BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the most important environmental risk factor for the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). UV radiation is, however, also vital in the formation of vitamin D in humans. Strict sun protection advised to skin cancer patients may lead to vitamin D deficiency, yet vitamin D may have a protective effect against cancer formation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Tumor angiogenesis has been the subject of intensive research in recent years in many tumor types. Studies involving epithelial skin tumors are few to date. We evaluated tumor angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions of the eyelids using immunohistochemical techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 147 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples. We studied cancerous lesions of the eyelid skin such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous and basosquamous cell carcinoma and pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the association of HLA alleles (ie, HLA-DR1, HLA-DR4, and HLA-DR7) with individuals with skin cancer on the tropical island of Saba. This island was chosen because most of the white population has fair skin and excessive exposure to sunlight, which results in a high prevalence of skin cancer.
DESIGN: HLA typing was performed in 124 white individuals with histologically proven basal cell and/or squamous cell carcinoma and in control subjects. Skin type, the presence of freckling, and the number of actinic keratoses were determined.

Fourteen patients with recurrent malignant tumours of the head and neck were treated with radiofrequency hyperthermia and chemotherapy after conventional therapy had failed. OBJECTIVES: To determine the characteristics of adult-onset autoimmune chorea, and compare paraneoplastic and idiopathic subgroups.
METHODS: Thirty-six adults with autoimmune chorea were identified at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) from 1997 to 2012. Medical record and laboratory data were recorded. Nonparaneoplastic (n = 22) and paraneoplastic cases (n = 14) were compared.
RESULTS: Women accounted for 21 patients (58%). Median age at symptom onset was 67 years (range 18-87 years). We estimated the incidence for Olmsted County was 1.5 per million person-years. Symptom onset was subacute in all.
