A 53-year-old woman visited us for a neurological consultation before her liver transplantation. She had a history of primary biliary cirrhosis that began at 37 years of age. She showed falling episodes and met with a traffic accident at 52 years old. Since then, her symptoms had worsened. The neurological examination showed masked face, rigidity on bilateral arms and legs, and lack of balance. Her Mini-Mental State Examination Score was 28/30, but she suffered from loss of memory and had trouble with executive function in detailed examinations. Her T(1) weighted image showed hyperintensity in

Bipolar disorder (BD) is not only an endogenous condition. Severe negative life events have been shown to influence the development of the first episode and lifetime course of BD. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and incapacitating mental condition that affect a significant proportion of the general population at some time in their lives. The concomitant presence of BD and PTSD has been shown to be more frequent than previously suggested and psychotic patients with trauma histories have a tendency to present more severe symptoms and are more proned to present substance use diso

Prolonged alcohol consumption is associated with a variety of neuropsychiatric conditions, including the dense amnesic disorder known as Korsakoff's syndrome. Korsakoff's syndrome is frequently diagnosed in alcoholics after an episode of acute thiamin deficiency. The accepted view within the medical literature is that the etiology of this disorder lies in thiamin deficiency or Wernicke's encephalopathy. However, examination of the published reports of pure thiamin deficiency unaccompanied by chronic and excessive consumption of alcohol shows that, in this group of patients, the rate of progres

Neuropathological examination was carried out on a patient aged 37 years who had suffered from Wolfram syndrome. Atrophy of the olfactory bulbs and tracts, atrophy of the optic nerves and chiasm, loss of neurons in the lateral geniculate nuclei mainly affecting the small cell layers, atrophy of the superior colliculus, loss of fibers in the cochlear nerve and mild loss of neurons in the cochlear nuclei and inferior colliculus, mild olivopontocerebellar atrophy, and demyelination of the pyramidal tracts were the main neuropathological findings. These correlated with anosmia, loss of vision, los

Hypoglycaemia is the most common complication affecting people with Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Its onset is characterized by symptoms which include sweating, tremor, palpitations, loss of concentration and tiredness. As part of a research project to investigate the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia we have developed an ambulatory system to monitor and record pulsatile changes in blood flow, pulse interval, body temperature and skin impedance. The system uses a pocket computer (Atari Portfolio) to collect and store the data on a memory card. The analogue system consists of two thermo

An anomalous left pulmonary artery causing tracheobronchial obstruction is a rare malformation seen in infancy. Sixty-four cases have been described in the literature, with 17 survivors with or without surgical therapy. We reviewed the literature and the 5 cases seen at The Children's Memorial Hospital during the past 20 years. Three of these patients survived, 2 of whom have not been previously reported. The main clinical features are progressive respiratory distress, cyanosis, and apneic episodes resulting from obstruction of the lower trachea and bronchi by an anomalous left pulmonary arter

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Slow-wave sleep (SWS) is vital for brain health, memory, and emotional resilience. Slow-wave activity (SWA) reflects homeostatic sleep pressure, which dissipates across successive sleep cycles. Impaired SWA dissipation has been linked to depression. We examined whether reduced SWA dissipation is associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression in healthy conscripts.
METHODS: Seventy conscripts (67 males, aged 18-24) undergoing compulsory military service participated in overnight polysomnography. SWA dissipation was assessed by comparing normalized delta (0.5-4.0 Hz) elect

Alcohol addiction may begin in young adults through binge drinking (BD) with its frequency as key criterion. In rodents, BD impairs memory and hippocampal synaptic plasticity on the short term and induced neuroinflammation. Memory impairments may persist into adulthood, whereas long-lasting disturbances in hippocampus synaptic plasticity have not been documented. Moreover, the impact of BD frequency on such disturbances and the potential of anti-inflammatory agents to reverse BD-induced alterations remain unclear. Using hippocampal slices from male rats subjected to eight binge-like episodes d

Beck observed overgeneralised thinking as a key vulnerability factor for excessive self-blame/-criticism in major depressive disorder (MDD). Whilst the contribution of reduced access to specific autobiographical memory episodes has often been considered, the role of more abstract semantic memory systems remains elusive. Here, we investigated the individual ability to differentiate between the meaning of abstract social concepts when interpreting behaviour (e.g. "critical" vs "fault-finding") and its contribution to vulnerability to self-blaming biases and MDD using a previously developed cogni

