cognitive deficits related to flexibility and associative learning. This general hypothesis was tested in a sample of 102 participants who completed the Celebrity Attitude Scale (L. E. McCutcheon, R. Lange, & J. Houran, 2002), the Entertainment-Social, Intense-

Intellectual functioning and personal recovery in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID/BIF) and schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) may encounter unique challenges that can hinder their personal recovery. This study investigates differences in personal recovery and its subdomains over time between individuals with and without an MID/BIF indication. METHODS: Data from two measurements (baseline and one-year follow-up) from the UP's cohort study were used. The sample included 344 individuals with SSD (Male = 65.7%, Female = 34.3%, mean age = 41.2, SD = 12.4), of whom 42.4% had

Somatostatin in the cerebrospinal fluid of schizophrenic patients before and after neuroleptic drug treatment.

A radioimmunoassay procedure was used to determine levels of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from 9 schizophrenic patients, 7 patients with other psychiatric disorders, and 10 nonpsychiatric surgical controls. There were no significant differences in mean somatostatin baseline levels between the schizophrenic, nonschizophrenic, and surgical patients. The concentration remained almost unaltered after 4 weeks of zuclopenthixol treatment in the schizophrenia group and following various neuroleptic, antidepressant, and anxiolytic medications in the nonschizophren

Exploring the Feasibility of a Generic Early Intervention Programme for Emerging Personality Disorder in Adolescents: Guideline-Informed Treatment for Personality Disorders-Adolescent Version (GITPD-A).

The Guideline-Informed Treatment for Personality Disorders-Adolescent version (GITPD-A) is an accessible, general approach to treating personality disorders (PDs) in adolescents. This study assessed the feasibility of the intervention and of a multicentre research design, as a preliminary step towards larger, better-controlled trials. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used across five mental healthcare institutions. Eligible participants were adolescents aged 12-18 meeting threshold criteria for a PD under the DSM-5 alternative model. Participants (91.9% female; mean age 15.9 years) rece

The Body as a Battlefield: Identity Development and Psychosomatic Expression in Eating Disorders Across Childhood and Adolescence.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) frequently emerge during critical stages of childhood and adolescence, when identity development and emotional regulation are still maturing. Disturbances in self-concept clarity and identity integration may transform the body into a symbolic battlefield for autonomy, belonging, and self-worth. This review synthesizes developmental, psychosocial, neurocognitive, and therapeutic perspectives on the role of identity disturbance in EDs. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted (2010-2025) using combinations of terms related to identity, self-concept

Linking experiences of child sexual abuse to adult sexual intimate partner violence: the role of borderline personality features, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, and dissociation.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to a higher risk of sexual re-victimization, including sexual intimate partner violence (IPV). The aim of this study was to investigate whether borderline personality disorder (BPD) features, dissociation, and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation mediate the link between self-reported CSA severity and sexual IPV. Specifically, we were interested in the unique effect of each mediator variable, when accounting for the effect of the other variables. METHODS: Data was assessed in a cross-sectional anonymous online survey, posted on platform…

Relations among maternal withdrawal in infancy, borderline features, suicidality/self-injury, and adult hippocampal volume: A 30-year longitudinal study.

The hippocampus plays an important role in stress regulation and has been the focus of research regarding the effects of early life stress on brain development. Much of this research has focused on severe forms of early adversity, particularly maltreatment. However, a handful of studies are now examining the effects of more subtle variations in quality of early caregiving on hippocampal development. In addition, both early caregiving and hippocampal volumes have been linked to psychopathology, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD) and its associated features, such as suicidality. …

Future perspectives in esophageal manometry.

Esophageal manometry has undergone significant advancements, transitioning from conventional line tracings to high-resolution manometry with topographic analysis. This evolution has improved the classification and diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders, as defined by the Chicago Classification. However, challenges remain in interpreting borderline cases, assessing esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction, and correlating manometric findings with clinical symptoms. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing esophageal manometry by enabling automated data
