Radiotherapy of sinonasal cancers: 2025 update.

Sinonasal cancers, including tumours of the nasal cavity, ethmoid, maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses, account for 3 to 5 % of head and neck malignancies. While the majority are carcinomas, other histologic types such as mucosal melanomas, sarcomas, and lymphomas may also occur. These tumours often present with non-specific symptoms and exhibit a heterogeneous prognosis. The Réseau d'expertise français des cancers ORL rares (the French expert network for rare head and neck cancers), accredited by the Institut national du cancer (the French national cancer institute), is responsible for m

Surgical approach of ectopic maxillary third molar avulsion: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ectopic maxillary third molars (EMTM) are extracted mainly by the Caldwell-Luc technique but also by nasal endoscopy. There is currently no consensus on the treatment of this eruption and its management is heterogeneous and multidisciplinary. Two literature searches were performed with no time restrictions via Pubmed. In the first, we used the keywords "ectopic AND third molar" and in the second the keywords "dentigerous cyst AND ectopic third molar". For both articles, epidemiological, symptomatic, radiological and surgical data were recorded. Overall, 33 eligible articles were identified inv

The use of balloon dilation in revision sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated a dramatic increase in the use of balloon sinus dilation (BSD) in the United States. However, the use of BSD specifically in revision sinus surgery has not been investigated. This study addresses the question of how BSD is utilized as a tool in revision sinus surgery. METHODS: Data from MarketScan (Truven Health) over a 5-year period (2012-2016) were analyzed. Patients who underwent a sinus procedure with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up were included. RESULTS: A total of 62,304 patients met inclusion criteria; 6847 (10.99%) underwent revision. A

Normal Anatomy, Histology, and Spontaneous Pathology of the Nasal Cavity of the Cynomolgus Monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

The evaluation of inhalation studies in monkeys is often hampered by the scarcity of published information on the relevant nasal anatomy and pathology. We examined nasal cavities of 114 control cynomolgus monkeys from 11 inhalation studies evaluated 2008 to 2013, in order to characterize and document the anatomic features and spontaneous pathology. Compared to other laboratory animals, the cynomolgus monkey has a relatively simple nose with 2 unbranched, dorsoventrally stacked turbinates, large maxillary sinuses, and a nasal septum that continues into the nasopharynx. The vomeronasal organ is

Three Synchronous Atypical Metastases of Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma to the Maxillary Gingiva, Scalp and the Distal Phalanx of the Fifth Digit: A Case Report.

Oral cavity metastasis of malignant tumors is extremely rare and accounts for only 1% of all malignant oral tumors. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can metastasize to any part of the body, with a 15% risk of metastasis to the head and neck region when the disease is disseminated and a 1% risk when it is not. RCC also is the third most common infraclavicular neoplasm that metastasizes to the oral cavity, after lung carcinoma in men and breast carcinoma in women. In the maxillofacial region, the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are the most commonly affected sites, followed by the oral cavity. This

Medially originated inverted papilloma.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of medially originated inverted papilloma (MOIP) and compare them with laterally originated inverted papilloma (LOIP). METHODS: A retrospective review of the charts for a total of 83 patients with sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) was conducted. Tumors originating from the nasal septum or the turbinates were categorized as MOIP, whereas tumors originating from the four sinuses were categorized as LOIP. RESULTS: Twenty-eight (34%) and 55 (66%) cases were categorized as MOIP and LOIP. MOIP from the middle turbinate be

Methods for measurement/evaluation of the maxillary and frontal sinus ostial function.

Several test methods for evaluation of the maxillary and frontal sinus ostial function have been described. The test methods can be divided up as follows. Invasive methods: Measurements during spontaneous breathing and measurements during artificial pressure application. Non-invasive methods: Methods with pure stable xenon and xenon133. The most physiological invasive method is measurement during spontaneous nasal breathing and simultaneous recording of the pressure difference over the ostium and air flow through the ostium. Hereby, the ostial resistance can be calculated and the equivalent os

[Wegener's granulomatosis--a disease of many faces].

We describe a case of Wegener's granulomatosis. The first symptoms included severe headache subsiding only after administration of dexamethasone. Despite a great number of diagnostic tests involving CT and MR of the head, the cause of the headache remained unknown. Because a chest x-ray revealed a nodule in the right lung, the patient was sent to our Clinic. Reevaluation of CT and MR pointed to a massive ethmoid sinusitis. 7-days' course of antibiotics and corticosteroids induced remission of the lung nodule. Several diagnoses were made: neoplasm, bacterial ethmoid sinusitis, trigeminal neurit

Maxillary sinus classification for sex and age using 23 artificial intelligence architectures.

Studies have relied on conventional imaging and traditional morphometric analyses of the maxillary sinuses (MS) for sex and age estimation, but little is known about the performance of deep learning models. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) in classifying individuals by sex and age through the radiographic assessment of the MS. Panoramic radiographs of individuals aged 6–22.99 years were sampled. Twenty-one CNNs and two Transformer-based architectures were tested. Tasks consisted of binary sex and age (≤

Perineural Spread in COVID-Associated Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis: A Single Tertiary Care Center Study.

BACKGROUND: Infection with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) has increased in the coronavirus disease (COVID) era, especially in diabetic patients. Rapid extension from the nose and paranasal sinuses to the orbit and brain is noted by osseous erosion, vascular invasion, and infrequently documented perineural spread. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of perineural spread in ROCM cases and evaluate the common neural pathways involved, which help in prognosticating and triaging patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We evaluated demographic, clinical, and radiological findings of 270 pati

Osteomyelitis of the Jaw in COVID-19 Patients: A Rare Condition With a High Risk for Severe Complications.

Osteomyelitis of the jaw is an uncommon infection that arises from the flora of the oral cavity or sinuses and affects immunocompromised and polymorbid patients. Treatment includes surgical debridement and long regiments of broad-spectrum antibiotics. We present three cases of complicated jaw osteomyelitis presented with concurrent COVID-19 infection, including only two reported cases of odontogenic COVID-related osteomyelitis. The two mandibular cases were patients in their 30s with no comorbidities. The first case was an asymptomatic COVID-19-positive patient who developed an odontogenic inf

Carcinoma with Triphasic Differentiation Arising from Inverted Papilloma in Sinonasal Sinus: A Rare Case with Molecular Characterization.

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SNEC) is a rare subset of tumors in the sinonasal sinus. Combined tumors are exceedingly rare. Here, we describe a 65-year-old male with a mixed tumor of SNEC and sarcomatoid carcinoma arising in an inverted papilloma, containing squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SqCCis) in the sinonasal sinus. We evaluated the molecular characteristics of the two separate carcinoma components using next-generation sequencing. The patient presented with a nasal obstruction. Computed tomography showed a mass infiltrating the right ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. An excisional

Extraoral anatomy in CBCT – a literature review. Part 1: Nasoethmoidal region.

Cone beam computed tomography has become a widely used imaging technique for dental indications. Depending on the selected size of the field of view, anatomical structures outside the dentomaxillary complex become visible. As a consequence, the clinician must be able to interpret also those anatomical regions. In this article, the anatomy of the nasoethmoidal region is presented based on a literature review. The nose is characterized by the nasal septum and the superior, middle, and inferior conchae. The turbinates may be pneumatized (concha bullosa), mainly the middle concha. The ethmoid bone
