BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is characterized by increased and sustained emotional reactivity, which has been linked to sustained amygdala activity. It is also characterized by disruptions in executive control, linked to abnormal dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) function. These mechanisms have been hypothesized to interact in depression. This study explored relationships between amygdala and DLPFC activity during emotional and cognitive information processing in unipolar depression.
METHOD: Twenty-seven unmedicated patients with DSM-IV unipolar major depressive disorder and 25

In an Internet study unrelated to handedness, 134,317 female and 120,783 male participants answered a graded question as to which hand they preferred for writing. This allowed determination of hand preference patterns across 7 ethnic groups. Sex differences in left-handedness were found in 4 ethnic groups, favoring males, while no significant sex differences were found in three of the groups. Prevalence of left-handedness in the largest of the ethnic groups (self-labelled as "White") was comparable to contemporary hand preference data for this group [Gilbert, A. N., & Wysocki, C. J. (1992). Ha

Self-recognition has been demonstrated by a select number of primate species and is often used as an index of self-awareness. Whether a specialized neural mechanism for self-face recognition in humans exists remains unclear. We used event-related fMRI to investigate brain regions selectively activated by images of one's own face. Ten right-handed normal subjects viewed digital morphs between their own face and a gender-matched familiar other presented in a random sequence. Subjects were instructed to press a button with the right hand if the image looked like their own face, and another button

OBJECTIVE: Cholinesterase inhibitors improve cognitive functioning in Alzheimer disease (AD). The authors studied, with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the neural mechanism by which this cholinergic enhancement improves memory encoding in AD over longer time periods.
METHODS: Brain activation was measured in 10 patients with AD and 10 healthy elderly comparison subjects with fMRI while they were encoding novel faces. Patients were scanned again after a 10-week open treatment with the cholinesterase-inhibitor donepezil.
RESULTS: Neuropsychologically-tested memory performance imp

The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the orthographic and phonological processing of Chinese characters. Four tasks were devised, including one homophone judgment and three physical judgments of characters, pseudo-characters, and Korean-like nonsense figures. While the left occipitotemporal region, left dorsal processing stream, and right middle frontal gyrus constitute a network for orthographic processing, the left premotor gyrus, left middle/inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left tem

Extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO) is a leading cause of prehepatic portal hypertension in children, particularly in developing countries. While upper gastrointestinal bleeding is the most common presentation, EHPVO may rarely manifest predominantly with hematological abnormalities due to hypersplenism, posing a diagnostic challenge and mimicking primary bone marrow disorders. We report a 13-year-old female child who presented with pancytopenia, splenomegaly, and easy fatigability, without a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or liver disease. Initial evaluation suggested a prima

Hypoxic-ischemic injury (HII) at birth has been found to relate to differences in development, including decreased memory performance. The current study assessed recognition memory in 6- and 12-month-old HII infants and typically developing (TD) infants using two eye-tracking paradigms well suited to explore explicit memory processes early in life: visual paired comparison (VPC) and relational memory (RM). During the VPC, infants were familiarized to a face and then tested for their novelty preference immediately and after a two-minute delay. At 6 months, neither HII nor TD showed a VPC novelt

The Retinogeniculate Visual Pathway (RGVP) is one of the primary neural pathways responsible for transmitting visual signals from the retina to the lateral geniculate nucleus. Accurate and complete identification of the RGVP is crucial for advancing our understanding of visual cognition and for improving neurosurgical planning. Recently, a number of automated deep learning-based approaches have been developed to overcome the limitations of traditional RGVP identification methods, which are often time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, most existing methods primarily depend on fiber geomet

Visualization of peripheral nervous system axons and cell bodies is important to understand their development, target recognition, and integration into complex circuitries. Numerous studies have used protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 [a.k.a. ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1)] expression as a marker to label sensory neurons and their axons. Enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) expression, under the control of UCHL1 promoter, is stable and long lasting in the UCHL1-eGFP reporter line. In addition to the genetic labeling of corticospinal motor neurons in the motor cortex and degen

Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) has been used for detection of autoantibodies against cellular antigens for more than 50 years. Originally using rodent tissue as substrate, the method was optimized by using the human immortal HEp-2 cell line derived from a larynx epidermal carcinoma. The HEp-2/IFA platform allows for optimal visualization of several cellular domains recognized by autoantibodies in the samples being tested. Serial dilution allows for the estimation of the concentration (titer) of the autoantibodies in the sample. Judicious analysis of the topographic distribution of the

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring hallucinogen known to produce alterations in perception, cognition, and autonomic function through its effects on central serotonergic pathways. Products marketed as "mushroom" formulations may contain psilocybin or related psychoactive compounds despite ambiguous labeling and limited regulatory clarity, creating diagnostic challenges for clinicians in acute care settings. We present the case of an 18-year-old female with no prior medical or psychiatric history who presented to the emergency department with sudden-onset severe anxiety, agitation, tremors, di

In this study, the first to explore the cortical correlates of signed language (SL) processing under point-light display conditions, the observer identified either a signer or a lexical sign from a display in which different signers were seen producing a number of different individual signs. Many of the regions activated by point-light under these conditions replicated those previously reported for full-image displays, including regions within the inferior temporal cortex that are specialised for face and body-part identification, although such body parts were invisible in the display. The organization of the normal perceptual processing subserving tactile object recognition is poorly understood. While perceptual deficits associated with cases of tactile agnosia may pinpoint sites of critical interference with normal tactile information processing, the precise character of such deficits remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to explore the behavioural and neuroanatomical correlates of perceptual disturbances in two cases of unilateral aperceptive tactile agnosia. Perception of microgeometrical and macrogeometrical features was tested using an alternative forced ch

Visual hallucinations are frequent, disabling complications of advanced Parkinson's disease, but their neuroanatomical basis is incompletely understood. Previous structural brain magnetic resonance imaging studies suggest volume loss in the mesial temporal lobe and limbic regions in subjects with Parkinson's disease with visual hallucinations, relative to those without visual hallucinations. However, these studies have not always controlled for the presence of cognitive impairment or dementia, which are common co-morbidities of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease and whose neuroanatomical su

Parkinson's disease (PD) presents a significant clinical challenge due to its profound motor and cognitive impacts. Early diagnosis is crucial for implementing effective, stage-based treatment strategies. Recently, eye-tracking technology has emerged as a promising tool for the non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of various neurological disorders, including PD. This retrospective study analyzed eye-tracking parameters, specifically visually-guided saccades (VGS), in PD patients within a clinical setting. We reviewed eye-tracking data from 62 PD patients, focusing on eye movement performance

Third nerve palsy (TNP) is a neurologic condition characterized by dysfunction of the oculomotor nerve, leading to various ocular manifestations. Optic nerve evaluation is of utmost important among all cranial nerve palsies affecting the eye. Dysfunction of the third nerve can indicate an underlying neurologic emergency, such as cavernous arteriovenous fistula or giant cell arteritis. Early recognition and prompt treatment are vital in reversing the clinical and visual impairments associated with oculomotor nerve palsy. The typical presentation of isolated TNP involves deviation of the eye in

Historically, the anterior part of the temporal lobe was labelled as a unique structure named Brain Area 38 by Brodmann or Temporopolar Area TG by Von Economo, but its functions were unknown at that time. Later on, a few studies proposed to divide the temporal pole in several different subparts, based on distinct cytoarchitectural structure or connectivity patterns, while a still growing number of studies have associated the temporal pole with many cognitive functions. In this review, we provide an overview of the temporal pole anatomical and histological structure and its various functions. W

To address the limitations of existing fault diagnosis methods for excitation dry-type transformers, such as inadequate utilization of multi-axis vibration data, low recognition accuracy under complex operational conditions, and limited computational efficiency, this paper presents a lightweight fault diagnosis approach based on the fusion of multi-channel vibration signals and visual features. Initially, a multi-physics field coupling simulation model of the excitation dry-type transformer is developed. Vibration data collected from field-installed three-axis sensors are combined to generate
