BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown an inverse relation of mycobacterial infection and the frequency of allergic diseases and asthma. Recent evidence suggests that allergic inflammation may be inhibited in the presence of chronic and persistent infections, such as that by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). The relation of tuberculin skin test (TST) size, an accepted marker of MTB infection and the frequency of allergic disease symptoms has not been reported from an area where MTB infection is endemic.

Paucity of epidemiological data on tuberculosis in India prompted the National Tuberculosis Institute, Bangalore to embark upon a nation-wide survey to estimate the Annual Risk of Tuberculosis Infection in different parts of the country. The survey in Junagadh district, one of the 26 districts drafted under the nation-wide survey is reported here. OBJECTIVE: To determine the trend in the risk of tuberculous infection in non-BCG vaccinated children in Egypt in the period 1950-1996.
METHODS: In 1949-1952, a tuberculin survey was carried out in Egypt by the World Health Organization (WHO) covering 103 districts. In 1995-1997 a tuberculin survey was carried in 73 620 primary school children in grade one in the same districts, using international guidelines. The trend in tuberculous infection was determined by comparing the prevalence of Mantoux reactions of > or =6 mm in the two surveys in subjects without apparent BCG scar aged 6-7 years.

The Vyborg-3 republican sanatorium is intended to serve 210 patients with ocular tuberculosis. A total of 2521 histories of patients admitted to the sanatorium from different regions of the country were examined. A fourth of the patients needed differential diagnostic studies. Proliferation of rheumatoid and control peripheral blood mononuclear cells to OKT3, phorbol myristic acid (PMA), phytohemagglutinin (PHA), tuberculin PPD and in the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction (AMLR) was investigated. One hundred and ninety-nine patients were divided into three groups and examined for their skin reactions to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The groups consisted of those patients with rubella, those with cancer and those with dermatoses receiving long terms, small dose glucocorticosteroids. At present the eye tuberculosis still occurs only in its reactive form. But also these pathological processes may quite considerably disturb the vision. In the first place are chorioiditis (uveitis posterior), iritis and iridocyclitis (uveitis anterior), uveitis totalis and periphlebitis retinae are by far less frequent. Number and severity of the pathological processes considerably decreased during the last years, above all also the new diseases. Relapses are still increasedly observed. The problems of diagnostics and the necessary therapeutic measures are described.

T lymphocyte counts in the peripheral blood, lymphocyte response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and delayed hypersensitivity reactions were studied in ten patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH). Delayed hypersensitivity was abnormal in most patients and in vitro studies revealed impaired lymphocyte transformation to PHA in 50 per cent of the cases. These tests gave evidence of a functional alteration of lymphocytes in some PNH patients. The hypothesis of a disorder originated in a pluripotent lymphohaematopoietic stem cell is suggested.

Adult New Zealand white rabbits were experimentally infected with a parasitic African hemoflagellate, Trypanosoma congolense, and were subsequently tested for in vivo and in vitro aspects of cell-mediated immune function.
