Relationships Between Psychopathy and DSM Personality Disorders in Men and Women.

The current investigation asseses the relationship between DSM personality disorders (PDs) and PCL psychopathy in a community study: the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (CSDD). The children (Generation 3) of the original CSDD males (Generation 2) were assessed for PDs and psychopathy in early adulthood. Generation 3 consisted of both males (n = 291) and females (n = 260) and allowed for analyses separately for each gender. Cluster B PDs showed the strongest relationships with psychopathy, especially Borderline and Antisocial PD. Histrionic PD did not appear to have strong relationshi

Psychological assessment of psychopathology in opiate addicts.

A sample of 99 opiate addicts seeking treatment were assessed on three well established clinical assessment procedures; the Loevinger Sentence Completion, the Bellak Ego Functions Interview, and the Rorschach. Their scores were compared using normal and clinical reference groups. On all three procedures, opiate addicts had a significantly greater impairment than normals but significantly less thought disorder and impairments in ego functions than hospitalized borderline and psychotic patients. The results indicate that a primary disturbance in opiate addicts appears to be their relative inabil

The differential diagnosis of homosexuality.

The treatment of homosexuality presents serious difficulties owing to its multifactorial aetiology and variety of psychopathological views. It is suggested that the combined use of psychiatric and psychoanalytic models can contribute to the establishment of a satisfactory differential diagnosis. Out of the innumerable clinical types seen in practice and described in the literature, three major groups can be isolated. The homosexuality which occurs on the background of hysterical, obsessional and other neurotic personality types and related psychiatric conditions, tends to be linked with latent

Normalization of 14-3-3 in CJD.

We report on a 47-year-old woman with autopsy proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), who had a positive initial 14-3-3 test but a subsequent negative test under pharmacologic suppression of the periodic epileptiform discharges on EEG. Multiple factors associated with a subsequent 14-3-3 test becoming negative are known. However none of these circumstances were applicable to our patient. This case history suggests sedative therapy in CJD may induce false negative 14-3-3 testing. This appears to be a relevant finding, since the differential diagnosis between non-convulsive status epilepticus an

Interpersonal violence: expanding the search for long-term sequelae within a sample of battered women.

Lifetime sexual and physical victimization histories were examined within a shelter and outpatient sample of battered women (N = 43). Rates of prior victimization were very high with 71% of women reporting a childhood experience of physical abuse and 53% of women reporting a childhood experience of sexual abuse. These experiences were then examined as predictors of intra- and interpersonal functioning. Difficulties with identity development, low self-worth, borderline personality characteristics, and (at the trend level) difficulties with intimacy, received some support as long-term outcomes a

Prediction models for highly scalable technology-assisted differential diagnostics of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adulthood is time-consuming and markedly complicated by the requirement to distinguish between ASD and differential diagnoses also associated with social interaction difficulties, such as borderline personality disorder (BPD)-a distinction for which currently no valid screening or diagnostic tool exists. While technology-assisted diagnostics (TAD) has emerged, existing algorithms have focused on classifying between ASD and no diagnosis, not fully addressing clinical reality. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, we assessed the feasibility of TAD for d…

INTRODUCTION: This Hungarian cross-sectional study examined patterns and differences in suicide risk factors across various suicidality grou … ce (OR = 1.869, p = 0.035). In repeated suicide attempts, bipolar disorder (OR = 5.761, p = 0.006), borderline personality disorder (OR = 5.132, p = 0.003), depression (OR = 4.064, p = 0.004), and job loss (OR = 4.348, p = 0.031) emerged as the strongest predictors. Among men, job loss (OR = 4.074, p = 0.014) was a prominent risk factor, while among women, having two or more chi …

Operational definitions and measurement of externalizing behavior problems: An integrative review including research models and clinical diagnostic systems.

Measurement of externalizing disorders such as antisocial disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or borderline disorder have relevant implications for the daily lives of people with these disorders. While the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) have provided the diagnostic framework for decades, recent dimensional frameworks question the categorical approach of psychopathology, inherent in traditional nosotaxies. Tests and instruments develop under the DSM or ICD framework preferentially adopt this cate

Transdiagnostic skills training group of dialectical behavior therapy: a long-term naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has assembled a large body of evidence for the treatment of emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also in other disorders characterized by emotional dysregulation (e.g., bipolar disorder (BD) and ADHD). Standalone skills learning groups address the problem of limited resources in several clinical settings. Furthermore, transdiagnostic skills groups facilitate the recruitment and decrease the scattering of resources in psychiatric settings. However, few studies have focused on the pertinence of transdiagnostic stan…

Application of microarray patches for the transdermal administration of psychedelic drugs in micro-doses.

Throughout history, psychedelic compounds have been used for religious, spiritual and recreational purposes. A plethora of studies have reported the use of psychedelic compounds in the treatment of various conditions, such as alcoholism, addictions, depressive state to borderline schizophrenia, personality disorder, among other mental disorders. Psychedelic microdosing, a common technique in recent years, involves the consumption of small doses of psychedelic drugs for therapeutic purposes. This study investigated the potential of hydrogel-forming microarray patches (HF-MAPs) to deliver N,N-di

Emotion Regulation in Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Schema therapy (ST) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have both shown to be effective treatment methods especially for borderline personality disorder. Both, ST and DBT, have their roots in cognitive behavioral therapy and aim at helping patient to deal with emotional dysregulation. However, there are major differences in the terminology, explanatory models and techniques used in the both methods. This article gives an overview of the major therapeutic techniques used in ST and DBT with respect to emotion regulation and systematically puts them in the context of James Gross' process model…

Anger attacks in depression.

Anger, hostility and irritability are frequently observed among patients with unipolar depressive disorders. Approximately one-third of depressed outpatients present with "anger attacks," sudden spells of anger accompanied by symptoms of autonomic activation such as tachycardia, sweating, hot flashes, and tightness of the chest. Depressed patients with anger attacks are significantly more anxious and hostile and they are more likely to meet criteria for avoidant, dependent, borderline, narcissistic, and antisocial personality disorders than depressed patients without anger attacks. Idiopathic autonomic denervation in eight patients presenting with functional gastrointestinal disease. A causal association?

Gut dysmotility may result from disease of the extrinsic neural pathways supplying the gut. We report the results of studies on sweating, cardiovascular, and sudomotor reflexes in eight prospectively evaluated patients with apparently functional gastrointestinal disorders. There was no personal or family history of neurologic disease, except for one patient with known atony of the bladder. Motility of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine were, respectively, abnormal in two, six, and seven patients and showed either uncoordination of contractions between segments or postcibal hypomotilit

The effect of anxiety disorder comorbidity on treatment resistant bipolar disorders.

High rates of anxiety disorders have been reported in bipolar disorders. We undertook this study to determine the impact of anxiety disorders on bipolar disorders in our tertiary care referral center. We reviewed the literature on this topic and also reviewed records of 44 treatment resistant bipolar patients evaluated by DLD at the Center for Anxiety and Depression. Twenty-three patients had comorbid panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. We compared bipolar patients with and without a history of comorbid anxiety disorders regarding several clinical f
