A randomized trial of tailored skin cancer prevention messages for adults: Project SCAPE.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the impact of a mailed, tailored intervention on skin cancer prevention and skin self-examination behaviors of adults at moderate and high risk for skin cancer. METHODS: Adults at moderate and high risk for skin cancer were recruited in primary health care settings in Honolulu, HI, and Long Island, NY. After completing a baseline survey, participants were randomized to 2 groups. The treatment group received tailored materials, including personalized risk feedback, and the control group received general educational materials. Multivariate analyses compared sun protecti

Invited commentary: Recall bias in melanoma -- much ado about almost nothing?

Recall bias has been given considerable attention in textbooks and methodological research because of its potential to jeopardize the validity of epidemiologic results. Case-control studies on self-reported ultraviolet radiation exposure as a risk factor for melanoma have been described as especially prone to the deleterious effect of recall bias because of the growing public awareness about these risks. Using an ideal test-retest design in a large nested case-control study, Parr et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2009;169(3):257-266) examined to what extent recall bias in melanoma risk factors is actual

Gender differences in young adults' beliefs about sunscreen use.

This study employs focus group methodology to explore gender differences in sunscreen use. Guided by the theory of reasoned action, males and females were found to differ on each of the following constructs: behavior, behavioral beliefs, and normative beliefs. Males and females differed in their sunscreen use, with females adopting a more preventive style of sunscreen use and males a more reactive style. Males and females differed in their salient beliefs that motivated their sunscreen use, many of which were related to traditional American gender roles. In addition, although males and females

Anti-inflammatory efficacy of topical preparations with 10% hamamelis distillate in a UV erythema test.

In 40 volunteers the efficacy of three lotions with 10% hamamelis distillates from different suppliers, two vehicles, dimethindene maleate 0.1% gel, hydrocortisone 1% cream and hydrocortisone 0.25% lotion were investigated in a modified UV erythema test with three UV dosages (1.2, 1.4 and 1.7 MED). The test preparations were applied occlusively over a 48-hour period following irradiation. Chromametric measurement of redness and visual assessment were performed 24, 48 and 72 h after induction of erythema. The hydrocortisone formulations were most effective in erythema suppression. An anti- infl

UVB photoprotection with antioxidants: effects of oral therapy with d-alpha-tocopherol and ascorbic acid on the minimal erythema dose.

Ultraviolet radiation absorption is responsible for the production of free radicals in damaged cells. This side effect may be neutralized using antioxidant substances. It has been reported that ascorbic acid and d-alpha-tocopherol scavenge reactive oxygen species. In a single-blind controlled clinical trial we studied 45 healthy volunteers divided into three groups. Group 1 received d-alpha-tocopherol 1,200 I.U. daily; Group 2 ascorbic acid 2 g daily and Group 3 ascorbic acid 2 g plus d-alpha-tocopherol 1,200 I.U. daily. Treatment was sustained for one week. Before and after treatment, the min

The Impact of Education Level on Basal Cell Carcinoma Development Risk.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) stands as the most common skin malignancy, with its high incidence rate and associated costs rising annually. The origin of BCC is related to environmental, genetic, and phenotypic factors. Among these, the most important risk factor is exposure to UV light triggering keratinocyte carcinogenesis, causing cumulative cellular damage that leads to BCC development. Individuals' educational background and awareness of skin cancer risk factors may influence the development of BCC. Lack of knowledge about risk factors (like chronic UV exposure, sunburn, artifici…

Sun-related knowledge and attitudes of primary and secondary schoolchildren in western Switzerland.

Switzerland, particularly its western region, has the highest incidence of melanoma in Europe. Although the risk of melanoma increases with sun overexposure during childhood, sun-related knowledge and attitudes of Swiss children are scarcely documented. We report the first investigation of the knowledge of the danger of ultraviolet radiation, attitudes towards a suntan and parental influence of schoolchildren in western Switzerland. All fifth, eighth and eleventh graders (average ages of 9, 12 and 15, respectively) in the 18 primary (fifth grade, n=431) and secondary (eighth and eleventh grade

Solar protection behaviors among outdoor workers.

Due to the lack of information regarding how US workers protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation, this study explored solar protection behaviors among three groups of outdoor workers. This cross-sectional research involved two separate studies. Study 1 consisted of observations of 312 outdoor workers, and Study 2 was a paper and pencil survey (n = 240). For each data set, occupational groups were compared on ultraviolet radiation protection. Observational data indicated that 50.4% of the workers had adequate protection. Across occupational groups, the ranking from highest to lowest levels

Fabrication of gelatin-based printable inks with improved stiffness as well as antibacterial and UV-shielding properties.

Gelatin-based inks have a broad range of applications in bioprinting for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to their biocompatibility, ease of modification, degradability, and rapid gelation induced by low temperature. However, gelatin-derived inks prepared through low-temperature treatment have poor mechanical properties that limit their applications. To solve this problem, we designed polyacrylamide/gelatin/silver nanoparticle (PAAm-GelatinAgNPs) ink to improve gelatin-based hydrogels. The ink is based on double networks, in which the physically cross-linked gelatin as the firs

Sensitivity to ultraviolet B is a risk factor for cutaneous melanoma in a Mediterranean population: results from an Italian case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Sun sensitivity is one of the predictors of melanoma risk, together with other individual characteristics such as skin and eye colour and number of naevi. However, it is unclear how best to measure sun sensitivity in order to quantify the individual risk of melanoma. OBJECTIVES: In this case-control study, the relationship between minimal erythema dose (MED) and skin colour (both instrumentally assessed) was investigated, and their possible role as independent risk factors for melanoma in a Mediterranean population evaluated. METHODS: In total, 143 patients with cutaneous melanom

[Sun protection during holidays].

Ultraviolet radiation is causally involved in induction of skin cancer, premature skin aging and photodermatoses. The longing of our western society for a "healthy tanning" as well as the unbroken trend to spend the holidays in sunny regions lead to the fact that human skin is increasingly exposed to ultraviolet radiation and its detrimental effects. Because of the socio-political importance of the vacation period as the "most beautiful and most important time of the year", effective prevention of these unwanted UV effects has an enormous importance to the general population. Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) Secondary to Monoarticular Septic Arthritis Leading to Multiorgan Failure in a Patient without Underlying Comorbidities: Emphasizing Early Diagnosis and Management Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) is a life-threatening condition caused by bacterial toxins. The STSS triad encompasses high fever, hypotensive shock, and a "sunburn-like" rash with desquamation. STSS, like Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), is a rare complication of streptococcal infections caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS), Streptococcal pyogenes (S. pyogenes). Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequently isolated bacterial species associated with TSS. Risk factors for STSS include older age, skin wounds, recent viral infection with open sores, recent surgery, nasal packing…
