This study assessed the prevalence of exchanging sex for money or drugs among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the 2011 US National HIV Behavioral Surveillance system. Prevalence of HIV, being HIV-positive but unaware (HIV-positive-unaware), risk behaviors and use of services were compared between MSM who did and did not receive money or drugs from one or more casual male partners in exchange for oral or anal sex in the past 12 months. Among 8411 MSM, 7.0 % exchanged sex. MSM who exchanged sex were more likely to be non-Hispanic black, live in poverty, have injected drugs, have multiple cond

BACKGROUND: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection worldwide. HPV is highly prevalent in sexually active men who have sex with men (MSM) and has been associated with anal cancer, penile cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer.
METHODS: From March to September 2011, we conducted a cross-sectional study of HPV prevalence among MSM above age 18 years. Participants were recruited using respondent driven sampling at Clinica Cayetano Heredia. All participants provided anal, genital, and oral samples for HPV DNA testing, and blood for HIV and HPV antib

To describe homosexual men who continue to engage in unprotected oral and anal sex, 601 men who attended three urban STD clinics and who had engaged in these behaviors with a male partner in the previous 4 months were interviewed regarding their sexual and drug-use behaviors. Although approximately one fourth of participants had engaged in 1 to 2 episodes of unprotected anal sex, more than 20% reported engaging in greater than 23 episodes. Higher frequency of anal sex was associated with lower condom use rates. Although 50% had primary relationships, less than 22% had sex with just one partner

This study reports the results of a comprehensive online survey of 1,612 current or former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many of whom engaged in psychotherapy to cope with (i.e., understand, accept, or change) their same-sex attractions. Data obtained from written and quantitative responses showed that therapy was initiated over a very wide age range and continued for many years. However, counseling was largely ineffective; less than 4% reported any modification of core same-sex erotic attraction. Moreover, 42% reported that their change-oriented therapy was not a

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in men who have sex with men (MSM) at the individual level, but data on population-level impact are lacking. We examined whether rapid, targeted, and high-coverage roll-out of PrEP in an MSM epidemic would reduce HIV incidence in the cohort prescribed PrEP and state-wide in Australia's most populous state, New South Wales.
METHODS: The Expanded PrEP Implementation in Communities-New South Wales (EPIC-NSW) study is an implementation cohort study of daily co-formulated tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine as HIV PrEP

Previous research has failed to identify a consistent relationship between HIV disease severity and depression. However, HIV/AIDS can lead to substantial physical limitations in those with advanced disease, which may influence mood. This study examined the extent to which HIV disease severity and physical limitations were associated with depressive symptoms in 49 HIV-infected men at the final stages of a 5-year prospective study. No differences were found in depression or quality of life among men who were asymptomatic, symptomatic, or diagnosed with AIDS. Forty-three percent of subjects repor

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people have a higher prevalence of mental health conditions than heterosexual and cisgender people, and report poor experiences of accessing mental health services. The COVID-19 pandemic may have had detrimental impacts on socially disadvantaged groups, such as LGBTQ+ people, and their mental healthcare access. This study aimed to understand LGBTQ+ experiences of mental health and accessing mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Topic-guided qualitative interviews were conducted with twelve LGBTQ+ people

INTRODUCTION: Although often treated as separate social issues, youth homelessness and sex trafficking overlap as homelessness can be both a cause and a consequence of being trafficked. The primary goal of this scoping review is to understand the existing evidence on interventions for youth who have experienced homelessness and/or sex trafficking. We will identify potential differences in intervention design based on gender and Indigeneity and for youth who identify as two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer.
METHODS: We will use the scoping review framework originally

Mpox re-emerged globally in 2022, disproportionately affecting gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). In 2024, Thailand became the first Asian country to detect Clade Ib Mpox, prompting urgent decisions on deploying a limited supply of 3000 vaccine doses. However, evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different vaccine allocation and behavioural strategies in this context remains scarce. We developed a deterministic compartmental model of Mpox transmission among high- and low-risk GBMSM, calibrated to Thailand's national surveillance data (January 2023-May 2025). Th

BACKGROUND: Across populations, risky drinking has been demonstrated to increase HIV risk behaviors. This is of special concern for sexually minoritized cisgender men and gender-diverse young adults (aged 18-34 years), who report greater incidence of hazardous drinking (as defined by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption criteria) and HIV compared to their heterosexual and/or cisgender peers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine alcohol perceptions, patterns of use, and the role that anti-LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) policies and discrimination p

INTRODUCTION: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) demonstrates the value of biomedical interventions as part of combination prevention. Some gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) use antibiotics to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), primarily as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). We aimed to understand variations in awareness and use of HIV PrEP and STI PEP/PrEP among people attending specialist sexual health services (SHSs) in England.
METHODS: We collected data from 1732 SHS attendees aged >16 years in London and the East of England using an online questionnai

Rationale: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, with most cases attributable to cigarette smoking. People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) are more likely to smoke; however, there are limited interventions to support lung cancer prevention in this community. Through prior community-engaged work, we developed a patient navigation intervention to support smoking cessation and lung cancer screening (LCS) for LGBTQ+ adults. Objectives: To conduct a prospective pilot study of the patient navigation intervention to evaluate patient satisfac

HIV self-sampling and -testing (HIVSS/ST) reduces testing barriers and potentially reaches populations who may not test otherwise. In the Netherlands, at-home HIV tests became commercially available around 2016, but data on user experiences are limited. This study aimed to explore characteristics of users and their experiences with HIVSS/ST. In 2022 and 2023, a survey was distributed among users of one online commercial provider and one community-based provider; either users ordered a commercial online HIVSS/ST or they sought a free-of-charge HIVST via the community-based provider. INTRODUCTION: Limited research has characterized poly-tobacco use (ie, use of at least two nicotine/tobacco products) among adults with sexual minoritized (SM) identities (ie, lesbian, gay, and bisexual). Additional work is needed to examine disparities in use by sexual orientation identity and determine whether these disparities differ by sex. We aimed to examine the prevalence of tobacco product use and poly-tobacco use by sexual orientation identity and sex among a nationally representative sample of US adults.
AIMS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from 32 352 adult respondents (34.9% 18-24 ye
