Use of resorbable plates and screws in pediatric facial fractures.

PURPOSE: The use of resorbable plates and screws for fixation of pediatric facial fractures is both well tolerated and effective. It enables realignment and stable positioning of rapidly healing fracture segments while obviating any future issues secondary to long-term metal retention. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-four pediatric facial fractures were treated over a 10-year period at our institution using differing techniques of polymeric bone fixation. Twenty-nine mandible fractures in patients under the age of 10 (age range, 6 months to 8 years) were treated. Displaced fractures of the symphy

[Case report. Job syndrome as an unusual finding in a pediatric patient].

BACKGROUND: Job Syndrome is a primary immunodeficiency disorder with an incidence of 1 per million people. It is characterized by elevated IgE levels, eosinophilia, recurrent infections (bacterial and fungal), eczematous dermatitis, musculoskeletal and vascular anomalies. Diagnosis is based on IgE > 1000 IU/ml and eosinophilia. Treatment is multidisciplinary, including bone marrow transplantation, stem cell therapy, and human immunoglobulin. CASE REPORT: Evolution: We present a 13-year-old male with a history of asthma and atopic dermatitis treated with subcutaneous immunotherapy since 2016. H

Traumatic Posterior Fossa Acute Epidural Hematoma with Frontal Hemorrhagic Contusion in a 25-Year-Old Male: Immediate Craniotomy and Successful Recovery.

Traumatic posterior fossa extradural hematoma (PFEDH) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. It is characterized by the accumulation of blood between the dura mater and occipital bone, leading to compression of the brainstem. We report the case of a 25-year-old male who presented to the emergency department following a fall, exhibiting confusion and a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 14. Imaging revealed a significant acute epidural hematoma with associated mass effect, frontal hemorrhagic contusion, and right transverse sinus rupture. The initial hematoma volume was calculated

Pediatric Orbital Roof Intradiploic Meningioma Operated by Eyebrow Incision.

INTRODUCTION: Primary intradiploic meningiomas account for <1% of all osseous calvarial lesions and are categorized as bone tumors. They are frequently observed in the frontotemporal region of the calvarium, anterior cranial fossa, and orbit. We present a case of intradiploic meningioma of the orbital roof, which is rarely observed in the pediatric age-group; it was surgically treated with a unique minimally invasive approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old male with chief complaints of headache on the right side for approximately 1 year was presented to our clinic. Cranial MRI revealed an

Sublaminar polyester bands for the correction of idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis.

Recent literature suggests that sublaminar bands (SB) can provide good coronal plane correction, comparable to pedicle screw constructs, as well as good correction in the sagittal plane, even in patients with preoperative hypokyphosis; comparable results have been reported in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and in patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS). Two types of SB constructs can be performed: the band-only construct, indicated for non-ambulatory patients with NMS, and the hybrid construct indicted for ambulatory patients with NMS and for patients with AIS. SB are

Dandy-Walker-Like Malformation in a Free-Ranging Atlantic Harbour Seal Pup (Phoca vitulina concolor).

An 88.5 cm long, 12.9 kg, 3-week-old stranded male Atlantic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina concolor) presented with cerebellar ataxia, delayed postural reactions, hyperaesthesia and nystagmus. The skull was enlarged and domed. Ultrasound through a persistent fontanelle in the frontal bone revealed hydrocephalus. Magnetic resonance imaging showed diffuse enlargement of the ventricular system, an absent cerebellar vermis, hypertrophy of the choroid plexus of the fourth ventricle and enlargement of the caudal fossa. Throughout rehabilitation, the seal failed to achieve milestones critical for succe…

Extraoral anatomy in CBCT – a literature review. Part 1: Nasoethmoidal region.

Cone beam computed tomography has become a widely used imaging technique for dental indications. Depending on the selected size of the field of view, anatomical structures outside the dentomaxillary complex become visible. As a consequence, the clinician must be able to interpret also those anatomical regions. In this article, the anatomy of the nasoethmoidal region is presented based on a literature review. The nose is characterized by the nasal septum and the superior, middle, and inferior conchae. The turbinates may be pneumatized (concha bullosa), mainly the middle concha. The ethmoid bone

Traumatic Optic Neuropathy - Case Report with Discussion on Diagnostic Procedures and Therapy.

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a serious vision threatening condition that can be caused by ocular or head trauma. Indirect damage to the optic nerve is the most common form of TON occurring in 0.5% to 5% of all closed head trauma cases. Although the degree of visual loss after indirect TON may vary, approximately 50% of all patients are left with 'light perception' or 'no light perception' vision, making TON a significant cause of permanent vision loss. We present a 47-year-old male patient with a history of right eye keratoconus following a motorcycle crash. Visual acuity was of 'counti

Prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida: from intracranial translucency to intrauterine surgery.

