Challenging behaviour by patients or close contacts, as experienced by healthcare workers in adult general and university hospital care: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professionals in general and academic hospitals increasingly face challenging behaviour from patients and their close contacts, particularly in acute care settings. Ranging from aggression to socially inappropriate actions, such behaviour is understood as interactional and context-dependent. Yet research largely focuses on verbal and physical aggression, leaving other forms and hospital context underexplored, despite concerns about staff safety, workforce sustainability and care quality. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review aims to map literature on challenging b

Mental health and wellbeing interventions for uniformed service personnel: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Uniformed service personnel are routinely exposed to occupational trauma in their roles which contribute to elevated rates of mental health conditions. A wide range of mental health and wellbeing interventions may help uniformed service personnel manage their psychological responses to challenging incidents at work. Previous reviews of those interventions have focused on single groups of professionals or intervention types, limiting cross-sector insights. This review uses a mixed methods approach to synthesise evidence associated with mental health and wellbeing interventions acros

Biosensor Technologies and Smart Dressings for Chronic Wound Monitoring: A Systematic Review.

Chronic wound assessment remains largely subjective and time-consuming. Although advances in biosensors and smart dressings enable objective, continuous monitoring of key parameters, with earlier detection of complications and improved efficiency in wound management, their translation into clinical practice remains limited. This systematic review synthesises current evidence on advantages, barriers and facilitators influencing the adoption of biosensor-based and smart dressing technologies for chronic wound monitoring, using an implementation science perspective. A systematic search of PubMed

Evolution of Multifaceted Sport-Related Concussion Management: A 25-Year Narrative Review of Multidomain Assessment and Multimodal Rehabilitation.

CONTEXT: Sport-related concussion (SRC) management has evolved substantially over the past 25 years. Early paradigms emphasized prolonged physical and cognitive rest; however, growing evidence has demonstrated that recovery following SRC is multidimensional and influenced by interacting neurological, vestibular, autonomic, cervical, cognitive, and psychological systems. Consequently, contemporary clinical practice has shifted toward active, multifaceted rehabilitation approaches. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to synthesize and contextualize the evidence supporting a multifaceted approach to sport-relat

Transforaminal intradiscal steroid injection versus transforaminal epidural steroid injection for chronic discogenic low back pain with active discopathy: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic discogenic low back pain (DLBP) with active discopathy (Modic type 1 changes) is a specific and debilitating phenotype. Transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TESI) and transforaminal intradiscal steroid injection (TISI) are commonly used treatments, yet their comparative efficacy remains uncertain due to a lack of high-quality, direct comparative studies. OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of TISI versus TESI and to investigate whether the anatomical target of corticosteroid delivery (intradiscal vs. epidural) influences clinical and radiologica

Quality of life in patients with craniofacial anomalies: personal experience and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial anomalies, particularly cleft lip and palate affecting 1 in 500 to 1 in 2,500 live births globally, exert profound influences on physical function, psychological well-being, and social integration throughout the entire life. While surgical advances have improved outcomes, the long-term impact on the quality of life remains incompletely understood, necessitating comprehensive evaluation of psychosocial outcomes following primary surgical repair. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional comparative study evaluating 85 pediatric patients aged 4-7 years with surgically rep

An exploratory study on the predictors of lifelong participation in adults with brachial plexus birth injury.

BACKGROUND: During transitions to adulthood, participation after brachial plexus birth injury is contextualized by increasing independence and age-related milestones, illustrated by new social demands, education or career choices, and physical maturation. However, our understanding of the underlying mental or physical factors that influence participation into adulthood remains unrecognized. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify how mental and physical factors relate to participation of adults with brachial plexus birth injury as measured by a battery of standardized patient-reported

Advancements in treating stretch marks across all skin types: a comprehensive review of therapeutic modalities.

BACKGROUND: Striae distensae (SD) (stretch marks) are common dermal scars resulting from rapid skin stretching during puberty, pregnancy, or weight changes and disproportionately affect women. Management remains challenging, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones, due to variable efficacy and the risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation with certain therapies. OBJECTIVE: To review current and emerging treatment modalities for SD across all Fitzpatrick skin types, with an emphasis on efficacy, safety, and the role of combination therapies. METHODS: A comprehensive literature rev

Transitions from first drug use to illicit opioid and injection drug use in a multisite rural U.S. cohort of people who use drugs.

AIM: To understand circumstances surrounding transitions between initial drug use, non-prescribed opioid use, and injection drug use (IDU) among people who use non-prescribed opioids in the rural U.S. METHODS: We interviewed adults who use non-prescribed opioids in 10 states. We coded transcript data regarding age, drug, modality, circumstances for each "first use" event and transitions to illicit opioid use/IDU. Transition-related themes were categorized using the Social Ecological Model (SEM) through iterative qualitative memoing. We calculated frequencies and measures of central tendency.

Why they come, why they stay and why they leave: a survey to understand the drivers of recruitment, retention, and attrition of allied health clinicians in an Australian metropolitan health network.

BACKGROUND: While allied health plays a central role in healthcare, workforce challenges are straining the sector. Challenges are shaped by population changes, emerging models of care, and educational limitations, and were exacerbated by COVID-19. This study aimed to identify drivers of recruitment and retention for allied health clinicians in an Australian metropolitan setting. Identifying and addressing these factors is essential to the design and implementation of tailored, evidence-informed workforce strategy and policy. METHODS: This cross-sectional, online survey explored workplace attr

Co-regulation between young deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their caregivers: study protocol of Calming Together.

BACKGROUND: Children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) often experience more difficulties with self-regulation than their typical hearing peers. Self-regulation develops partly through internalization of regulation strategies provided by their caregivers during co-regulation. Co-regulation is a dynamic process through which caregivers and children influence and regulate each other's emotions and physiological responses. Given the essential role of co-regulation in the development of self-regulation it is important to investigate co-regulation in DHH children and their caregivers, given th

Community-based heat adaptation interventions for improving heat literacy, behaviours, and health outcomes: a systematic review.

Anthropogenic climate change, resulting in a continuous rise of global temperature, has detrimental effects on human health, particularly among vulnerable populations, such as individuals with low income, older adults, and people with pre-existing health conditions. To reduce the heat-related health consequences, effective interventions targeting community members, especially vulnerable populations, are paramount. This systematic review aims to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of community-based heat adaptation behavioural interventions aimed at improving heat literacy, promoting adapti

Navigating public, semi-public, and private drug use environments: A qualitative examination of unsheltered homelessness and drug use in Baltimore City.

Unsheltered people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States (US) have a disproportionately high burden of illegal drug use and overdose. Due to their economic and social marginalization, unsheltered PEH who use drugs are often constrained in where they use drugs, and this can hinder their engagement in harm reduction practices and increase their overdose risk. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, this study investigates how unsheltered PEH who use drugs in Baltimore City perceive and engage with their drug use environment and how public, semi-public, and private features
