OBJECTIVES: To describe the demographic, clinical and management aspects of an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) within a paediatric Pacific Island community in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2002-2003.
METHODS: The index and source case are described along with details of the extensive contact tracing that was undertaken in this community.
RESULTS: A total of 24 children were diagnosed with TB over an 11-month period. All cases were found to be epidemiologically linked to the one source case, mother of the index case. This total included 22 children with pulmonary disease, 1 case of miliary disease

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell neoplasm with a relatively aggressive clinical course. There is a very small subgroup of patients who present with atypical lymphocytes in peripheral blood, with or without lymphocytosis, lymphadenopathy, or splenomegaly, and with an indolent clinical course. Our review of the current use of the carbon dioxide laser in treating vulvar disease reveals that it holds significant promise in the treatment of vulvar intraepithelial carcinoma, condylomata acuminata, and focal vestibular adenitis. The long-range results of such treatment, however, are not yet known. Until sufficient data are accumulated to demonstrate the efficacy of the laser in treating the vulvar dystrophies and herpes genitalis, it should be used with caution, and the results should be carefully evaluated and reported.

Most serious hand infections are preventable at this time if proper prophylaxis is maintained with regard to the hands and if the precursor conditions-mild inflammations and infections-are quickly and appropriately treated. In those few serious hand infections that still occur, a judicious combination of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative measures should preserve normal or at least reasonable function in practically all instances.

A 52 yr old Caucasian female (F. E.) had hemolytic anemia, a leukemoid reaction, and fatal sepsis due to Escherichia coli.