Accurate and timely prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida (SB) is a major goal of modern antenatal care. Prenatal screening for open SB should be first performed at the time of routine first-trimester ultrasound by examining the posterior fossa for obliteration or non-visualization of the fourth ventricle ("intracranial translucency") and cisterna magna. The second step of screening is the second-trimester anatomy scan, at which time the features of the Chiari type II malformation should be looked for, including ventriculomegaly, scalloping of the frontal bones ("lemon" sign), and backward and ca…

Identification and return of a skull from Tasmania in the Berlin anatomical collection.

Following a request by the Australian government, human remains of Australian origin were identified in the anatomical collection of Charité … t meningitis. These results match the historical findings, which started from an inscription on the frontal bone giving a first name ("Nanny"), an ancestry ("native of Kangaroo Island"), a collector ("Schayer"), and a location ("van Diemensland", i.e. Tasmania). The collector, Adolph Schayer, was a German sheep breeder and botanical/zoological collector living …

Lateral release in hallux valgus deformity: from anatomic study to surgical tip.

The important part of hallux valgus deformity operations, especially in the case of an incongruent joint, is the release of the soft tissue on the lateral side of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The purpose of the present anatomic study was, with preparation of the lateral structures of the joint and lateral conjoined tendon, to provide a background for a surgical tip of the release of the joint for an additional metatarsal osteotomy. For the present study, we used 30 specimens (15 left and 15 right) from 19 cadavers at the Institute of Anatomy, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles Faculty

[Thymoma in children: a report of one case].

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is an uncommon tumor of childhood. It is an anterior mediastinal tumor with few symptoms. The pleura is the most frequent metastatic site. Surgery is the treatment of choice and the most important prognostic factors are the stage at initial presentation and whether complete resection can be performed. CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old girl with no pathological antecedent presented with a history of prolonged fever. Frontal chest radiography showed a large mediastinal soft tissue mass with sharp lateral and inferior margins. Computed tomography showed a large anterosuperior and med

Does the incidence of traumatic brain injury in children increase after craniofrontal surgery?

BACKGROUND: Craniofrontal reshaping (CR) for the treatment of craniosynostosis results in a temporary cranial defect due to the advancement and/or expansion of the supraorbital and frontal bones. The goal of the present study was to determine whether the incidence traumatic brain injury (TBI) was increased in patients after CR as a result of this breach in skull integrity. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients with a diagnosis of craniosynostosis who underwent CR between 1997 and 2007 at our institution. The incidence of TBI (defined as a computed tomography-docum…

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion associated with hemophagocytic syndrome.

We reported a girl with HHV-6 infection associated with both acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion, and hemophagocytic syndrome. She had a prolonged convulsion after a one-day history of febrile illness. Cerebrospinal fluid or brain CT showed no abnormalities on admission and her consciousness was recovered on the next day. However, a prolonged seizure and deterioration of consciousness appeared on the sixth day of illness. Diffusion-weighted images revealed marked reduction of water diffusion in the bilateral frontal areas. HHV-6 infection was virologically pr

Computer aided high tibial open wedge osteotomy.

High tibial osteotomy is a widely accepted treatment of medial compartment osteoarthritis as well as other lower extremity deformities. However, it is a technically demanding procedure. The lack of exact intraoperative real time control of the mechanical axis often results in postoperative malalignments, which is one reason for poor long term results. These problems can be addressed with the use of a surgical navigation system. Following exposure, dynamic reference bases (DRBs) are attached to the femur, and the proximal and the distal part of the tibia. After intraoperative measurement of the

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus.

Cholesterol granuloma is usually associated with chronic middle ear disease and is common in the mastoid antrum and air cells of the temporal bone. It has also been reported in other parts of the skull, such as the frontal and maxillary sinuses and orbit. Cholesterol granuloma is rare in the paranasal sinuses. We report a new case of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary sinus of a 38-year-old man who underwent surgical excision. We also review the literature and discuss the mechanism of development for this lesion. The resected specimen showed fragments of respiratory mucosa with cholesterol

[A case of dural arteriovenous malformation on the convexity adjacent to the superior sagittal sinus].

A case of dural arteriovenous malformation (DAVM) on the convexity adjacent to the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) was reported. A 55-year-old female was admitted to our hospital complaining of severe headache and intracranial bruit. CT scan revealed an osteolytic lesion at the right frontal bone adjacent to the SSS, and MRI showed a flow void area at the same site. Cerebral angiography detected DAVM which was fed by bilateral superficial temporal arteries and plenty of meningeal branches of the middle meningeal artery. It was drained by cortical veins to the SSS. Endovascular surgery was tried …
