Incidentally found parotid gland lesion in 18F-FDG PET/CT for staging evaluation of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: remote possibility of metastatic tumor or second primary salivary gland malignancy.

OBJECTIVES: We primarily aimed to evaluate whether parotid incidental lesion (PIL) in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) for staging evaluation of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) would represent a possibility of extrahepatic metastasis or second primary malignancy (SPM). Additionally, we explored the incidence of PIL in HCC patients and examined any associated risk factors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with HCC who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT at our institution from 2010 to 2022. The pathological findings of PILs

Paxillin expression levels are correlated with clinical stage and metastasis in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

AIMS: To investigate the relationship between paxillin expression and clinicopathological features and metastasis in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC). METHODS: A total of 47 SACC were assessed histochemically for paxillin expression. Paxillin immunoreactivity was compared with histological type, clinical stage and distant metastasis. RESULTS: Paxillin expression was identified in 57.45% of SACC as cytoplasmic staining and the expression was correlated with distant metastasis and clinical stage (P < 0.05), but not with histological type. CONCLUSIONS: Our observations indicate that pa

Parotid metastasis--an independent prognostic factor for head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic parotid cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common parotid gland malignancy in New Zealand and Australia. The current AJCC TNM staging system does not account for the extent of nodal metastasis. A staging system that separates parotid (P stage) from neck disease (N stage) has been proposed recently. AIM: To review the outcome of patients with metastatic head and neck cutaneous SCC treated at our multidisciplinary Head and Neck Service using the proposed staging system. METHOD: Consecutive patients were culled from our Head and Neck/Skull Base Database,

Salivary gland 18F-FDG-PET/CT uptake patterns in Sjögren's syndrome and giant cell arteritis patients.

OBJECTIVES: Wide variety in salivary gland 18F-FDG-uptake is observed in the general population. A general consensus about the usefulness of 18F-FDG-PET/CT to detect salivary gland inflammatory conditions, such as in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), is not yet clear. This study aimed to investigate whether there are differences in uptake of 18F-FDG in salivary glands among two autoimmune groups [pSS, giant cell arteritis (GCA)] and a non-autoimmune group (lung cancer). METHODS: PSS patients aged ≥50 years who underwent 18F-FDG-PET/CT were included and age-matched with GCA patients and a non-

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma of parotid gland: Literature review and experience of a dedicated cancer institution in Pakistan.

Purpose: An intraocular hemorrhage is an adverse event that can lead to visual acuity impairment. Antithrombotic therapy with antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants may increase intraocular hemorrhage. However, since their frequency is low, studies on the risk of intraocular hemorrhage with these drugs, especially under combination therapy, are limited. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of intraocular hemorrhages under monotherapy and combination therapy with antiplatelets and anticoagulants by analyzing a large pharmacovigilance database. Methods: Intraocular hemorrhage signals w

The tubarial salivary glands: A potential new organ at risk for radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of previously unnoticed bilateral macroscopic salivary gland locations in the human nasopharynx was suspected after visualization by positron emission tomography/computed tomography with prostate-specific membrane antigen ligands (PSMA PET/CT). We aimed to elucidate the characteristics of this unknown entity and its potential clinical implications for radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The presence and configuration of the PSMA-positive area was evaluated in a retrospective cohort of consecutively scanned patients with prostate or urethral gland cancer (n = 100).

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy in head-and-neck carcinomas: Potential beyond sparing the parotid glands.

Head-and-neck cancer (HNC) is in close proximity to several critical structures. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has the potential of generating highly conformal and concave dose distributions around complex target and is ideally suited for HNC treatment. Conventionally, the focus of IMRT for HNC patients has been on prevention of radiation-induced parotid dysfunction. In the present article, we review the potential of IMRT to reduce the risk of posttreatment aspiration and dysphagia and spare submandibular gland. We also discuss the impact of IMRT on overall survival and quality

A novel method to evaluate salivary flow rates of head and neck cancer patients after radiotherapy: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure used to evaluate salivary flow rate is called sialometry. It can be performed through several techniques, but none appears to be really efficient for post-radiotherapy patients. OBJECTIVE: To adequate sialometry tests for head and neck cancer patients submitted to radiotherapy. METHODS: 22 xerostomic patients post-radiotherapy (total radiation dose ranging from 60 to 70Gy) were included in this study. Ten patients were evaluated using sialometries originally proposed by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and twelve were assessed by our modified methods. Unstimul

Extracapsular dissection in the parapharyngeal space: benefits and potential pitfalls.

The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits and potential pitfalls of transcervical extracapsular dissection in the treatment of parotid gland tumours in the parapharyngeal space. We retrospectively evaluated the records of all patients with parapharyngeal parotid gland lesions treated between 2000 and 2015 by transcervical extracapsular dissection. Patients having revision operations and patients whose records were not complete were excluded, leaving 49 patients in the study. We found acceptable oncological and functional outcomes throughout. Special attention should be paid in case

Retrograde Parotidectomy and facial nerve outcomes: A case series of 44 patients.

PURPOSE: The most common surgical method to remove benign parotid tumors remains the prograde approach. We examined if a retrograde surgical technique offers better outcomes than historical prograde controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review at Stanford Hospital was conducted to identify retrograde parotidectomies between February 2012 and October 2014 that were staffed by the senior author (DS) with resident involvement. Facial nerve (FN) outcomes and other post-surgical parameters were recorded. RESULTS: We identified 44 consecutive cases and found that 18.2% (n=8) of pa

Bilateral parotid oncocytoma with spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage: a rare hypervascular parotid tumor with ASL perfusion.

We present a rare case of bilateral parotid oncocytoma with spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple, bilateral, well-defined masses within the parotid glands with increased vascularity based on arterial spin labeling Magnetic Resonance (MR) perfusion imaging and restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted imaging. During the clinical follow-up, the patient developed extensive hemorrhage from the largest tumor, presumably due to a combination of the hypervascular nature of oncocytoma and hemodialysis.
