The Effect of Concomitant Biceps Tenodesis on Reoperation Rates After Rotator Cuff Repair: A Review of a Large Private-Payer Database From 2007 to 2014.

PURPOSE: To determine if reoperation rates are higher for patients who underwent isolated rotator cuff repair (RCR) than those who underwent RCR with concomitant biceps tenodesis using a large private-payer database. METHODS: A national insurance database was queried for patients who underwent arthroscopic RCR between the years 2007 and 2014 (PearlDiver, Warsaw, IN). The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) 29,827 (arthroscopy, shoulder, surgical; with RCR) identified RCR patients who were subdivided into 3 groups-group 1: RCR without biceps tenodesis; group 2: RCR with concomitant arthroscop

The mid-term outcomes on reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with isolated latissimus dorsi transfer in patients with isolated external rotation lag without pseudoparalysis: an average follow-up of 5 years.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is a well-established replacement strategy to treat irreparable massive rotator cuff tears and cuff tear arthropathy. In patients with forward (FF) deficits combined with a loss of external rotation (ER), RSA with latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT), which was initially used for brachial plexopathies, has been addressed to restore both functional deficits. The aim of the study is to assess mid-term clinical and radiological outcomes of concomitant RSA with LDT in patients with significant preoperative external rotation lag greater than 30 degr

[Paralytic shoulder secondary to post-traumatic peripheral nerve lesions in the adult].

A critical review is presented of the indications for nerve repair or transfer and for palliative operations in the management of paralytic shoulder following traumatic neurological injuries in the adult. Different situations are considered: paralytic shoulder following supraclavicular lesions of the brachial plexus, following retro- and infraclavicular lesions and following lesions to the terminal branches of the plexus (axillary, suprascapular and musculocutaneous nerves) and finally problems related to lesions of the accessory nerve and the long thoracic nerve. I. Supraclavicular lesions of

Radiomics and Deep Learning for Disease Detection in Musculoskeletal Radiology: An Overview of Novel MRI- and CT-Based Approaches.

Radiomics and machine learning-based methods offer exciting opportunities for improving diagnostic performance and efficiency in musculoskeletal radiology for various tasks, including acute injuries, chronic conditions, spinal abnormalities, and neoplasms. While early radiomics-based methods were often limited to a smaller number of higher-order image feature extractions, applying machine learning-based analytic models, multifactorial correlations, and classifiers now permits big data processing and testing thousands of features to identify relevant markers. A growing number of novel deep lear

Suprascapular neuropathy caused by heterotopic ossification after clavicle shaft fracture: a case report.

Suprascapular neuropathy is a rare peripheral neuropathy that can be easily overlooked in the differential diagnosis of shoulder pain and dysfunction. The suprascapular nerve may be injured as a result of repetitive overuse, constriction due to anatomic variants, compression due to space occupying lesions, retraction due to a massive rotator cuff tear and iatrogenic or traumatic lesions. Trauma-related suprascapular neuropathies are often caused by glenohumeral joint dislocations, scapular fractures, proximal humeral fractures, penetrating injuries and displaced clavicle fractures. Although ma

Evaluation of the lower motor neuron integrity of upper extremity muscles in high level spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the lower motor neuron (LMN) integrity of upper extremity muscles of persons with high tetraplegia (C1-C4) in order to determine muscles available for stimulation. METHODS: Fourteen subjects (23 arms) were evaluated for LMN integrity. Muscles that elicited a functional response (grade 3 or better) to surface electrical stimulation were considered to have intact LMN and good candidates for FES. Strength-duration (S-D) curves were generated on muscles that showed weak (less than grade 3) or no response to surface stimulation. Muscles were considered denervated if S-D curves

Patch augmentation for large-to-massive rotator cuff tears: do they heal well in anterior cable disruption?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that human dermal allograft (HDA) augmentation can improve clinical outcomes and reduce retears in large-to-massive rotator cuff tears (LMRCTs). However, its effectiveness in cases with anterior cable disruptions has not been well established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether patch augmentation is still effective in the presence of anterior cable disruption. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent arthroscopic repair with HDA augmentation for repairable LMRCTs between March 2020 and May 2023. Patients were divided

Effect of Preoperative Lipidemic Control on Retear Rates After Rotator Cuff Repair in Patients With Hyperlipidemia.

BACKGROUND: In patients with hyperlipidemia, the risk of retear increases after rotator cuff repair (RCR). In particular, it has been reported that preoperative low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level affects cuff integrity. However, there are no studies assessing whether lipidemic control affects cuff healing. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of preoperative lipidemic control on cuff integrity after arthroscopic RCR across cardiovascular disease risk groups in patients with hyperlipidemia. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: The authors retrospectively

Association between acromion morphological parameters and rotator cuff tears in Somali population-a three-dimensional computed tomographic study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has established connections between the acromion index (AI), critical shoulder angle (CSA), acromiohumeral distance (AHD), and lateral acromion angle (LAA) with the incidence of rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Despite numerous international studies exploring the variability of shoulder joint morphology and parameters, research incorporating these parameters has yet to be conducted in Somalia. This study aims to analyze and describe the radiological parameters of acromion morphology in the Somali populations. Furthermore, to investigate the relationship of these paramet

Gene Expression in Synovium of Rotator Cuff Tear Patients Determined by RNA Sequencing.

Rotator cuff tear (RCT) is a common shoulder disorder related to pain and dysfunction. However, the pathological mechanism of RCT remains unclear. Thus, this study aims to investigate the molecular events in RCT synovium and identify possible target genes and pathways as determined by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). The synovial tissue was biopsied from 3 patients with RCT (RCT group) and 3 patients with shoulder instability (Control group) during arthroscopic surgery. Then, differentially expressed (DE) mRNAs, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and micro RNAs (miRNAs) were comprehensively profiled by R
