Factors associated with skin cancer prevention practices in a multiethnic population.

A better understanding of factors influencing sun protection practices can improve the design and evaluation of skin cancer prevention programs. These data are from a cross-sectional survey of 756 parents with children in Grades 1 through 3, and 176 recreation program staff members in a multiethnic population in Hawaii. Questionnaires asked about skin cancer prevention practices (sunscreen use, covering up, shade seeking), knowledge, benefits and barriers, policies, and staff norms for prevention. The most important correlates of children's prevention practices were their parents' sun protecti

Sun-Protection Behavior, Pubertal Development and Menarche: Factors Influencing the Melanocytic Nevi Development-The Results of an Observational Study of 1,512 Children.

Observational studies consistently show that melanocytic nevus prevalence increases with age and that phenotypic traits are significantly associated with nevus count in children. An observational study of 1,512 children and adolescents from 2010 to 2013 was conducted. Study dermatologists counted the full body, arm, and facial nevi of each participant. Children and their parents were asked to complete a survey to gather data on personal characteristics, pubertal development, and early-life sun exposure. The main aim of the study was to establish pediatric nevus prevalence and its relationship

Nanoencapsulation of coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E acetate protects against UVB radiation-induced skin injury in mice.

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of producing semisolid formulations based on nanocapsule suspensions containing the association of the coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E acetate by adding gellan gum (2%) to the suspensions. Furthermore, we studied their application as an alternative for the treatment of inflammation induced by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. For this, an animal model of injury induced by UVB-radiation was employed. All semisolids presented pH close to 5.5, drug content above 95% and mean diameter on the nanometric range, after redispersion in water. Besides, the semisol

[Sun exposure behaviors and knowledge among Chileans].

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet light exposure has a pathogenic effect on the development of skin cancer, whose prevalence increases worldwide. In Chile and the rest of the world, preventive educational campaigns are carried out to change high risk sun exposure behaviors. AIM: To study the behavior of the Chilean population towards skin cancer prevention and to identify erroneous preventive practices and concepts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey containing 17 questions about sun exposure behaviors, photoprotective measures and knowledge about ultraviolet radiation and skin cancer was used. It was app

A randomized intervention study of sun protection promotion in well-child care.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the behavioral impact of a skin cancer prevention program in which health care providers delivered advice and materials to parents of infants over a 3-year period from 1998 to 2001. METHODS: Fourteen offices of a large managed care organization in Colorado were randomly assigned to the intervention or control groups. 728 infants and their parents were recruited within 6 months of birth. At intervention offices, health care providers attended orientation sessions, prompts for delivering sun protection advice were placed in medical records, and parents received

A Survey-Based Comparison of Sun Safety Practices in a Representative Cohort of the General Public Versus Attendees of a Skin Cancer Screening.

A large proportion of data on photoprotective practices is yielded from free skin cancer screenings. However, the sun safety practices of populations who seek these skin cancer screenings may differ from the general public. To examine differences in skin cancer prevention practices and risk factors, we surveyed pedestrians at six locations in Washington, DC (public group, n=285) and attendees of a free skin cancer screening (screening group, n=144) using an IRB-approved survey. The screening group was older and included more individuals with fair skin than the public group. Respondents from th

Association of Multiple Melanocytic Naevi with Education, Sex and Skin Type. A Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study with 46 Years Follow-up.

Having multiple melanocytic naevi (< 50 naevi) is one of the strongest risk factors for melanoma. However, the epidemiology in adults is unclear. This comprehensive dermatological status investigation of 1,932 birth-cohort study cases aged 46 years analysed the prevalence of multiple melanocytic naevi and their association with sex, socioeconomic status (education) in childhood and adulthood, skin type and sunbathing habits. The prevalence of multiple melanocytic naevi was 11.6% (223/1,930). Higher education (odds ratio (OR) 2.11, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.51-2.96), male sex (OR 1.48,

Factors associated with photoprotection by body clothing coverage, particularly in non-summer months, among a New Zealand community sample.

