The influence of glucose administration on stress reactivity and long-term memory in adult men and women.

Stress and the associated cortisol release have profound effects on long-term memory (LTM). While glucose increases the cortisol stress response and exhibits memory enhancing effects in non-stressful situations, the interaction of glucose and stress on LTM has rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the glucose-related amplification of the cortisol stress response would enhance LTM formation. Overall, N = 62 healthy, fasted adults (age M = 23.13, SD = 3.02; 54.84 % female) participated. They consumed a drink containing water or glucose and underwent a non-stressfu

Recalled childhood trauma and post-psychedelic trajectories of change in a mixed-methods study.

This mixed-methods study examines how participant-identified childhood or youth trauma resurfaces during psychedelic states and how such episodes relate to post-experience trajectories. Including events participants identified as traumatic during psychedelic experiences, and subsequent psychological outcomes, both positive and negative. While psychedelics can facilitate emotional processing of autobiographical material, a minority experience adverse effects or re-traumatization when trauma resurfaces. Phase 1 surveyed 608 individuals who experienced post-psychedelic difficulties lasting beyond

Internet-delivered cognitive control training as a preventive intervention for remitted depressed patients: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Preventing recurrence of depression forms an important challenge for current treatments. Cognitive control impairments often remain present during remission of depression, putting remitted depressed patients at heightened risk for new depressive episodes by disrupting emotion regulation processes. Importantly, research indicates that cognitive control training targeting working memory functioning shows potential in reducing maladaptive emotion regulation and depressive symptomatology in clinically depressed patients and at-risk student samples. The current study aims to test the ef

Immunological insights into hypertension: unraveling triggers and potential therapeutic avenues.

Hypertension remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite its prevalence, the development of novel antihypertensive therapies has only recently accelerated, with novel agents not yet commercialized, leaving a substantial proportion of individuals resistant to existing treatments. The intricate pathophysiology of hypertension is now understood to involve chronic low-grade inflammation, which places the immune system in the spotlight as a potential target for new therapeutics. This review explores the factors that initiate and sustain an immune response in hypertension

Valproic acid but not D-cycloserine facilitates sleep-dependent offline learning of extinction and habituation of conditioned fear in humans.

The effectiveness of D-cycloserine (DCS), an N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor partial agonist, and valproic acid (VPA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, in facilitating the extinction of fear-conditioned memory has been explored in humans and animals. Here, we confirmed whether DCS (100 mg) and VPA (400 mg) act in off-line learning processes during sleep or waking, for further clinical application to anxiety disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We performed a randomized, blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in 90 healthy adults. Visual cues and electric shocks were us

Preliminary evidence for script generation as an efficient, objective measure of everyday function in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Mild difficulties performing everyday activities may emerge early in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias, creating a need for objective, efficient measures sensitive to subtle functional changes. This study investigated a script generation task (SGT), which required individuals to verbally describe the steps needed to complete familiar everyday activities, as a potential method for detecting mild functional difficulties in older adults with or without mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We examined both human-coded features of script generation and automate

Protocol of a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial of an 18-month, home-based, high-intensity, exercise intervention in older, cognitively unimpaired APOE ε4 carriers.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization highlighted the potential protective role of exercise against cognitive decline, all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia in healthy individuals. We have previously shown that exercise is particularly beneficial for older, cognitively unimpaired apolipoprotein E4 (APOE ε4) carriers. A key unanswered question is whether a long-term, high-intensity aerobic exercise intervention initiated in a cohort of previously inactive older individuals at genetic risk for AD has neuroprotective properties. DESIGN: CYCLE-AD is a randomized,

rTMS regulates homotopic functional connectivity in the SCD and MCI patients.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired interhemispheric connectivity and corpus callosum atrophy have been linked to cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Existing evidence indicates that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the bilateral precuneus may enhance cognitive function in AD. This study aims to investigate the effects of precuneus rTMS on cognitive function, as well as alterations in interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) and its structural basis in patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: A total of 14 p

Effects of sleep disturbances and circadian rhythms modifications on cognition in breast cancer women before and after adjuvant chemotherapy: the ICANSLEEP-1 protocol.

BACKGROUND: Many patients treated for breast cancer (BC) complain about cognitive difficulties affecting their daily lives. Recently, sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions have been brought to the fore as potential contributors to cognitive difficulties in patients with BC. Yet, studies on these factors as well as their neural correlates are scarce. The purpose of the ICANSLEEP-1 (Impact of SLEEP disturbances in CANcer) study is to characterize sleep using polysomnography and its relationship with the evolution of cognitive functioning at both the behavioral and the neuroanatomic

New evidence of trends in cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults in China, 2011-2018: an age-period-cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence from high-income countries suggests the risk of cognitive impairment has been declining recently. However, related studies in China have rarely been done, and the results are inconsistent. We analyze the trends in cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults in China between 2011 and 2018. METHODS: We used data from four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 48918 individuals aged 45 years and older. Cognitive function was assessed using the CHARLS cognitive measures containing episodic memory, orientation, att

The longitudinal bidirectional association between sarcopenia and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults: Findings from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Although an association between sarcopenia and cognitive function has been demonstrated, the directional association remains unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal reciprocal relationship and identify the possible temporal sequence between sarcopenia and cognitive function in older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) baseline survey in 2011 and the follow-up survey in 2015. Cognitive function was measured by episodic memory and executive function. Sarcopenia status (non-sarcopenia, pos

Time after a peak-pesticide use period and neurobehavior among ecuadorian children and adolescents: The ESPINA study.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists regarding transient neurobehavioral alterations associated with episodic pesticide exposures or agricultural pesticide spray periods. We previously observed that children examined soon after a pesticide spray period (the Mother's Day flower harvest [MDH]) had lower neurobehavioral performance than children examined later. The present study builds on our previous work by incorporating longitudinal analyses from childhood through adolescence. METHODS: We examined participants in agricultural communities in Ecuador (ESPINA study) during three periods: July-Aug

The effect of physical activity on cognition relative to APOE genotype (PAAD-2): study protocol for a phase II randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: By 2050, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the United States is predicted to reach 13.8 million. Despite worldwide research efforts, a cure for AD has not been identified. Thus, it is critical to identify preventive strategies that can reduce the risk of or delay the onset of AD. Physical activity (PA) has potential in this regard. This randomized clinical trial aims to (a) test the causal relationship between PA and AD-associated cognitive function for persons with a family history of AD (FH+), (b) determine the moderating role of apolipoprotein epsilon 4 (APOE4) carri