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in intermittent reductions or complete cessation of airflow. These interruptions reduce oxygen saturation and disrupt normal sleep architecture, frequently resulting in daytime fatigue and adverse health outcomes. Recent research has provided increasing evidence that OSAS may be associated with neuroinflammation, defined as inflammation within the brain and nervous system. Such neuroinflammation may contribute to the dev

BACKGROUND: Blackout drinking, or alcohol-induced memory loss during a drinking occasion, is associated with additional negative alcohol-related outcomes. Brief motivational interventions targeting higher-risk alcohol use behavior have largely ignored blackout drinking. Including personalized information on blackout drinking could maximize intervention impact. To move toward incorporating content on blackout drinking in prevention and intervention materials, it is imperative to understand individual-level differences in blackout drinking. The current study aimed to identify latent profiles of

BACKGROUND: Wheezing is common in younger children and often related to viral infection. It is lack of reliable indicators for asthma prediction.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between circulation CD4+CCR6+CRTh2+ memory Th2 cells and asthma diagnosis in wheezing children.
METHODS: A prospective study was performed in children under 5 years old presented with wheezing or at last one episode of documented wheezing history. After inclusion, the level of serum allergen-specific serum IgE (sIgE) and circulating CD4+CCR6+CRTh2+cells were detected. The patients' personal and family histori

AIM: Regulatory T cells (Treg) are important in mediating immune tolerance and outcomes of allotransplantation. CD4+ CD25+ CD39+ co-expression identifies memory Treg; CD4+ CD25- CD39+ memory T effectors. We sought to determine CD4+ CD25+/- CD39+ expression from the peripheral blood of patients with end stage renal failure, following transplantation and during episodes of acute cellular rejection.
METHODS: CD4+ T cells were isolated from peripheral blood leucocytes and analysed for CD25 and CD39 expression by flow cytometry. Treg suppressive function was measured by suppression of autologous e

It is a common and well-known fact that infants and preschool children undergo frequent episodes of upper respiratory tract infections. The majority of these children do not have a recognized immunodeficiency. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of frequent upper respiratory tract infections on cellular immunity, using peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and activation markers as defining parameters. The study group consisted of 16 children (aged 2-6 years) with frequent upper respiratory tract infections; 30 age-matched healthy children served as controls. Peripheral bloo

A common observation in neurological practice is parkinsonism with concomitant cognitive decline, an association that usually arises from various underlying degenerative or vascular conditions, most of which are untreatable. An elderly woman with no history of psychiatric disease presented complaining of memory and cognitive impairment serious enough to interfere with daily life activities over the preceding year. She soon developed a predominantly left-sided tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia. She had had only 2 years of formal education. Neuropsychological assessment showed poor performance o

BACKGROUND: Depression in adolescents is a growing public health concern, with 3.5 million youth in the United States experiencing a depressive episode each year. When symptoms emerge in early adolescence, they can have lasting psychological, physical, and cognitive consequences, highlighting the urgent need for proactive intervention. Insufficient sleep-characterized by short duration, irregular timing, and poor quality-is bidirectionally linked to depression and associated with impaired cognitive performance.
OBJECTIVE: This protocol provides the map for a study tracking sleep patterns and

Mnemonic discrimination-the ability to distinguish between existing memories and similar new inputs-supports accurate memory in the face of interference (e.g., in a card game, recognizing that the card you are currently seeing, the King of Hearts, is distinct from the King of Diamonds you encountered earlier in the same hand). Although hippocampal pattern separation has been emphasized as a key mechanism for this process, recent theoretical frameworks and empirical findings suggest that surrounding medial temporal lobe and cortical regions also contribute by resolving interference. BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of bipolar disorder and aspects of neurodevelopmental disorders present unique challenges and opportunities in understanding the formation and maintenance of selfhood and worldview in psychopathology. Traditional cognitive models often overlook the narrative and phenomenological dimensions of patient experience, particularly how autobiographical narration and emotionally charged worldviews mediate lived experience.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore (i) how worldviews are shaped by emotion and memory in psychiatric illness, and (ii) how narrative forms provide exis

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence shows that cognitive deficits are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the specific differences in cognitive impairment and brain functional alterations between first-episode depression (FED) and recurrent major depression (RMD) remain unclear, as do the relationships among these factors.
METHODS: A total of 43 RMD and 41 FED patients were included in this study. All the patients underwent examinations of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), event-related potential (ERP) measurements, and a series of standar
