BACKGROUND/AIM: We report our experience with the use of octreotide as primary or adjunctive therapy in children with various gastrointestinal disorders.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A pharmacy database identified patients who received octreotide for gastrointestinal diseases. Indications for octreotide use, dosing, effectiveness, and adverse events were evaluated by chart review.

Trisomy 13 is a very rare and lethal autosomal chromosomal malformation syndrome. Its incidence is 1/12,000 births. In this paper, we present a new trisomy 13 case associated with unusual and undescribed findings. This patient was the first child of unrelated parents with advanced maternal and paternal age, at 36 and 38 years, respectively. Unfortunately, the parents did not accept the prenatal diagnosis. In developed countries, intestinal volvulus in children is most frequently due to malrotation. To review the experience in Nigeria, a retrospective analysis of 28 patients managed over 25 years at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria, was undertaken. The causes of congenital hydrocephalus vary widely and have an important effect in determining the future counseling of affected cases. We analyzed the postmortem findings of 49 autopsies diagnosed as hydrocephalus to find the causes and related conditions. The cases were collected during the last 10 years (1981-1990). Effects of the ionophoric anticoccidial agent monensin on glucose and amino acid absorption were investigated in young broiler chickens. Chicks housed in cages with wire floors were fed a practical diet containing 0 or 121 ppm monensin for 2 to 3 weeks prior to measurement of nutrient absorption. Omphalomesenteric duct remnants (ODR) including Meckel diverticula often present with symptoms of bowel obstruction. Their histologic features are varied and include heterotopic gastrointestinal mucosa and/or pancreatic tissue within the wall. Primary malignant tumors of the small bowel are uncommon and are often diagnosed at an advanced stage. A 10 year survey (1967 to 1977) of the clinical records at one hospital revealed 39 cases of primary malignant tumors of the small bowel. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain (89.7 percent) and weight loss (77 percent). Six patients presented with complications of enterovesical fistula, bleeding and perforation. Preoperative diagnosis was suspected in 27 cases (69.2 percent). Adenocarcinoma was the most common tumor, followed by carcinoid tumor, lymphoma, leiomyosarcoma and melanoma.

White Pekin ducklings were injected with serum, lymphoid cells, or both, derived from donor birds which were immune to reinfection by the schistosome trematode, Trichobilharzia ocellata. Ducklings receiving serum and/or cells from susceptible birds, and untreated ducklings, served as controls.