Clothing coverage is important for reducing skin cancer risk, but may also influence vitamin D sufficiency, so associated plausible predictors require investigation. Volunteers (18 to 85 years), with approximately equal numbers by sex and four ethnicity groups, were recruited in cities from two latitude bands: Auckland (36.9°S) and Dunedin (45.9°S). Baseline questionnaire, anthropometric and spectrophotometer skin colour data were collected and weather data obtained. Percent body coverage was calculated from eight week diary records. Potential independent predictors (unadjusted p < 0.25) were

Time spent outdoors at midday and children's body mass index.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the Kidskin sun protection intervention increased children's body mass index by reducing the time spent outdoors at midday. METHODS: The Kidskin sun protection intervention involved 1614 Australian school children assigned to 1 of 3 groups: a control group, a moderate-intervention group, or a high-intervention group. Schools in the control group received the standard health curriculum and schools in the intervention groups received a multicomponent intervention. Outcomes included time spent outdoors and nevus development (a marker of melanoma risk). Height

Nitric oxide appears to be a mediator of solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression in humans.

Topical application of NG-methyl-L-arginine and 2,2'-dipyridyl were used to examine the respective roles of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species in solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression in humans in vivo. Immunosuppression was studied using a nickel contact hypersensitivity recall model. Ultraviolet radiation dose-responses were generated to determine the extent to which NG-methyl-L-arginine and 2,2'-dipyridyl affected the immune response. NG-methyl-L-arginine but not 2,2'-dipyridyl protected the immune system from ultraviolet radiation-induced suppression. Both N

Cancers in Australia attributable to exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation and prevented by regular sunscreen use.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the proportion and numbers of cancers occurring in Australia attributable to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and the proportion and numbers prevented by regular sun protection factor (SPF) 15+ sunscreen use. METHODS: We estimated the population attributable fraction (PAF) and numbers of melanomas and keratinocyte cancers (i.e. basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas) due to exposure to ambient UVR resulting from residing in Australia versus residing in the UK (for melanoma) or Scandinavia (for keratinocyte cancers). We also estimated the prevented fraction

Certification of sun protection practices in a German child day-care centre improves children's sun protection--the 'SunPass' pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and malignant melanoma (CMM) are among the most common malignancies in the white population. The major risk factor for those malignancies is ultraviolet radiation (UV) causing directly DNA damage and promoting the development of skin cancer. It is suggested that the exposure to UV during childhood elevates an individual's lifetime risk of developing skin cancer more than exposure in adulthood. Since an increasing number of children spend the time of the most intense UV in a day-care centre, it seems an excellent place for establishing primary skin can

Sun-safe practices in U.S. youth and their parents: role of caregiver on youth sunscreen use.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited understanding of the social influences, such as the role of parents on youth sun-safe practices, that may reduce the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. METHODS: This study examined the degree of correlation in sun-safe practices between youth and their parents and assessed independent parental factors of youth sunscreen use in a 1998 cross-sectional, population-based telephone survey of U.S. youth (11- to 18-year-olds) and their parents/caregivers (N=1192 pairs of youth and parents). RESULTS: Sunscreen-use practices between youth and their parents we

Perceived relevance of educative information on public (skin) health: a cross-sectional questionnaire survey.

OBJECTIVES: Unprotected leisure time exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial tanning beds is the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma, a malignant skin cancer with increasing incidences over the past decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of skin health information provided by several sources and different publishing issues on knowledge, risk perception, and sun protective behavior of sunbathers. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among Austrian residents (n=563) spending leisure time outdoors in August 2

A comparison of patterns of sun protection during beach holidays and everyday outdoor activities in a population sample of young German children.

BACKGROUND: Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main effective measure for preventing skin cancer. Educational campaigns targeting sun protection have been focused either on behaviour on the beach during the summer holiday alone, or during everyday outdoor activities of the children. Little is known about the comparison between these different settings. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether parents apply similar protective measures to reduce UV exposure for their young children in different outdoor environments. METHODS: Families (n = 2619) with children aged 3-6 years (response:
