Internal exposure of Flemish teenagers to environmental pollutants: Results of the Flemish Environment and Health Study 2016-2020 (FLEHS IV).

The Flemish Environment and Health Study (FLEHS) collects information on internal exposure to a broad range of environmental chemicals in the general population in Flanders, the Northern region of Belgium. The aim is to establish biomonitoring exposure distributions for the general population in support of public health and environmental policy, environmental risk assessment and risk management decisions. In 2017-2018, urine and blood samples were collected from 428 teenagers by a stratified clustered two stage randomized design. Samples were analyzed for a broad range of biomarkers related to

[THE LEVEL OF VIOLENCE IN CLOSED PSYCHIATRIC WARDS IN RELATION TO THE LEGAL STATUS OF THE INPATIENTS.].

BACKGROUND: One of the most serious problems in closed psychiatric wards is the issue of violence. Many studies have tried to characterize the violent patients hospitalized in a closed ward. Some research has shown that the strongest predictor of violence is past violence. The closed wards in the country consist of civil patients and patients hospitalized according to a court order following a history of violence, side by side. In this article, we characterized cases of violence that took place in closed wards in 2015, and in addition we examined the effect of hospitalization status on patient

Prevalence estimates of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Belgium: results from two cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is the most diagnosed sexually transmitted infection in Belgium. Screening programs focus on young women, due to the implications of chronic asymptomatic infections for reproductive health. Thereby, the frequency of infections in men and older adults is underestimated. This study aimed to estimate the point-prevalence of chlamydia in the broader Belgian population, to inform evidence-based prevention and control strategies. METHODS: We conducted two cross-sectional prevalence studies of chlamydia infection in the population of Belgium aged 16-59 y

Acute lymphoid and myeloid leukemia in a Brazilian Amazon population: Epidemiology and predictors of comorbidity and deaths.

INTRODUCTION: Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and has the highest rates of incidence in industrialized countries, followed by developing countries. This epidemiologic profile can mainly be attributed to the availability of diagnostic resources. In Brazil, leukemia diagnosis is a challenge due to financial viability, lack of hemovigilance services in isolated regions and the vast size of the territory. Its incidence in the state of Amazonas has been increasing since 2010. Therefore, this study aims to describe the epidemiological pattern and spatial distribution of patients with

Total hip arthroplasty versus hemiarthroplasty for independently mobile older adults with intracapsular hip fractures.

BACKGROUND: Displaced intracapsular hip fractures are typically treated with hemiarthroplasty (HA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). A number of professional bodies recommend considering THA for patients that were independently mobile and cognitively intact before injury. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes between HA and THA for independently mobile older adults with hip fractures. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs was undertaken alongside analysis of a propensity score matched national cohort of older adults (aged > 60) with hip fractures. Participants were

Prevalence of rearrangements in the 22q11.2 region and population-based risk of neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders in a Danish population: a case-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although the pathogenic nature of copy number variants (CNVs) on chromosome 22q11.2 has been recognised for decades, unbiased estimates of their population prevalence, mortality, disease risks, and diagnostic trajectories are absent. We aimed to provide the true population prevalence of 22q11.2 CNVs and associated trajectory of disease risk and mortality by use of the unbiased, representative Danish iPSYCH population case cohort. METHODS: This case-cohort study was done on a population of 86 189 individuals selected from the iPSYCH case cohort of 1 472 762 singletons born in Denma

Depression with atypical features and increase in obesity, body mass index, waist circumference, and fat mass: a prospective, population-based study.

IMPORTANCE: Depression and obesity are 2 prevalent disorders that have been repeatedly shown to be associated. However, the mechanisms and temporal sequence underlying this association are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD; melancholic, atypical, combined, or unspecified) are predictive of adiposity in terms of the incidence of obesity and changes in body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared), waist circumference, and fat mass. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective popul

Incidence and outcome of pulmonary embolism following popliteal venous repair in trauma cases.

