Adipose inflammation in obesity: relationship with circulating levels of inflammatory markers and association with surgery-induced weight loss.

CONTEXT: The inflammatory state of the adipose tissue is believed to contribute to systemic low-grade inflammation in obesity. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the relationship between adipose and circulating inflammatory markers as well as the influence of adipose inflammation on bariatric surgery-induced weight reduction. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional and longitudinal study (up to 14 mo). SETTING: The study was conducted in the digestive/bariatric surgery department of the Tivoli and Jean Villar clinics, Bordeaux, France. PATIENTS: Thirty-seven obese patients [body mass index (BMI)>35

Strategies for reducing the incidence of skin complications in newborns treated with whole-body hypothermia.

OBJECTIVE: To present the results of a strategy designed to reduce the incidence of skin complications in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with moderate whole-body hypothermia. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). PATIENTS: Thirty-nine neonates cooled in the considered period. INTERVENTION: Starting from January 2008, for neonates treated with moderate whole-body hypothermia (33.5 °C), the cooling system was set in "automatic servo-controlled mode (ACM)", where the temperature of the circulating water could vary between 4 °C and 42

CT and MR features of sclerosing mesenteritis mimicking a mesenteric metastasis from the carcinoid tumor.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare and benign inflammatory entity characterized by fibrofatty thickening of the mesentery. To our knowledge, there are only a few reports on the features of sclerosing mesenteritis on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT). In this present case, MR imaging demonstrated tissue characterization of fibrosis, and partial maximum intensity projection (MIP) and three-dimensional angiography images obtained using multislice CT clearly revealed the extent of the tumor and the vascular appearance affected by the mass. However, a mesenteric metastasis

Subcutaneous panniculitic T-cell lymphoma in children: response to combination therapy with cyclosporine and chemotherapy.

We describe 2 adolescent boys with facial swelling and/or subcutaneous nodules and fever. Extensive evaluation, including several biopsy specimens, led to a diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitic T-cell lymphoma, an entity rarely seen in children. Both patients were treated with oral cyclosporine in an effort to suppress the cytokine release from T-cells that has been thought to induce the hemophagocytic syndrome. The patients responded dramatically to cyclosporine treatment with defervescence of the fever and reduction in number and size of the subcutaneous nodules. Subsequent therapy with mu

Crystal-storing histiocytosis associated with lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma mimicking Weber-Christian disease: immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and gene-rearrangement studies.

A case of crystal-storing histiocytosis associated with lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma is presented. Unlike previous cases, this patient presented with signs and symptoms suggestive of Weber-Christian disease. Biopsy of subcutaneous nodules showed numerous deposits of crystal-storing histiocytes with lymphoplasmacytic cells, the latter exhibiting light chain restriction (lambda-chain) with a predominance of immunoglobulin (Ig)G heavy chain. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of CDR-II* region of the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus confirmed monoclonality of the lymphoplasmacytic cells in th

[Multifocal fibrosclerosis. 3 cases with skeletal and nervous system involvement].

Three cases of multifocal fibrosclerosis are reported. In the first case the clinical symptoms were diabetes insipidus associated with nodular pulmonary infiltrates and a retroperitoneal mass. In the second case, respiratory failure together with nodular pulmonary infiltrates dominated the picture. The third case was characterized principally by neurological symptoms and paraparesia secondary to the compression of the spinal cord by an intra-rachidial growth. In cases 1 and 3, X-ray studies of the skeleton showed a very peculiar involvement of bone shafts. Anatomical studies either by repeated

Proof-of-concept study of the caninized anti-canine programmed death 1 antibody in dogs with advanced non-oral malignant melanoma solid tumors.

We have pre … ment-related AEs of any grade occurred in 13 out of 37 cases (35.1%). Two dogs with sterile nodular panniculitis and one with myasthenia gravis and hypothyroidism were suspected of immune-related AEs. In 30 out of 37 dogs that had target tumor lesions, the overall response and clinical benefit rates were 6.9% and 27.6%, respectively. The median progression-fre …

Designing Clinical Trials in "Regular" COPD Versus Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency-Associated COPD: "More Alike Than Unalike?".

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) predisposes to emphysema, liver disease, and panniculitis. This emphysema risk naturally invites a comparison between "regular" chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (i.e., unrelated to AATD) and AATD-associated emphysema. Several features characterize both conditions. Both can be life-limiting and highly debilitating. Both are highly under-recognized. An important corollary of this comparison between "regular" COPD and AATD-associated COPD is whether both should be treated similarly and whether clinical trials to assess new therapies can be conduct…

A novel germline HAVCR2 (TIM-3) compound heterozygous mutation is related to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytic syndrome in EBV-positive peripheral T-cell lymphoma (NOS) with down-regulated TIM-3 signaling.

Recently, it have been reported that Hepatitis A Virus-Cellular Receptor 2(HAVCR2,encoding T-cell immunoglobulin and Mucin-Containing Protein 3[TIM3]) mutations are associated with severe hemophagocytic syndrome(HLH) in subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma(SPTCL),and there are also frequent mutations in sporadic SPTCL, suggesting the individuals harboring HAVCR2(TIM-3) germline mutations are highly susceptible to familial or sporadic SPTCL. Here, we identify a novel germline compound heterozygous mutation of TIM-3 gene,c.245A>G (p.Tyr82Cys) and c.265C>T(p.Arg89Cys) variations in a si…
