Cryptosporidium parvum infection induces autophagy in intestinal epithelial cells.

Autophagy, a process of degradation and recycling of macromolecules and organelles to maintain cellular homeostasis, has also been shown to help eliminate invading pathogens. Conversely, various pathogens including parasites have been shown to modulate/exploit host autophagy facilitating their intracellular infectious cycle. In this regard, Cryptosporidium parvum (CP), a protozoan parasite of small intestine is emerging as a major global health challenge. However, the pathophysiology of cryptosporidiosis is mostly unknown. We have recently demonstrated CP-induced epithelial barrier disruption

Cryptosporidium infection is associated with reduced growth and diarrhoea in goats beyond weaning.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are common parasites of ruminant livestock worldwide. These parasites are associated with diarrhoea outbreaks in young goats (pre-weaning), but the impacts on health and productivity for older goats (post-weaning) are not well understood. Here we show Cryptosporidium faecal shedding is associated with reduced growth and diarrhoea in goats aged approximately 9-15 months. Goats were sampled four times at one-month intervals. Faecal shedding for a range of pathogens were determined using quantitative PCR and sequencing (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Eimeria, Salmonella, Ca

Prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp in calves from a region in New Zealand experiencing intensification of dairying.

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp in calves born during two spring-calving seasons in a rapidly intensif … ofluorescent microscopy was used to screen the faecal samples for Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. The prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp detected in calves in Otago was compared with that previously measured in calves from dairying regions in the Waikato and Manawatu, in the North Island . RESULTS: On average, Giardia and Cryptospor …

[Cell response of rat liver parenchyma to the infection by the intestinal protozoan pathogen Cryptosporidium parvum (Sporozoa, Coccidia)].

In the present work, the authors' previous studies of a "distant action", exerted by an intestinal pathogen (Cryptosporidium parvum) on the liver of experimentally infected baby rats, were extended to include shifts in the quantity of glycogen, protein and nuclear DNA in the host liver at different degrees of infection. One of the outcomes of this work is the discovery of a very quick response of hepatocytes and a high sensitivity of rat liver to parasitic invasion even at a weak intensity of infection. 85-90 h after oocyst feeding to rats, glycogen quantity in their livers was 2.5 times lower

Cecal coccidiosis in Japanese quails (Coturnix Japonica): Eimeria tsunodai identification and comparative prophylactic phytochemotherapy with immune stimulant impact.

BACKGROUND: Among the serious quail diseases is coccidiosis, caused by several Eimeria species, particularly cecal coccidiosis, with conside … e, each group was subdivided into two subgroups. The subgroups, 1B-4B were infected with sporulated oocysts of E. tsunodai (4.1 × 104). RESULTS: The infected group showed a typical cecal lesion of E. tsunodai which was confirmed histopathologically by the presence of different developmental stages in both intracellular lining and cecal content. The alter …

Evaluating performance, intestinal lesions, and immunity related genes in heritage and modern broiler breeds during a necrotic enteritis challenge.

In this comparative study, the differential responses of heritage (ACRB; Athens Canadian Random Bred) and modern (Cobb) broilers to a necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge were evaluated. The design was a 2×2 factorial with breed (ACRB and Cobb) and challenge (non-challenged and NE-challenged) as main factors. On day (d) of hatch, 96 male chicks (48 ACRB and 48 Cobb) were allocated to 4 experimental groups with 8 replicate cages and 3 birds/cage. On d 14, birds in the NE-challenged groups were orally gavaged with 3,000 Eimeria maxima sporulated oocysts followed by 2 doses of ∼1×108 CFU of Clostrid…

The role of species ecology in predicting Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in wild and domesticated mammals globally.

Macroecological approaches can provide valuable insight into the epidemiology of globally distributed, multi-host pathogens. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan that infects any warm-blooded animal, including humans, in almost every habitat worldwide. Toxoplasma gondii infects its hosts through oocysts in the environment, carnivory of tissue cysts within intermediate host prey and vertical transmission. These routes of infection enable specific predictions regarding the ecological and life history traits that should predispose specific taxa to higher exposure and, thus infection rates of T. gondi…
