Daily sunscreen application and betacarotene supplementation in prevention of basal-cell and squamous-cell carcinomas of the skin: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The use of sunscreens on the skin can prevent sunburn but whether long-term use can prevent skin cancer is not known. Also, there is evidence that oral betacarotene supplementation lowers skin-cancer rates in animals, but there is limited evidence of its effect in human beings. METHODS: In a community-based randomised trial with a 2 by 2 factorial design, individuals were assigned to four treatment groups: daily application of a sun protection factor 15-plus sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hands, and betacarotene supplementation (30 mg per day); sunscreen plus placebo table…

Image analysis of the distribution of turnover rate in the stratum corneum.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A common method to evaluate turnover rate in the stratum corneum is to measure the change in fluorescence intensity with ti … ttern showing a partial, drastic decline in fluorescence intensity occurring on inflamed skin after sunburn. CONCLUSIONS: By analyzing the image generated from a highly sensitive television camera equipped with special filters, we could measure turnover rate of the stratum corneum at any small area. The variations in Types IV and V were believed to be de …

Comparison of Characteristics Influencing Patient Selection of Sunscreen Between Urban and Rural Regions in the United States.

Sunscreen greatly reduces the risk of skin cancer and is recommended as a critical component of sun protection. There is limited literature on patient preferences for sunscreen characteristics. A cross-sectional survey was administered to patients in an urban city and rural area in the United States. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) was consistently the most important factor for patients when selecting sunscreen. However, numerous preferences for sunscreen characteristics vary between the 2 regions, including dermatologist recommendation, texture, ingredients, cost, broad-spectrum, and brand. Gaps

Perceived Relevance of Educative Information on Public (Skin) Health: Results of a Representative, Population-Based Telephone Survey.

Individual skin health attitudes are influenced by various factors, including public education campaigns, mass media, family, and friends. Evidence-based, educative information materials assist communication and decision-making in doctor-patient interactions. The present study aims at assessing the prevailing use of skin health information material and sources and their impact on skin health knowledge, motives to tan, and sun protection. We conducted a questionnaire survey among a representative sample of Austrian residents. Print media and television were perceived as the two most relevant so

Sun protection and low levels of vitamin D: are people concerned?

OBJECTIVE: Recent reports on the association between low serum vitamin D and increased risk of cancer raised concerns about possible adverse effects of primary prevention strategies for skin cancer. To evaluate if these reports may influence peoples' sun protective behavior, knowledge, and attitudes to the impact of sun protection on vitamin D. METHODS: Within a population-based survey in Queensland, Australia (5,611 participants, mean age 50.7 years (range 20-75); 48.2% men), agreement with the statement that sun protection may result in not having enough vitamin D as well as factors associa

Health risk factors among Iowa farmers.

This study compares the prevalence of the health risk factors for chronic disease and injury among farmers with their prevalence among other workers, using data from the Iowa Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. From January 1999 to December 1999, there were 3,620 adults who participated in the survey. This report focuses on the 2,140 subjects who reported they were working. We calculated the percentage with each health risk factor, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and the associated 95% confidence interval (CI), comparing the prevalence of health risks among farmers and other workers. Most

Epidemiology of burns. The burn-prone patient.

Predisposition to burning was identified by history, by conversation with the family, or by physical examination. Factors that decreased the patient's ability to respond appropriately were considered as predisposing. A consecutive series of 155 hospitalized, burned, adult patients was reviewed. Approximately 50 per cent of the entire series showed predisposition to burning; among the more severe burns, this fraction was 57 percent. Among women, predisposition was more prominent in all categories than among men. Among women, those predisposed to burning had larger burns and a greater likelihood

Sunscreen or simulated sweat minimizes the impact of acute ultraviolet radiation on cutaneous microvascular function in healthy humans.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Are ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced increases in skin blood flow independent o … his response. Sun over-exposure may elicit deleterious effects on human skin that are separate from sunburn, and sunscreen or sweat on the skin may provide protection. ABSTRACT: Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) may result in cutaneous vascular dysfunction independent of erythema (skin reddening). Two studies were designed to differentiate changes …

Mediation of improvements in sun protective and skin self-examination behaviours: results from the healthy text study.

OBJECTIVE: Melanoma is on the rise, especially in Caucasian populations exposed to high ultraviolet radiation such as in Australia. This paper examined the psychological components facilitating change in skin cancer prevention or early detection behaviours following a text message intervention. METHODS: The Queensland-based participants were 18 to 42 years old, from the Healthy Text study (N = 546). Overall, 512 (94%) participants completed the 12-month follow-up questionnaires. Following the social cognitive model, potential mediators of skin self-examination (SSE) and sun protection behavio

Auditory analysis of xeroderma pigmentosum 1971-2012: hearing function, sun sensitivity and DNA repair predict neurological degeneration.

To assess the role of DNA repair in maintenance of hearing function and neurological integrity, we examined hearing status, neurological function, DNA repair complementation group and history of acute burning on minimal sun exposure in all patients with xeroderma pigmentosum, who had at least one complete audiogram, examined at the National Institutes of Health from 1971 to 2012. Seventy-nine patients, aged 1-61 years, were diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum (n = 77) or xeroderma pigmentosum/Cockayne syndrome (n = 2). A total of 178 audiograms were included. Clinically significant hearing lo

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation and risk of malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma--a multicentre European case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Three recent studies have reported a decreased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) for high ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre case-control study during 1998-2004 in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, comprising 1518 cases of NHL, 268 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma, 242 cases of multiple myeloma and 2124 population or hospital controls. We collected information on sensitivity to sun and personal exposure to UV radiation in childhood and adulthood via interview, and assessed occupational exposure to UV radiation from the occupational history.

Estimating the global disease burden due to ultraviolet radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND: WHO's global burden of disease studies, undertaken since 1996, apportion the total global disease burden, measured in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), to specific diseases and injuries. Recent assessments of the relative burden due to specific environmental risk factors, plus an understanding of the nature of the risk factor, may guide resource allocation in risk factor management. We report here the global disease burden due to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. METHODS: A systematic literature review identified nine diseases with sufficient evidence of a causal relatio

The impact of the kidskin sun protection intervention on summer suntan and reported sun exposure: was it sustained?

BACKGROUND: Recognition that early sun exposure is an important risk factor for cutaneous melanoma in white populations has led to efforts to reduce children's sun exposure. 'Kidskin' was a non-randomized, school-based sun protection intervention trial in Perth, Western Australia (1995-1999). Its aim was to determine the extent to which such a program could reduce children's sun exposure. METHODS: Kidskin involved 1614 children assigned to one of three groups: a Control, a 'Moderate' and a 'High' intervention group of 14, 11 and 8 schools respectively. The unit of assignment was the school. C

Combined folliculotropic/syringotropic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma without epidermal involvement: report of 2 cases and pathogenic implications.

Exclusive involvement of skin appendages in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is rare, poses significant problems in diagnosis, and may provide insight into mechanisms of T-cell epitheliotropism. We report 2 cases of combined adnexal (folliculotropic/syringotropic) CTCL in which lesions developed only in chronically sun-damaged skin. Although the epidermal layer in both cases was devoid histologically of significant epidermotropism, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction analyses of deeper samples that included involved adnexae confirmed aberrant antigen expression (dominant CD4 pop