OBJECTIVES AND DESIGN: Popliteal vein repair and ligation are the two main approaches to the treatment of the venous component of major, complex, knee injuries with vascular involvement. We have studied the incidence of pulmonary embolism following popliteal vein repair in trauma cases using computed tomography (CT) angiography and report the outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From June 2006 to December 2009, 45 patients with popliteal vein injury were operated on in our vascular unit using lateral venorrhaphy, end-to-end anastomosis, a saphenous vein interposition graft and venous patch repair.

Sociocultural, environmental, and health challenges facing women and children living near the borders between Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan (AIP region).

BACKGROUND: For hundred of years, people in the region encompassed by the Afghanistan-Iran-Pakistan borders (AIP region) have been challenged by conflict and political and civil instability, mass displacement, human rights abuses, drought, and famine. It not surprising that health and quality of life of vulnerable groups in this region are among the worst in the world. In general, women and children, in particular girls, in the AIP region have had especially limited access to healthcare. Women and children have dramatically high rates of communicable and non-communicable disease, morbidity, an

Red blood cells from patients with homozygous sickle cell disease provide a catalytic surface for factor Va inactivation by activated protein C.

Laryngotracheal stenosis is a recalcitrant disease with high morbidity. Laryngotracheal stenosis can be defined as a partial or circumferential narrowing of the airway and may be congenital or acquired. Sites involved are supraglottis, glottis, or sub glottis. The goal of treating the patient with laryngotracheal stenosis is to reconstruct an adequate airway while preserving phonation and airway protection. Furthermore, there is no fixed treatment for laryngotracheal stenosis, the choice of surgical procedure is determined by the individual anatomy, involved site, length and luminal narrowing

Twenty-four-hour autonomic nervous function in sustained and "white coat" hypertension.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether "white coat" hypertension, also known as isolated clinic hypertension, shares similarities in pathophysiologic background with sustained hypertension. Therefore we evaluated 24-hour autonomic nervous function in sustained and white coat hypertension. METHODS: We selected 12 patients with sustained hypertension (clinic blood pressure >/=140/90 mm Hg and daytime blood pressure >135/85 mm Hg) and 12 patients with white coat hypertension (clinic blood pressure >/=140/90 mm Hg and daytime blood pressure <135/85 mm Hg) from patients undergoing ambulatory blood pres

Trauma and humanitarian translation in Liberia: the tale of open mole.

The focus of this paper is the intercultural process through which Open Mole and trauma-related mental illnesses are brought together in the postconflict mental health encounter. In this paper, I explore the historical dimension of this process by reviewing the history of Open Mole, and the ways in which it has been interpreted, acted on, and objectified by external observers over the last half-century. Moving into Liberia's recent war and postconflict period, I examine the process by which Open Mole is transformed from a culture-bound disorder into a local idiom of trauma, and how it has beco

Private Acts, Social Consequences by Ronald Bayer (New York: Free Press; 1989).

Bayer's approach is most effective when he uses it to describe the politicized nature of AIDS policy in the United States. He succeeds in showing the reader that public health authorities dealing with the spread of HIV/AIDS had a wide variety of competing interests to take into account in formulating AIDS social policy and that political interest groups, most notably gay community organizations, played a large role in fashioning AIDS policy. Those who might have doubted the significance of contextual factors such as these for health policy, and especially for AIDS policy, will be convinced of

Private capital in a public field: a qualitative study of philanthropic influence in Germany's global health governance.

BACKGROUND: International philanthropic foundations have become prominent actors in global health, influencing funding priorities, institutional partnerships, and governance practices at a scale that increasingly rivals many state actors. While their role in multilateral organisations and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has been widely debated, less is known about how these actors operate within high-income donor countries themselves. Over the past two decades, Germany has emerged as a key contributor to global health initiatives and has developed close working relationships with inte

Multivariable analysis of health-related quality of life determinants among medical students at a Single Syrian University in a conflict-affected setting: a cross-sectional study using the Arabic SF-36.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among medical students is particularly vulnerable to academic stressors, especially in populations exposed to armed conflict. This study evaluated the internal consistency and construct validity of the Arabic version of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) in a cohort of medical students at a single university in Syria and examined determinants of HRQoL during the Syrian civil war. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 181 of 300 medical students (60.3%) from the Faculty of Medicine at Aleppo University who attended co
