We aimed to perform an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) of randomized clinical trials (RCT) of the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to November 2020. Two independent investigators extracted the information, evaluated the methodological quality of SRMAs using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews-2 (AMSTAR2), and rated the certainty of evidence using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. This paper helps to quantify the impact of the Australian National Perinatal Depression Initiative (NPDI) on postnatal inpatient psychiatric hospitalisation. Based on individual hospital admissions data from New South Wales and Western Australia, we found that the NPDI reduced inpatient psychiatric hospital admission by up to 50% [0.9% point reduction (95% CI 0.70-1.22)] in the first postnatal year. The greatest reduction was observed for adjustment disorders. The NPDI appears to be associated with fewer post-birth psychiatric disorders hospital admissions; this suggests earlier detection of p

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is associated with HIV disease progression and, during pregnancy, increased mother-to-child transmission risk. In Ukraine, access to combination ART is expanding but data on adherence are scarce.
METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys of HIV-positive women were conducted i) at delivery (on antenatal ART adherence) and ii) during the first year postpartum (on ART adherence in the preceding four weeks). Factors associated with a score ≤ 11 on the self-report Case Adherence Support Evaluation (CASE) index or ≥ 1 self-reported missed dose were

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is an important public health issue for women, their families, and their employers. Previous studies have examined the impact of leave duration on maternal depression, but none have studied the association between maternal depression and the pace of return to paid work. We examine herein the relationship between maternal depression and return to work, and the moderating effects of pregnancy intention.
METHODS: We utilized data from the Listening to Mothers II Survey collected from January 20 through February 21, 2006. The woman had to be 18 to 45 years old, spe

Although relations of various parental psychological problems and family functioning with child development are well documented, it remains unclear whether specific prenatal or specific postnatal risk factors are independently associated with child emotional and behavioural problems, or whether observed associations can be explained by general parental psychopathology. Using a stepwise approach, we examined the effects of prenatal and postnatal parental depressive symptoms, prenatal and postnatal hostility of the parents, as well as prenatal family functioning on the risk of child emotional an

Maternal mental health (MMH) problems are a major public health concern with adverse consequences for women, their offspring and families. Intake of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially the n-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are found predominantly in cold water fish, has been associated with a range of mental health outcomes and may improve MMH. The demands for these fatty acids are increased during pregnancy and lactation, and may influence MMH as they are integral parts of cell membranes especially in the brain and play a role in physio

The purpose of this study was: (a) to assess and to compare anxiety and depression symptoms in mothers of preterm neonates during hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, after discharge, and at the end of the infants' first year of life; and (b) to assess the child's development at 12 months of chronological corrected age (CCA). Thirty-six mothers, with no psychiatric antecedents assessed with the SCID-NP, were evaluated by STAI and BDI. The infants were assessed with Bayley-II Scales. There was a significant decrease in clinical symptoms of state-anxiety in mothers (p = .008), co

BACKGROUND: The mother-infant relationship is critical for child development, but may be compromised among mothers facing multiple vulnerabilities. In Singapore, family structures and caregiving norms are rapidly evolving, and at-risk mothers often experience heightened stress and limited social support.
AIM: To understand how psychosocial and biological factors influence mother-infant emotional availability (EA) and bonding.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 68 at-risk mother-infant dyads drawn from the control arm of a randomized controlled trial in Singapore. Mothers

Special delivery units (SDU) within freestanding pediatric hospitals eliminate transport-associated risks and enable timely subspecialized care for infants with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD). However, outcome data is limited. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of mother-infant dyads with prenatally diagnosed CCHD delivered between 2019 and 2025. We compared outcomes between delivery sites (SDU vs. level III hospitals) and hypothesized that SDU delivery would be associated with improved maternal and infant outcomes. We also assessed how social drivers of health (

BACKGROUND: In a subsequent pregnancy after perinatal death, mothers likely experience anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress. Personalised antenatal care at a specialist clinic supports mothers; however, little is known about their experiences after birth. Mothers may have anxiety and fear postnatally, and face challenges transitioning from specialist antenatal care to standard postpartum care, however this transition remains unstudied.
AIM: To explore mothers' postnatal experiences in a subsequent pregnancy after previously experiencing perinatal death.
METHODS: A qualitativ

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is prevalent in pregnancy, yet oral iron therapies are associated with poor adherence and many intravenous (IV) iron formulations require multiple doses for treatment. Ferric derisomaltose (FDI) is a newer IV iron formulation that is safe and efficacious in non-pregnant individuals, yet pregnancy data is lacking. We evaluated the safety, efficacy, and maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with a single 1000 mg IV dose of FDI in pregnant individuals with IDA. We conducted a prospective, single-arm interventional trial of FDI administered in the second or third t

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems during and after pregnancy such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or addiction are common and can have lifelong implications for both parents and offspring. This review investigates the cost-effectiveness of interventions tackling these problems, assesses the methodological quality of included studies, and indicates suggestions for further research.
METHODS: Thirteen databases were searched for economic evaluations of interventions related to antenatal, perinatal, and postnatal mental health conditions, published between 2000 and

Obstetric violence has recently gained wide recognition and is defined as inappropriate or disrespectful treatment given by medical staff to women throughout the antepartum period, delivery and postpartum. It includes verbal violence, denial of patient autonomy, the practice of unconsented or unnecessary medical procedures, discrimination based on race or ethnic background, and physical violence. The source of obstetric violence has been vastly studied by psycho-sociologists who have conceptualized it as stemming back to ancient gender role theories. In the medical literature, obstetric violen

BACKGROUND: Certain populations are at high risk of experiencing a traumatic event and developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, primary preventive interventions against PTSD are lacking. It is therefore crucial to identify pre-traumatic risk factors, which could be targeted with such interventions. Insomnia may be a good candidate, but studies on civilians are sparse. Furthermore, the mechanisms at stake in the relationship between pre-traumatic insomnia and PTSD symptoms are unclear.
METHODS: This prospective population-based cohort study (n = 1,610) examined the relationship b

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Accumulating evidence from a relatively small number of prospective studies indicates that exposure to prenatal stress profoundly influences the developing human fetus with consequences that persist into childhood and very likely forever.
METHODS: Maternal/fetal dyads are assessed at ∼20, ∼25, ∼31 and ∼36 weeks of gestation. Infant assessments begin 24 h after delivery with the collection of cortisol and behavioral responses to the painful stress of the heel-stick procedure and measures of neonatal neuromuscular maturity. Infant cognitive, neuromotor development, stress and e
